Microsoft is providing new power cords at no charge

:lol

The title of this thread is one of the finest pieces of spin I've seen in this forum in quite a while. Nice.

anyone have any idea how long it takes to ship these things? We might be moving in a few weeks, so I don't want to have it coming to this house if I'm not living here anymore.

I just ordered one. Plan on getting another one out of them - we've got two XBoxen in the house, and I'm damned if I know which cable came with which XBox.

I just got this e-mail.

Its cheaper than facing the suits of people claiming faulty xboxen burned down their house.
(I assume that's how a recall works, eh?)

It removes the liability.. and don't forget that people are mostly too lazy to even put their serial number into the box. So the actual cost isn't that much.

^^^yep thats it got it yesterday. Its a very nice cord with a built in Circuit breaker that shuts off the Xbox if it detects any electrical problems and reset button etc... Doesnt look cheap!

Well I'm glad I don't need a replacement cord. Too friggin big...I'd have to plug the Xbox to a different outlet since it wouldn't fit with all the other plugs

Not everyone will receive the cord shown above. It varies by Xbox model. For example, my replacement cord is physically the same as my old cord but it's an updated version of it.

Mine came really quick. I went up to the website the day it was announced, ordered 2 for my Xboxes, and they both came on Tuesday(around 6 days to get them).

I'm sure Microsoft doesn't their ass being sued when someone's house burns down because of an Xbox...go speed delivery! :)

Hmm, odd... I dont see a serial number on mine. There's only a barcode in that area. Anyone know of an additional place to find your S/N? Can you do it when you turn on your machine?

Mine got here very quickly last week. And as can be seen in those pics, it is nice to see they are taking things serious by providing a nicely reengineered piece.

Hah, when did the XBox turn into a hair dryer? Seems kind of like overkill, but I guess it's good that Microsoft is really going out of their way to cover their giant pale-white asses. I haven't even bothered to see if my XBox applies for a replacement, mainly because I really don't feel like digging its cable out from the precariously hidden rats nest of other cables behind my entertainment area and because that plug looks to big to plug into an outlet without interfering with the other ones.

You could just quickly pop the power cord out of the back of the Xbox itself to check for the S/N beneath...

I may have it just to have an extra free cable. Then when my existing one causes my house to burn down, I can grasp the new one in my arms while standing in front of my burning rubble screaming WHYYYYYYY??11!2

Has it been discussed that infact it's not the actual cord but the PSU that are malfunctioning and that the new cord is just a fail safe of a sort? Apparently the PSU solderings are a bit shoddy in the older models and can malfunction, causing sparks/melting/fire or just harm the user, the new cord only flips a switch when it senses this and shuts down the Xbox, but the Xbox would apparently die either way. :P

I just called XBox support, I don't get one of those fancy cords. My original XBox died, and I have two replacements (manufasctured after Jun 2003) I think. So they did need the big block power cord. My Halo XBox didn't even qualify for a replacement. But I was sent two of the old replacements anyway. So this must be for older launch XBoxes. So I guess my home was never in danger of being burned to a cinder. :lol

i should probably get one, but that thing wont fit in my socket (they are only like an inch from the ground)

With the new cable only the PSU would die, if even that. It was that, or a full recall of all the Xbox concerned I guess. Considering the vast majority won't never have a problem, it must have been the least expansive choice for MS.
One thing I do not understand is why they are also providing standard power cords for Xbox who AFAIK do not need it.

Not unless you got one of these :D

I got three of these in my mailbox yesterday, not sure if it's because I'm in a PAL territory or what, but I'm in Australia, and these are what I got.

Eh.. these cords come in handy all over the place, this frees up my original one for use as a spare elsewhere.

Just ordered mine yesterday. I've already got a power regulator built into my surge protector but I figured it can't hurt to get something for free! :)

:lol I got a letter this morning from Robbie Bach telling me to replace my power cord, did anyone else get one? I guess they used my Xbox live info to get my address.

Same here. Addressed to 'Fander' instead of Sander, although my registration & Live info etc is correct

I got my replacement cord two weeks ago. Too bad all I got was a normal cord, nothing fancy with test buttons like some of you guys got. :(
