Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

Sometimes its not wise to have your own personal twitter. I remember people jumping down the throat of Rob from MCV for something he said, and it was just a personal comment...

He was pretty douchey in his outlook and general attitude, but I don't think he should lose his job over it.

He really should have made it clearer that he was not representing Microsoft when he sent follow up tweets last night -- the world and his dog are reporting this as though its straight from the corporate entity, Microsoft. Its not his fault these rumours are circulating, Microsoft actually are a fair bit to blame.

The working world seems fairly adept at marking emails "any views expressed are not the views of..." or "without prejudice" or what have you -- yet the moment anyone employed turns to twitter, be they a journalist, a creative director or professional footballer -- its like their brains just go out the window!

You just made me realize how Twitter could be profitable! They could charge for .sigs that do not count to the 140 char limit. Sig file will be attached to the twitter account and showed after every tweet by that user. They could charge for use of this service as well as change of .sigs and rotation of .sigs.

Fuck this guy by the way. Try living in Australia where half the Internet infrastructure is so outdated your lucky to get dial up speeds off your "adsl2+" connection and there's nothing you can do about it!

It's okay. In 8-12 years when the NBN is installed near your home you'll be always on and lightning speed! You...don't mind waiting for that time right?

You forgot the part where a ridiculous amount of people and the media are taking it as a 100% conformation and various people are either leaping to the defence of Microsoft or jumping down their throat.

On the basis of a twitter rant.

well whats done is done . none of us can stop this trainwreck anymore even if we wanted to .

the news is spreading like wildfire across the net.

Now as long MS refuses to answer this thing will just keep growing and growing
Hell i wouldn't be supprised if CNN or FOX news join in the dogpile.

Could Microsoft not use this to sneak in some other consumer unfriendly policies/practices but disguise it under 'tada...we do do allow offline play', people rejoice in something that should have been thee al along and quietly forget about the other smaller things microsoft sneaked in?

In your area people steal internet wires?

imagine if therre was gold all around you in your community. In wires, rail lines, installations, whatever. Imagine you were poor or just a plain greedy criminal. Would you not try to get your hands on that?

let me present to you the highly valuable metal that is

Copper

Imagine this was one big MS troll. Positioning themselves as an anticonsumer device only to reveal that it's the complete opposite!

No more Xbox LIVE!

The next xbox won't be always online, only half of the 77 million xbox consoles are connected to the internet, and the ones that do are not always connected. That would kill the console's marketshare. MS wants to be in more living rooms, not less. It's not happening.

I just feel like all these rumors only really are coloring the hardcore's view- the general consumer has no idea.

I don't think Gaf is under any illusion any more about the wider implications of always online or lack there of.

We all fought through the Wii years. Us remaining survivors are left beaten and broken, but also somewhat older and wiser.

Wire stealing also happens a lot here in Portugal. Sometimes several miles of wiring disappear from night to day, copper is very valuable.
