Not at all, he is cold as ice:

Its funny that he's obviously reading this forum yet he hasn't the balls to post anything or even defend himself.

At this point I think it'd be really interesting to see the Durango come out as an online only console if only to see how the market would respond to that. I think there is a genuine market for games that can be played offline and it would be interesting to see an opportunity develop for small developers to embrace that market and market their games toward that market.

Gies is just baiting people here, because anyone who is willing to offer a real response to this is exactly the kind of person he wants to block on Twitter

You normally are playing a game on the pubs terms. Hence the license agreements on the box or linked to on the products.

This is not an issue for one main reason.

It will be a business decision that they made whose terms are disclosed upfront.

If you do not have access to internet, if you have any fears of servers being shut down or launch errors, simply do not purchase the product.

It is up to MS to put whatever feature they feel is necessary. Your response is to either support them or avoid them like the plague. I have not and do not have any plans for purchasing Diablo 3 or Sim City. That is my way of sowing displeasure at the choices made releasing those products.
something tells me microsoft won't be upfront about the fact in their advertising. Trying to sneak it by is as anti-consumerist as it gets.

First of all, this guy is obviously an arrogant prick. Do I want him fired because of his statements? Not really, but I want XBOX to be successful and the chances are less if the people in charge are this arrogant.

Now to the issue of always on.

IF this is true, lets review the pros and cons:

Arguments for Always On:

+Game developers can focus more on online capabilities

This doesnt make much sense to me, game developers already do, as the majority of Xbox gamers are online. Why does the requirement of always online help here?

+ Games will be cheaper because companies will get more revenue due to blocked Used/Second Hand games sales.

This is almost a separate issue, but event if this is also true, I doubt we will see prices cheaper for XBOX than the Sony version.

+ Games can take advantage of cloud processing

They still could even if always online is not a requirement, although it makes it easier to design games around these features if it is a requirement. That said this is a true positive if and only if they can develop innovative real-time features here.

Arguments against:

- Alienates a whole subsection of gamers who cant help where they live, or if they or their parents can afford quality internet.

Not sure how many 360 users play offline, but this wouldnt effect me 95% of the time as I have FIOS Quantum at home and my house is wired for ethernet. I used to have comcast and it would go down all the time, sometimes for a day. I would hate it if I couldnt game offline because of Comcast. Also I bring xbox to my parents house during the holidays (when I usually get alot of new games) and they have no working internet in the Basement where I play. I typically play single player or split screen games with family down there and this would not allow that to happen. THIS IS A MAJOR NEGATIVE for a lot of people. Cant spin it any other way. Not sure if any of the positives listed above could even offset this one.

- Bugs If their servers go down or there are some networking hiccups causing bugs your xbox could become a brick.

This would likely be an issue at the beginning, but overtime they would hopefully figure this out. That said on launch it could be a disastrous if nobody can play their shiny new system due to XBOX Live outage. Just makes me nervous.

Bottom line is it is hard to imagine how the positives can outweigh the negatives unless we start saving mucho dinero. Microsoft better show me something amazing that offsets this.

Apparently this thread full of concerned gamers is actually full of "vomit and diarrhea." Charming. But hey, there might be "one good post" amongst it all.

...this thread contains homophobic slurs directed specifically at Arthur Gies and features an animated .gif using sexual slurs against Microsoft as a punchline. (edit: see immediately above.)

"Vomit and diarrhea" sounds about accurate to me.

Do you also boycott Steam? If valve were to hit some financial problems and were forced to shut down steam how many games would you lose?

Except Valve would get bought out and Steam would continue. Just like when Impulse was bought by Gamestop and D2D by Gamefly (though some games weren't available after). Fact is that with the PC due to it being an open platform all of the games would be available to be downloaded in one way shape or form. Many of us that use Steam keep a record of every one of our purchases. I wouldn't be against downloading all of the games I purchased if Valve were to go out of business.

That wouldn't be possible with a closed platform like the next Xbox.

It's odd to ask for rational discussion and then turn around and be flippant and generalizing about a message board when there have been some pretty decent responses among the gifs and images.

Gies tends to talk about the internet talking about an issue, that's the problem. I mean, I know he gets shit on a lot so it's kind of a chicken-or-the-egg thing, but why is he asking for "reasonable arguments" from other people? Can't you just skip the internet part and come up with your own?

If it doesn't make money it will be labeled a bad decision. That is entirely separate from whether it is good for consumers. And while it's not on you to come up with a 20-minute PowerPoint presentation by tomorrow afternoon, it seems like there should be some reasonably evident benefit for consumers that someone could hypothetically come up with. The only thing I can imagine is an OnLive-type game buffet service that actually works--and that is VERY arguable and up to personal preference as to whether that is better than individual game ownership, even assuming the technology worked perfectly, which it surely doesn't at the moment.

Cloud gaming things are pretty cool.

I think in-game live scores from sporting events is cool.

Maybe they launch the IPTV service with customizable channel subscriptions and customizable channel layouts so that you can have the ESPN ticker tape at the bottom of any channel and have it there while watching your favorite show(Justified for me)(Also, this is highly doubtful so nobody point out the difficulties in getting this done to me please).

Maybe for a game like destiny, bungie can actively put new assets into the game in real time and completely alter your experience in one of the "raids" of the game or something.

Gies has a Gaf account. He should come here and find out for himself.

He owes someone $10 based on a bet, so while he uses his account to browse here he hasn't posted since he was called out on using the words "secret sauce". I personally think he should be banned. Not because of his hilarious, goal bending mindset, but the fact that he still comes here despite the fact he made a bet with another user and has played hush hush about it. Granted, he hasn't posted since being exposed, but that's probably why he stopped posting in the first place. He did not come to defend himself here during SimCity's debacle.

Does he think by playing silent everyone will forget the fact he owes a user money?

Yeah he is just Creative Director of one of like 10 or 12 different teams, executive is a total misinterpretation of the title

Before literally bringing the pitchforks and carrying him to a pile of wood...I do think it is worth considering that guys like David Jaffe have referenced him as a good guy not just in this thread but in posts from like 2007 - also Cory Balrog seemed to have had a back and forth with him about some Kotaku debacle Cory dealt with which is kind of ironic (GAF detective fail?), this was about the most mis-timed and inappropriate remarks I have ever seen so probably any of his friends are not able to completely save him from GAF wrath...

Maybe this will end up being the most epic case of "taking one for the team" and prevent the chance (slim to moderate, who knows what it is) of this sort of policy happening, that is the only silver lining I can find...

Even if there are games I want I won't be supporting the console, and I hope others would follow suit if they go head with this.

There's a guy who works two minimum wage jobs. He just saved up enough money to buy the new 720 because he loves Madden. It's the only game he buys every year.

The problem is that he just moved out of his mother's house, so bills are tight. He doesn't have broadband because

1) It's expensive
2) Where he lives, the internet service providers don't have plans he can afford.

You just kept him from playing video games with your always-on connection.

Another guy just started college. He loved Xbox when he was in high school, but the college doesn't allow you to hook your Xbox up to the internet.

You just kept him from playing video games with your always-on connection.

There's a child who got a new Xbox for Christmas. His parents can't be bothered to set up the console so he can get on Xbox Live.

You just kept him from playing video games with your always-on connection.

There's a place out in the country that doesn't have any means of reliable broadband access. A family has scraped together enough money to buy a new Xbox.

You just kept them from playing games with your always-on connection.

Thunderstorm? No video games.

Poor people? No video games.

Not allowed? No video games.

Not tech savvy? No video games.

I don't know if Microsoft realizes this, but their brand was built on college-age males who aren't rich.

You're punishing them.

Well done.

Something this large (no internet = no gameplay at all) they can't sneak this one by the average consumer without getting in trouble for false or misleading advertising.

I think we should just stop giving that clown gies more attention.

Our time will be just ruined on his vomit inducing tweets and garbage remarks.

I would love to see more memes or gifs on the other hand!

Hey, here's an idea:

He is the "journalist". Isn't it HIS job to inform potential readers as to what the pros, cons and caveats of always online are and provide valid reasons for his obvious support for it?
He's the Reviews Editor. #DealWithIt

Dude is a troll and a bad one at that. He won't respond. He'll just hide behind his twitter account like he always does. Atleast JSchirer from Kotaku has the guts to post and defend the website and does a great job at it. Jaffe posts and defends things he says. Aegies? Ha.

Thanks for omitting the tweets surrounding those two that provide proper context. That's not manipulative at all.

56raXsK.jpg
Sure, there's more context but he seems to be only saying that defensively "I'm totally not defending Microsoft or always-online here, but..."

He's the one who wants to hear reasons here, not Microsoft. (What, is he gonna forward those reasons to Microsoft?) If he's genuinely looking for valid arguments, why immediately discount them if the discussion forum they originate from simply for having a subjectively shitty title or poor quality of surrounding comments?

A valid point is valid independent of its source.

Let's wait and see. It'll .gif worthy if he does, of that much I'm sure.
