Microsoft is increasing the prices of Xbox Series consoles in the US... again.

Oh shit, when did GHG GHG had this avatar? Didn't even realize. He been MIA, i thought trump got him or something.

Microsoft doesn't care about its own consoles anymore and instead of taking some steps to fight the tariffs they'll just set insane prices in the US (and raise them if needed) and slowly sell the current stock in other part of the world.

It will be the same if they'll follow with the plan to release another traditional console. I won't be surprised if it's close to 1000$ and becomes extremely niche hardware, even more than the Xbox Ally.

It will likely be above $1000 if it does support Steam and Epic.

Sony total price increases since launch:
PS5: 10%
PS5 DE: 25%
PS5 Pro: 7%

Microsoft total price increases since launch:
Series S: 33%
Series S 1TB: 29%
Series X: 30%
Series X 2TB: 33%
Sony absorbed more of the cost than MS in the retail price?
I guess it makes sense since they sell more and get the money back faster.

Well we're back again to Series X being $100 more than the PS5!

$650 for a Series X is wild.

2 seperate price increases in a 4 month span. Totalling a 30% increase in cost.

Just discontinue it lol.

They are also producing ps5s in other countries to reduce impact of tariffs and the series x atleast seems like a more expensive device to manufacture. So probably aren't taking a hit like ms is.

Why MS mind increased the price 1 time and by done with it? They should have increase the prices 30% and done.

I always wonder what is the cost of unsold inventory as prices increase. For PlayStation 5 it seems to not be a concern but for less demanded products I would think it would be a liability.

It's not the same but I will say it anyway, it was about 2004 when our CEO saw some scanning software in a convention and brought the idea of making a new scanning software but sell it for a fraction (250 bucks instead of 1500 or something like that). We built it, we released it, and literally sold a few hundred copies only. So he considered what happened and raised the price to $999 because "it was too cheap and wasn't taken as seriously". Man, CEOs have some odd takes.
Believe it or not, this actually works for the right product.

A key example here is what Luxottica did when they took over Ray-Ban:

Why not just cancel the 2TB version. $150 more just to get an extra TB of storage?
Remember that MS has that dumb proprietary storage. So 1 TB is like $150 retail anyways for it.

If someone wants to have a lot of crap installed and has to have an Xbox, 2TB makes some sense.

It shouldn't be $150 more though since a 3rd party retail MSRP for 1TB externally packaged drive is that.

Yeah, it is $50 to go from 512GB to 1 TB with XSS so it should be $100 more, at most, for XSX to go from 1 TB to 2 TB. But I guess if they priced it correctly then it would further highlight what a shit deal the proprietary expansion really is.

Why doesn't Microsoft( and I guess the other companies) make representation that these consoles could fall under whatever category smartphones are which AFAIK have some kind of exemption? They all have GPUS, CPUs, RAM and other bits and bobs. If its about the end-use, there's nothing mandating that someone has to use an iPhone specifically as a phone. Dare I suggest its phone capabilities are probably secondary functions for many people now? Fuck, I haven't actually taken a 'phone call' in months; most people I speak to now either do so via voice-chat or video chat, and most of my 'phone' usage is using it as a web browser, playing the odd phone game, YouTube, watching movies etc.

These devices are all essentially multi-function media devices now. What is it specifically about gaming 'consoles' that subject them to these tariffs in a say that, for example, the new iphones or other exempt electronics don't? The PS5 and Series go beyond the function of just being 'gaming devices', and have done so since the 7th gen.

Sorry, early morning rant and I could be completely off-base.

The difference is the only reason why walled gardens are allowed. If you become a multimedia device then you are in risk of having other company's stores open on your device against your will. No walled garden = no console, basically.

I thought a multimedia device was literally defined by its name, the ability to serve as a means to use multiple forms of media. You're saying it's moreso whether the device has its own walled garden or is open to other storefronts beyond its remit? So what's the reason for something like the iphone having an exemption but not the PS5 or Xbox consoles? They're all walled garden devices or am I completely misunderstanding you?

Kinda agree with you, but isn't 1TB of that proprietary external storage more than $150?

(honestly have no idea, it was ridiculously expensive not so long time ago)

1 TB proprietary is $160. But with that we are talking about an separately sold product vs simply upgrading storage components on the motherboard. 2TB XSX is nothing but a blatant cash grab.

The Seagate expansion card was outrageously priced when it came out, but ( unsurprisingly) when WD brought out theirs the prices came down bit. Funny how competition works lol....still the PS5 had the better solution for your wallet going with non-proprietary storage.

And way back you'd get consoles dumped down $100, and last gen google says ps4 was down to $200 on a hot deal.

Now, prices are going up! Lol.

But good for early adopters looking to sell. During COVID and people amped up buying consoles I sold my One X with a second game pad and some cruddy GP kinds of games for $450! Lol…. Ya it includes all these games man. Fallout 4, Mass Effect 3….
Not sure what point you're trying to make. The PS4 was RARELY $200, meanwhile the xbox one was consistently $200 throughout the year.

I think it's to cover up the failure.

Look, what failed was the entire strategy Phil Spencer created when he took over Xbox.

But if Phil Spencer admits the error in the entire strategy, unlike Redfall, there's no way to talk about an "accident" or "it was just a mistake"; he would have destroyed Xbox.

The goal is for Xbox to stop selling in a way that allows him, Phil Spencer, to talk about "external conditions," "market conditions," "It was Matrick who lost the last generation."

I knew Microsoft would do this. They always try to blame something or someone when their vision or strategy destroys the business.

Windows Phone didn't end because MS fragmented a platform to cram in PC, Xbox, and Windows Phone integration (something no one even cares about or wants today) with 3% market share. It was because Google didn't make YouTube for Windows Phone. It's never the fault of MS's stupid strategy... It's always someone else's fault.

The Xbox 2TB is meant to "increase the failure" and further demonstrate that "the market no longer wants consoles."

"Look how hard we tried, even with an extra premium version; still, no one wanted it."

Yes this has been my thought process. They just want a presence in the market but dont really care about how well it does. They are just gunning for the whales and anyone else can just leave and buy their games on whatever system they want.

they keep fighting a losing fight, rumors of PS6 having a simpler desing to keep costs down is exactly what this industry and ecosystem needs.

I hate these two fat cunts. They have their tongues so far up Microsoft's ass I don't know how anybody takes them seriously.

Say what you will about Ryan McCaffrey being a shill (he is, but he is still knowledgeable about the industry and isn't afraid to criticize when needed) but these two just shovel whatever Microsoft wants down their throats. I'll never understand why Colin lets this twat as on his podcast from time to time.
