Microsoft is increasing the prices of Xbox Series consoles in the US... again.

I believe this is 100% total fabrication on Microsoft's Part. Think about this. If they Srop the price of the consoles like oh lets say every console since last gen backward has done for years upon years, Than how are they going to justify asking you for 799.99-899.99 for their next box? They are getting everyone used to this is what it cost. No one is buying XBOX now at their updated costs so what adding 30-50 on to that.

When they release the Next system next year they can say its only 200.00 more than current and look at the difference.

Im probably completely wrong, but I bet this plays a part.

And way back you'd get consoles dumped down $100, and last gen google says ps4 was down to $200 on a hot deal.

Now, prices are going up! Lol.

But good for early adopters looking to sell. During COVID and people amped up buying consoles I sold my One X with a second game pad and some cruddy GP kinds of games for $450! Lol…. Ya it includes all these games man. Fallout 4, Mass Effect 3….

I love how idiot video game media speak about how consoles are selling less this generation and NOT make the price of them the one and ONLY point! $200 PS4 at this point vs a $650 Xbox Series X!!!!!

Microsoft is sick and tired of losing money. We're way past the time of the living room war. Losing money makes absolutely no sense anymore. Either start making money or leave the market.

Microsoft is such a software powerhouse. Xbox is better off joing that.

Are you sure about this? If anything I think the hardware division has been consistently better at delivering than XGS at least. Say what you want about Nintendo but their lower end hardware is complemented by exclusive access to some of the strongest IP in gaming.

"Sir nobody is buying our consoles. We're quickly becoming the laughing stock of the industry."
"Excellent, increase prices on all Xbox Series consoles"
"W... what?"
"Fuck it, blame Trump. Tarifs. Macroeconomics. Whatever."

What is this strategy called?
Perhaps a visual summation?

They are a multiplatform software publisher now, hardware for them is just an optional gaming hardware line with a Xbox logo. People can also play their games on PC, Playstation, Switch.
It doesn't make sense to lose money on a specific hardware if your business model doesn't revolve around creating a big installed base of that specific hardware to sell your software on.
It's time people stop being shocked at the obvious consequences of previous business choices.

Yup.

I remember making that point too maybe a month or two ago in some thread. PS5 sales at around double the price of a PS4 by now still within reaching distance of PS4 sales trends should be an accomplishment on itself.

If PS5 was around $300 by now, it'd probably be at 100M already.

Or they can say look it's the same price. Sony will be thinking similarly with their increases only difference is ps5 currently sells even at that price.

I also think Xbox probably don't produce many if any new Xboxs so they'll estimate they can sell their current inventory over the next 2 years even at the higher price.

I don't want to check the numbers right now but you want to bet Sony's and Microsoft's software revenue(which includes their store) is multiple times what they make on hardware?
Sega almost went bankrupt because the were losing like 50 bucks per each dreamcast and never had any moment to breathe and see it break even, they needed major software sales just to pay it off. Microsoft lost billions with the OG Xbox because they were losing more than 100 bucks per unit and had the worst deals with the CPU and GPU makers. The PS2 for the first two years actually incurred major losses.

So even with their revenue, they won't allow themselves to be countered with hardware losses, especially when the chipmakers aren't giving price cuts as they used to.

MS trying to prepare our anguses for the price of their console that will have competing services on it. $1300. But by the time it comes out the XSX will be $999 so it won't seem so crazy.

That, or those 110 million Game Pass users are not going to convert themselves. Spend $1k+ or stream? The choice is yours. I really do think it is just a move to not lose money on each console sold. The question is, will prices come down if tariffs do?

Don't worry homie, chorizo has your back:
I understand, but when i say "financially forced" im also talking about what you are referencing (the consultancy groups) and the internal woke/DEI ideology within these studios.

This practice is meant to bring in new and diverse demographics (more revenue/profitsor so they say), which in turn makes studios bloated and production more expensive and time-consuming. Now, for whatever the fuck reason, you need a narrative team three times the size just to produce a worse, lamer story and uninspired, boring, by-the-books game design and gameplay, all to appeal to the biggest audience. The obfuscation of the myth of the modern audience/the cult aspect of this corporate ideology is kind of pushing these companies to compensate (by reaching) for the nonexistent modern audience everywhere.

without this ideology sony could save like 30-50M in budget easy.

I'd be interested to see a cost breakdown and the increase to each part
The BOM "virtual" impact is just the pro rata basis of the finished product tariff. As the tariff is only applied to the shipped product there is no tariff on individual components per se.

For all you US citizens the tariffs are a tax paid at customs by the importer. Typically this is then passed through to the consumer of those imported products. Typically but not necessarily in full or at all if the importer wants to eat the tariff cost. (or boost margins globally to offset). THEY ARE NOT PAID BY ANOTHER COUNTRY!! I feel like your education system is letting you down, so many don't understand the basics of tariffs. Well you are also being lied to daily, but whats new.

ChatGPT response. I did some basic checking and had to feed it the latest tariff details. It pulled all the BOM cost assumptions which I haven't checked. It makes assumptions as to declared cost at customs.

Tariff Breakdown (HTS 9504.50.00.00 – Video Game Consoles). Accurate as per today.

Line Item Rate Duty on $10,000 Shipment
------------------------------------------------------------
9504.50.00.00 Base Duty Free $0
9903.01.24 IEEPA China 20% $2,000
9903.01.25 IEEPA Reciprocal 10% $1,000
------------------------------------------------------------
Total Effective Tariff: 30% $3,000

Xbox Series X – BOM vs 30% Tariff Impact

Component Base Cost Tariff (30%) Effective Cost

They forgot to put apple logo on them. Then they'd fly off the shelves at new price
Interestingly enough Apple didn't really increase prices on iPhones, watches and headphones this year. If anything, base iPhone 17 got a lot of upgrades moving it a lot closer to the "Pro".
