Microsoft: Next Xbox will work even when your Internet doesn’t

Remember when the Xbox 360 wouldn't match the PS3 in multiplats because the PS3 was too powerful?

Really people said that? Seems like a chance for déjà vu.

A consoles potential is down to the devs, it could have all the ram in the world but if its not utilised it doesn't matter.

Yep, rumours are rumours and should always be treated as such.

But let's not forget the whole Orthy fiasco. I think that's when MS decided to take a step back.

I'm glad to see Microsoft changing it's tune.

If this is true, I no longer need to boycott the 720. Well unless it blocks me from using my games on multiple consoles. Living room, bedroom, summer house, winter house, etc.

The email sender can decide if specific email can't be copy-pasted,forwarded, printed in Outlook, pretty basic stuff.

Not to burst your bubble but shouldn't a Microsoft rep know how to snip and use printscreen. :-P

To be fair, blame that on Nvidia. If the RSX was as powerful as Nvidia led on, people had every reason to believe that.

I know. Nvidia creating that just made everything worse.

It's weird to me that Ars is even involved. I've always put them in a class way way above the gaming "journalists". Didn't think they did much reporting on gaming.

They don't, but this is new technology, so naturally they have been posting stuff related to both consoles. The reason I'm inclined to believe this is that they have yet to start a rumor that has turned out to be false in any context as far as I know.

Maybe people will be better off waiting for the 21st.

If only people took this approach from jump street. Instead people said fuck Microsoft, declared ps4 their console of choice, talked about how bad the whole Adam Orth debacle would hurt Microsoft because it got articles on major news sites. All off rumors. Absolutely ridiculous.

Copy/Paste, memory?

Ars also "quoted" it. So... yea. How'd Ars get it then? Contradict yourself.

The original content can be re-typed,re-phrased ,of course.

But you don't need to to photocopy this mail to convince them , if Ars knows you very well and confirmed you identity.

Remember when the Xbox 360 wouldn't match the PS3 in multiplats because the PS3 was too powerful?

Oh I remember that one, it didn't only match the PS3 in multiplats but it had the better versions of said multiplats most of the time (performance wise).
So you think history is repeating itself? you think this is going to be the case again?

Rumors said it was, and this rumor says it won't totally have it (but will), both rumors. You?

So you basically believe that even though there are rumors that say it doesn't, and there are rumors that say it does, you think it will?

I personally don't know for sure, and I can't really say until the 21st I guess. I'm inclined to believe that it won't because

1. It doesn't make any fucking sense, and it would be really stupid.
2. Other rumors have suggested it won't. In fact, many more rumors now suggest it won't.
3. ARS TECHNICA claims to have an e-mail suggesting it won't.

What are your reasons?

Any chance I could write a few lines and say I got them in an email too, to get page hits or stir up discussion?

This back and forth and uncertainty from all the different outlets in regards to what the next MS console will do is really worrying. 21st cant get here soon enough.

I think the next Xbox will probably surprise again.

I know. Nvidia creating that just made everything worse.

I love that GAF puts all the blame on NVIDIA and nothing in Sony. Sony allowed those specs to be published and never backtracked on them after they were published. Maybe they didn't know and NVIDIA lied to them.

new tagline for the PS4 should be the who's line
"we won't get fooled again"

Rumors said it was, and this rumor says it won't totally have it (but will), both rumors. You?

Actually several of the previous rumors have backtracked to say it won't (VGLeaks for example) and even those that did always made sure to play the "things could change" non-committal card.

Now there's an internal email from Microsoft that reads a lot like they maybe did plan for it but changed track along the way. You can't see the actual email, but it's posted by the 100% legit and reputable Ars Technica who you have no reason to doubt.

So in summary, you probably don't believe it will be always online, are aware you'll have to eat crow for it later, but can't help yourself from entering and shitting up every single thread on Durango. Am I right?

Ars Technica said:
According to an internal Microsoft e-mail sent to all full-time employees working on the next Xbox, "Durango [the codename for the next Xbox] is designed to deliver the future of entertainment while engineered to be tolerant of today's Internet." It continues, "There are a number of scenarios that our users expect to work without an Internet connection, and those should 'just work' regardless of their current connection status. Those include, but are not limited to: playing a Blu-ray disc, watching live TV, and yes playing a single player game."

The quotation also implicitly confirms another rumor: the next Xbox will sport an HDMI input, to allow cable boxes to be hooked up for live TV viewing. Our sources tell us that the console will be able to provide TV listings and similar information.

Directly quoting the e-mail. Post the whole thing.

Well Cerny is behind the PS4. I know he wouldn't throw his credibility (Which he has earned throughout his career) on the line for console war bullshit.

Sony/Euro gaf kills me.

MS bad news/rumor = embrace it like the 2nd coming!
MS good news = dismiss and put forth conspiracy theories up the ass

Remember when the Xbox 360 wouldn't match the PS3 in multiplats because the PS3 was too powerful?

that only hurt Sony and devs who got the early PS3 dev kits....the early kits had two SLI GPUs, nvidia was promising the PS3 GPU would be equivalent to those, but it wasn't

nvidia over promised, Sony believed them and at the end nvidia didn't deliver...

So is this true or a rumor?

The thread title leads me to believe it's true, but the actual article doesn't confirm authenticity at all.

If only people took this approach from jump street. Instead people said fuck Microsoft, declared ps4 their console of choice, talked about how bad the whole Adam Orth debacle would hurt Microsoft because it got articles on major news sites. All off rumors. Absolutely ridiculous.

Has there ever been a string of rumors like this "Always online" stuff though? I mean, Edge started the whole thing and then we had gaffers and other insiders confirm it, trustworthy people like Thurrott back it up, and the Adam Orth thing. Its not like some people just caught wind of some random rumor and decided to go with it.

If I had to take a stance on this now, Id say that MS definitely planned on going forward with "always online" but after all the internet outrage, they changed their stance and thats what prompted this memo. Otherwise, it doesnt make a lot of sense for MS to have to tell the people making Durango games that they dont have to be internet connected. You would think anyone making a Durango game would already know this.

It's entirely plausible that Microsoft is folding on certain parts of always online due to the Orth PR fallout. We'll never know for sure though, and that's a pity.

May 21st can't get here fast enough.

It also turned the Digital Foundry comment section during faceoffs into the cesspool we know today.

This gen coined "Lazy Devs".

true story. really wish I didn't rush out and buy the PS3 now. I'll never fall for that trick again. Never.

Alleged. So in summary, you're believing rumors, but discrediting others, as other users have.

It comes from two things

The system is always online. This doesn't mean it has to be online, just the system can use an Internet connection when it is in its low power state

The system REQUIRES an Internet connection. It, however, doesn't require a constant Internet connection.

You get illiterate people reading these things and boom! Stupid rumors ahoy!

Lol, you can't "backtrack" on an announcement like that, especially when you've just revealed it to the world. You just try and offer the best support you can to get the games looking better.

Well Cerny is behind the PS4. I know he wouldn't throw his credibility (Which he has earned throughout his career) on the line for console war bullshit.

I agree with you, but I also would have said the same thing about Ken Kutaragi who is an amazing hardware designer

lmao at anyone doubting ars technicas credibility.
this is as official as it gets. even vgleaks backtracked on the rumor. its always the same people shitting inside the xbox threads though its hilarious.

Nvidia are shit and no one in the console business should give them a second glance.
They've failed for MS/Sony and Nintendo.

Lets not even argue here; Nvidia have been problems whenever involved in consoles.

It also turned the Digital Foundry comment section during faceoffs into the cesspool we know today.

It hurt Kojima the most, the downgrade from TGS 2005 trailer to E3 2006 trailer was massive. Kojima had to abandon his vision for the game thnx to that downgrade. No wonder why Sony didn't work with nvidia on Vita or PS4.

I think they conned Microsoft too with the Xbox GPU.

i don't think VGleaks ever put forth the rumor of always online.
