Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

I still think mandatory always online check for stuff that could easily work offline is bullshit, I guess I'm not buying the NextBox in the near future, my wallet is happy at least

Just had a thought.....

How is always on any different than PS+? Is anyone upset about that? As soon as you are not paid up, you can't play the game right? Isn't this the same thing?

Love the discussion on this any way you look at it, it sure is going to be interesting

Nothing follows that trajectory does it? I'd expect it will die down eventually. Especially without further comment/updates. Of course that'll only last until they confirm/deny during the unveiling.

If it's true, the best thing PR can do is do nothing.

That bane.gif just made my year. Thank you NEOGAF for cheering me up because it has been a horrible year. I got to forget for a few minutes thanks to that bane.gif.

My stance is still unchanged all ways online = no buy from me.

Broadband only online gaming... ring a bell? Everyone was up in arms at the time, calling it a huge mistake for not supporting 56k as well.

Here are some more stupid analogies that MS made back then:

"Have you ever tried sucking pizza through a straw?"

Because you can still buy games away from PS+ and play them offline on the PS3?

I don't have PS+ to confirm, but I'm pretty sure that even free PS+ games continue to work if the internet connection is dropped.

Not even the same. PS+ is more like a Netflix subscription than anything.

And playable offline

Um, those are way two different things. One is a system. Another is a program on the system. You can still play your games with one of em if you don't have internet.

Take a guess which one it is.

I can still play my PS+ games off line that is the difference. That is the issue with the always on crap. If MS or my ISP have issues then no gaming which is BS.

If this console really is 'always online', how will they handle online infra maintenance.
"Sorry guys, nobody can play any games for the next 12 hours, we'll let you know when you can start playing again..."

How are they remotely comparable? If you buy a PS3 game disc, it'll work regardless of the online status of the console. PS+ is an elaborate rental service, and it even works offline. Hopefully, you realize the idiocy of your posture and you'll think a little bit more before you post next time.

I don't understand how PS+ and Always On is the same thing at all. You are comparing a subscription service ceasing to allow you service once you unsubscribe to the idea of a piece of hardware failing to work if your internet or their servers ever go down.

Here's the difference.

One is an optional service that provides you discounts on games (that you can play even if subscription expires) and gives you features that can compliment your experience.

The other is going to be a mandatory service that will be forced upon everyone and will effect your experience.

Is PS+ a mandatory service?is that exclusively the only way to play your games?

Clearly you weren't that involved with the recent Sim City debacle. If its anything like that, MS will be forced to respond.

However, they may not respond to it until closer to E3, OR they may just respond with the usual "We don't agree with his comments or condone his actions." and apologize if someone was offended but not confirm / nor deny the content of the subject matter of this whole issue was true or not.

They're different in many ways:

- Mainly, you are not forced to get PS+ (yet, at least). If this rumour is true, you are forced to always be online to use the next Xbox.

- You can still play non-Plus games whether online or offline, with no PS+ subscription.

- Plus is giving you extra content for paying. This rumour would lock you out of ANY content should you not be online.

short question:

Have you ever used PS+?

I'm just as unhappy about always online as most of you, but we should put this reaction in perspective. As much as we dislike online only gaming, MS could still get away with it if enough of the non-hardcore market follows along.

Yes it's a good internet reaction, but if MS made this decision long ago, they've probably already written us off. We'll have to stick to non-forced online consoles and hope for the best, basically.

"Sorry guys, nobody can play any games for the next 12 hours, we'll let you know when you can start playing again..."

They keep the authentication servers running to validate game installs/apps/console firmwares etc, and take the store/multiplayer down? They can have multiple servers that they alternate? Have some down for maintenance while the others are up, and vice versa.

The bane.gif is legendary, truly classic. I think it is going to be really interesting how this develops, and it's going to be a fun ride going by this thread. I'll get a NextBox because I get every game system, but I can totally understand the uproar.

Terrible attempt at backpedalling, when you get caught saying something extremely dumb and then say "lol i was just trolling" it's not too credible. Also trolling is probably not the smartest thing to do here...

iunno, the guy he was "trolling with" seems to agree that they do it all the time back n fourth

but it was pretty stupid either way to be doing that....

Wow, amazing how fast this thread is moving.

Seems to be sending a pretty strong message about always online DRM though, which is good regardless of whether this is just an unsubstantiated rumour or not.

If it's true, the best thing PR can do is do nothing.

When you put it like that...

I guess I was working on the assumption that MS won't say anything. Although this is taking on a life of it's own.

I keep thinking they'll confirm/deny at their own pace. And they'll have something, something, to sweeten the deal. What could that be? I have no idea but could speculate like crazy.

EDIT:

Clearly you weren't that involved with the recent Sim City debacle. If its anything like that, MS will be forced to respond.

However, they may not respond to it until closer to E3, OR they may just respond with the usual "We don't agree with his comments or condone his actions." and apologize if someone was offended but not confirm / nor deny the content of the subject matter of this whole issue was true or not.

No I wasn't!

Maybe my thinking was formed by the fact that these rumours have been flying, to various degrees, for a while and they've said nothing. And I also guess I was talking about "the most official response" (i.e. rather than Twitter a conference).

Let's see though. I'll try to follow the intensity over the weekend.

My guess is their market research showed that broadband subscriptions coupled with online consumer purchasing habits have probably outweighed the loss of consumers with spotty connections. Maybe they have a number that shows what purchasing habits the users without connection to broadband have.

I don't like the decision, it's one that will eventually happen, but I don't think we're ready for it here in the US. I can't speak for broadband consumer base in other countries.

Stands as what? That he personally doesn't see an issue with always online DRM because he's a self-centered weirdo living a double life as Sweet Billy? Plenty of people think like that.

Pretty sure the Sweet Billy thing is unique. I think most people can come up with a better name for their their other life.

I am a multie counsel owner but ive owned both xbox systems day one. If Microsoft goes through with this I am done with the brand. The battle lines are drawn and if true time will tell if the requirement was worth it.

What? I can still play offline without Playstation Plus and am not even required to be a member to play games online should I choose to. But it sure is nice to actually be given something for being a member.

Don't conflate the issues. Very few people give a shit about him saying "deal with it" and insulting small towns with bad internet. We understand that stuff was him dumb trolling his friend. The online only implication is what's gotten people up in arms here.
