Microsoft is eventually going to rule gaming

Microsoft has a loooooooong way to go with regards to the way they're doing PC gaming. I very much appreciate their commitment to porting over every first party title to the PC, but in terms of their storefront and how they deliver updates and their digital distribution solution, they're still so far behind Steam, GOG Galaxy, even Origin before I can consider them a serious contender in the PC space. (and their first few games that support Play Anywhere have had really janky PC ports).

Yea I don't think so dude. Microsoft has never been as uninteresting in gaming as they are now imo. I little reason to buy an Xbone and the game store in Windows 10 is horrendously awful compared to Steam.

A surprisingly bright spot I see in Microsoft is there Surface brand, it just screams digital productivity. The hardware is pretty damn good especially since Apple seems to be snoring right now besides their iPhone. All Microsoft needs to do is make Windows 10 a fuckton less intrusive now.

With Windows.

Their living room gaming hardware - it's totally separate from MS, a different division! Not a PC. It's got a totally different OS and interface.

But then down the line, MS bridges the gap and combines the two.

Windows 10 on your Xbox One 0

A PC undercover as a games console, with replaceable parts, a fully couch/handheld friendly Xbox interfaced part of Windows.Which communicates with all your devices, and can even stream to them. With everything you'd expect from a PC. All in one, slowly introducing a PC to the living room through video games.

Who can compete with that?

Is this a troll thread? Just consider what your posting.

I remember when that was on the verge of happening...20 years ago.

Why do people insist that everything is on track to be taken over by one element? What pleasure comes from this fantasy?

By the same logic MS should have dominated the phone space and we saw how that worked out.

"But Windows" isnt a magic bullet.

Who wants a phone without a keyboard?

Consoles are (cost) efficient because they are closed boxes. The cons of a modular console heavily outweighs the pro.

Very true.

You've basically described the entire Xbox master plan since day one. Hasn't worked yet.

They jumped into the game because they were afraid of Sony taking over the living room right?

The notion that slowly introducing a PC to a living room is some kind of huge game changer is something I'm finding really funny.

I find it funny too, but the realisation that this is probably still their goal sends shivers down my spine. The fact some people actually support this turns those shivers to dread.

Nice joke. PC is a relatively small portion of the gaming market.

And a huge chunk of the PC gaming money comes from F2P and web stuff, so there are no changes for MS to get money from that. And in the paid games Steam owns a huge market share (almost a monopoly) and won't lose this.

If they turn their Xbox division into a 3rd party hardware SteamMachine-like brand would be just to continue their trend of slowly leaving consoles without making too much noise. They won't make a big deal out of this.

My money on the next big player is Amazon.

They're rapidly expanding (or acquiring) very solid tools and services in gaming:

  • AWS is still huge for game servers.
  • Twitch is still the #1 streaming platform.
  • Lumberyard could be a great game engine.
  • Amazon obviously has digital distribution power.
  • They've acquired or invested in several studios.
  • And Amazon has plenty of capital to keep investing.

Microsoft is the jack of all trades, master of none.

Credit where it's due. The surface studio is pretty sweet. They definitely schooled Apple there and are arguably out-innovating them there. Their concept of having a single OS kernel running the gamut of device form factors is great and I can see it going places. But they are not touching my games and I'm spending zero of my gaming dollars on their consoles.

God, I would really love to see Sega back in the game.

Why did Amazon call their engine Lumberyard? Amazon. Lumberyard. Did anyone at Amazon think that was maybe a bad idea?
