I went to bed and page 40 something, and wake up to this. Whoa boy! This is spreading like a wildfire.
At this point I'm pretty convinced that they're at least seriously considering it. Whether or not it makes it to the final console is another matter. Maybe they'll make restrictions lighter or something. In any case, someone is pushing for some kind of always online retriction.
As soon as it jumps to mainstream media, this shit is going to bomb harder than Windows 8. For the very same reasons.
Maybe it's no used games, but you only need to verify your games every 3 days.

I really don't think that this outcry is enough to change MSs plans. A- Its pretty much only a big deal in the enthusiast sphere and B- the same sphere would be upset once it were to be announced and MS has to know this.
Something to do with usage of the phrase "secret sauce" IIRC.
If they are you'd think they'd at least ease it in, like having to boot a game online but after that you can go offline, or something. I dunno, it'll be sure interesting to see the effect it has on sales.
This site is too polarizing (along with rest of the net) we're such a small portion of those that buy consoles, it's hard to tell how it'll go down with the wider public.

This could be a life or death situation similar to them deciding whether to listen to Epic to bump up the RAM from 256MB to 512MB for the 360. All eyes are on MS now.
If this always online requirement turns out true I think it's pretty safe to assume that MS isn't interested in becoming the number one console worldwide, they just want to be relevant in the US and the UK and that's it.
In other words they don't give a fuck about the rest of Europe, Asia and South America.
Going deeper. Damn.

It just seems odd that a corporate guy like this would do PR suicide over something that has such a polarizing effect. I wonder if this is some attempt to let us down but raise us up when they announce it won't have an always on connection. Then we'll look past whatever other issues there are because we'll be "so relieved" that it's not always on.
We all thought the same about the Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, and Playstation 3...
Arrogance is best served with lower sales compared to the previous console.

Wow, this news story wasn't a 'thing' when I retired to the bedroom last night. Talk about sleeping during the storm. An understatement it is, but this Adam Orth guy is certainly something else.
Anyway, if this little episode doesn't persuade Microsoft to ditch their always-online plans for the Next Xbox - that has all but been confirmed with these tweets - then nothing will. This outrage is justified, DRM is a shitty fucking practice, and hopefully the decision to include it will bite them in the ass so that we don't ever have to tolerate it again.
I just hope that Sony, in their own impressionable sort of way, doesn't have a change of heart with the PS4 and decide to follow suit. Because Sony does like to play Follow The Leader from time to time.

I feel like now I'm apologizing for MS- I'm not, it sucks, etc. I just have to say that the majority of the purchasing audience has no idea that there is a new MS system coming, nor do they know or prob care about any of these rumors

Not at first... but once grandma's start giving it to little Timmy who's parents don't believe in WiFi and don't want to stream cables everywhere, or when Microsoft's servers inevitably have a hiccup and suddenly there are 5 million people who have nothing but a giant paper weight for several hours.
At least when PSN went down, people could still play single player.
(edit) The great part of never owning a 360 is that I can safely say if there is always online for the 720, I can safely say there is nothing it will ever have that will entice me to want to buy one. Hell, not really anything the PS4 could do if they pulled it as well.

Nope. I have no reason to buy this console.
It's a hard gamble. But I can't support a console that I don't truly own.
Putting a 680 in there won't change my stance either.

Sony are in talks with devs/pubs over PS4 sure; but more important are the final customers of the device. Mark Cerny has shown himself to be a damn fine researcher in terms of deciding what will make the best device, I have 0 doubt that in all his work he forgot about the final customer.
Hes only made it easier for the publisher to produce and interact with the customer whilst enhancing how the customer can utilise game content.
MS are not thinking about anyone but themselves. This is MS boardroom stuck up "if we throw enough money at it it'll be a success" talk; all of this is to try and push themselves further on peoples living rooms, they've forgotten to ask "why do people want us there in the first place?"
100% anti-consumer and 100% bad decision making.
I don't actually think the third console 'curse' is a myth, I think there are real social reasons behind it.
Console 1 - Market Penetration
Console 2 - Build on the Gains
Console 3? The producer feels they already 'own' a section of the market and lose focus, bad decisions are made that should never have been made (Cartridges, lack of executive oversight on the PS3 development process, Always Online); they think its 'business as usual' and lose focus.
Unfortunately for MS they lost this gen against a seriously weakened Sony; they made the gains but the press reaction to them has made them feel king - their not.

I've said before - Xbox as a gaming device is a blip to MS as an organisation; either it starts making major returns or the risk of new console launches starts to grow too great.
MS will throw everything to enhance this machines profit line, including no second hand games and always online ads.
If it fails? Ballmer will likely pull away from the gaming business entirely, the man spends huge amounts of cash just to stay in employment. Everything he does is a cynical political move. If he can turn Xbox into a cash cow? Great! If he can't? Its not his investors biggest concern.
