It's the never the management is it
actually a lot of the layoffs happening at MS and across the tech industry has been middle management.

anyway announcements of "record profits" + layoffs are a cornerstone of late stage capitalism. numbies gotta go up more, easiest way is to cut costs. easiest way to cut costs is staff.

in 18 months they'll probably re-hire half the positions they are letting go

Perfect Dark cancelled?

Windows Central is currently investigating reports that Perfect Dark and ZeniMax Online Studios' new online IP have also been cancelled. We are awaiting hard confirmation, as Microsoft continues to let staffers know where the cuts are falling. ZeniMax Online Studios' new IP hadn't been formally revealed, but Perfect Dark has had multiple trailers since its announcement. The studio, The Initiative, has been working on the game for many years in partnership with Embracer Groups' Crystal Dynamics of Tomb Raider fame.

With H-1B's. That's how Microsoft works. Fire 5000 people. Replace them with 7500 H-1B hires.

Wow. Everwild and now rumors about Perfect Dark, Zenimax Online's new IP, and Kojima's OD as well. Could be 4 games cancelled. I bet Sony cancels FAIRGAME$ tomorrow since they like to hide their bad PR behind Xbox stuff like today.
Kojima's OD as well? Wow.

Cool though. Meaning he will be able to start Death Stranding 3 sooner!

What a mess all of this is.

This is a business division that's seemingly obsessed and addicted with using shills to try and control online messaging/discourse, but yet they have no idea how to announce things in a way that doesn't leave things open for rumours to start flying around.
I said it before, it's management by vibes.

They let this thing stew for over a week with no clarification or anything! That's how I knew in my bones that they're doing something really big today.

I hope people will finally understand why a lot of gamers don't want Microsoft to buy beloved publishers and studios. It's not fear mongering or console warring.

I thought Perfect Dark looked really good. Would definitely be another disappointment if its not nearly complete after all this time. The Initiative and Everwild are pretty much their biggest disasters.

Wonder how Colt, Jez, and Destin will spin this as a positive for Xbox.

Edit: fanboy is really fighting hard

Just like certain people here are spinning it already:

"He's saying that their current metrics are due to previously difficult decisions (like going multiplatform), so they have to make those kinds of calls to position their gaming division correctly to have any continued success."

It is for Xbox's continued success.

What makes it even more hilarious is that the press knew it was going to be today ahead of time, and even with that nothing is clear and new rumours are flying around.

Management by vibes is the only thing that would explain this mess.

Yeah, it was felt in the air. I hope the PD one stuff aint true.

Vastly different industry, but I was told once "well are amazed at how much you manage to do and we would not be able to function as well as we do without you."

A week later I was walked out the door and told I no longer had a job. I hate every single executive there is. They are ALL scum.
Yea that would've sent my BS antenna's sky high.

Edit: also why I have trust issues lol.

"CoPilot, I need to fire 9,000 people. How do I do that, who do I fire and come up with a plan for me" - Phil, probably.

Its extremely difficult to build a new studio. Proven by Concord, Fairgames, the Initiative and many more. This is why Xbox had to buy studios to even try to compete this gen. No clue what you're talking about honestly. Lots of great stuff out there that exceeds my expectations.

Likely a staged demo with no real gameplay.

Gaming industry is so insane. Imagine working on a singular project for the better part of a decade. Showing up to work everyday. Doing overtime. Just plugging away at one single aspect of a huge project. Then one day the company that made 44B in profit last year is like "hey fuck all that shit. Youre fired. But the meaningless work you've done for the last few years has set us up great! Never looked better!"

I feel like this would trigger a deep existential crisis in me and make me question everything in life.

What's mental is that

- in June 2020 MS had around 163k employees

- by December 2024 that was up to 228k employees.

-Since December to now it went up to around 237k.

-And now they are letting go of 9k.

In short, the tech industry is a dynamic where both a lot of hiring is done, and a lot of sudden dismissal is also happening. The latter, of course, is more shocking and draws more attention due to its human drama nature and immediacy.
By acquisition, then cutting. Let's call it what it is.

I survived a big layoff once and was in the company meeting afterwards to talk about the future vision and then I got tapped on the shoulder and followed my boss out to his office. They forgot to fire me . . .

Its something I have mentioned a few times here over the years is I have heard Phil talk about games years ago that have heard nothing about since but this wasn't even one of those

Must be crazy to have a manager that doesn't check on what you're doing for years and is then happy when you last minute whip up Craig for a trailer due the next day.
