Microsoft respond to the EDGE article

The specs really would not matter if the two consoles were priced the same but, they are not. Microsoft's problems are they did not go far enough with the multimedia box and they have not shown so far why the kinect is worth being packed in with the console. Sure it is nice that it integrates with live tv with hdmi passthrough but, it would have been better if the box was actually a cable box or iptv box and the customer would not have to have a separate box to take advantage of the live tv integration.

Why is kinect so important? what makes it so special that it has to be packed in with the xbox one thus raising the price of the system? Those are the questions Microsoft should be answering not questions about specs. When the Wii took off for Nintendo they had a tangible example of why the wiimote was special and why they were going the direction they were going. Microsoft continues to mess up on this key point and it may very well be the xbox one's downfall unless they release a later sku that does not have kinect packed in and cut the price.

I've already bought a PS4, I think the price difference is significant, and pretty much guarantees sony has this gen all locked up, but I definitely disagree that Microsoft hasn't shown me that Kinect is worth being bundled with the system. Sure, there's no killer app games that use it, and there may never be, but I like the thought of having it for the amazing integration that it has with the entire system. It isn't just about Skype and talking to change television channels. It's all the little things that it does, automatically signing me in, automatically setting proper button configurations for the right player, launching games and different things on the console instantly. I don't need to rehash it all, but I'm really excited to just own and use the new Kinect with my console.

If I didn't think it was worth it and an added value, I certainly wouldn't buy an xbox one for $500+. I'd just wait for the eventual price drop.

Microsoft should just lower the price of the XBone to $350 considering how weak it is.

Yea, weak enough to do ryse and forza 5 at launch.

But I'd say you're in the minority. To you, those features are worth the 100+ (since the Xbox 1 by itself is obviously not worth $399) MS is asking for but to me, saving me a second or two of pressing buttons isn't worth all the extra cash and obviously, I'm not the only one. MS needs to show how Kinect is worth it when it comes to gaming. It IS a gaming console after all.

Real next gen? C'mon WiiU haters, your "real" next gen is here and it isn't as shiny as what a nice PC rig can produce. XBone is a laughable misstep in policy and approach not hardware spec wise. Sony is gonna shellac MS this gen.

You missed the point where I said that cost was the issue and that the XB1 needed to be priced at $350. That would be $50 less than the PS4.

I was simply responding to the tendency to downplay everything MS has done for the XB1. The Kinect is a nice piece of hardware. Skype will be a selling point for some. Integration with live TV has to be put on the plus side if you are counting positives and negatives. Give MS the credit they are do. The system will do, yield issues aside, what they set out to do. If you looked at that XB1 without looking at the price, you'd have to say it was a nice product. It is the price that is tripping it up.

Here is the interesting thing though. Sony has kind of tip there hand on the marketing angle they are going with toward launch at Gamescon, their press event in Japan on Monday, and Jack Tretton's interview on Fox New. For the next 2 months they plan to let the world know that "PS4 is the most powerful games console". So therefore MS, going the have to convince folks that all those extra features they like to talk about are worth a $100 more than a graphically more powerful system.

If MS was to drop the price to $350 (which I would love) it would be an admission that they believe their system isn't capable of producing comparable quality games. Which they don't believe based on their statements made by Albert and others. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that $500 price point is very important them or else they would have 180ed on that too. I have a gut feeling PS4 is going to outsell them by a large amount, but to keep the margins close they only need to sell 800K for every million PS4 Sony sells to bring in the same revenue. With all the changes at MS profitability in the Xbox division is becoming important.

Which is as good as admitting it.

If it's false you nip it in the bud, and give your reasons why.

If it's true, but negative for you, you don't acknowledge it and try to divert the conversation onto other things, a la 'did you see Ryse on our near-final console'.

This needs to be repeated, so I'm quoting it. Good point.

I'm not sure they'll be able to manage selling 800K for every 1 million the PS4 sells. Not at $100 more. And definitely not when Sony will probably just have more PS4s to sell than Microsoft has Xbox Ones. 500K is probable though.

I think Sony could have gone a bit more competitive in their marketing. They could have said PS4 is the most powerful system and shown Naughty Dog or Santa Monica game. They could have said they also have multimedia features and multitasking and don't have a stupid paywall for apps. Finally Sony need to let people know more about Instant Game Collection.

Guys, games are more important than graphics. Therefore, the console with the weaker graphics will have the better games. For each pixel you lose a good game point. This has been a known fact since the Wii launched.

seems to me like they're saying: "Yes PS4 is more powerful, but our system allows us to do really cool things".

Which is just fine with me. Now I wanna see Kincet 2.0 games.

That's all yoy really can say i dont blame them. 3rd party might be a wash but first party?

Naughty Dog debut on ps4?

Oh boy

The only Kinect 2.0 games you will see are Sports, mini games, fitness, on rails, kids games and dance games. Oh and insignificant features like voice commands and auto login. But of course keep dreaming about its potential and how much of a impact it will have without MS showing a single game that's mind blowing with Kinect 2.0.

So carefully worded, yet they can't even say that Edge was wrong. And I am not sure why calling your hardware 'complicated' is suddenly a good thing.

I'm scared what Stig's team will do at SONY's Santa Monica Studios.
He is working on that game since God of War 3 ended and we haven't seen/heard anything yet.
:-O

What are they supposed to say?

Not a single goddamn thing.

Or, "We built an extremely powerful console and are confident that users will love the experiences only possible on Xbox One. Gaming is our passion and we would never do anything to jeopardize the bonds of trust we have built up with gamers over the months and years we have been in the gaming business."

To the believers: Your faith will be rewarded. To the doubters: Even if we are never able to win your business, we are confident that once you experience what the Xbox One has to offer, your doubts will disappear."
