Microsoft Taunts Sony: 'Bring it On'

The entire erea under the disc tray and next to the usb ports is solid vents.

Edit: Sorry, thought I was at the end of the thread.

You mean that part that is under the lip? The part we can't see that is parallel to the ground in the front? That's all vent slots?

That would've been better. Although someone mentioned in another thread that Phil said they'll have a big surprise about the PS3 controller at their February show. So that design has likely been dropped (which would explain why anytime a PS3 game has been demoed by a developer its been done with a Dual Shock 2). All they should do is change the R2 and L2 buttons to triggers. Keep that basic design and change the R2 and L2 buttons to triggers.

Improving the analog sticks to a notch above mediocrity would be nice too.

I don't think I've ever seen such a ridiculous statement, and that's saying alot. You're now taking the fanboy wars and trying to apply it to corporate strategy?

It reminds me of the Seinfeld where George is working for the Yankees, and says he thinks they can sign Ken Griffey and two other superstars and "not have to give up too much" :lol :lol

Microsoft is going to gain marketshare. Sony's job is not to kill the competetion. Their job is to make a great product / business and insure it's future. Apple used to have a 90% MP3 market share and it's fallen to 80%. So, is Apple failing to do "their job" in that industry?

In every market, there is a settling of market share, and no company can have 100%, 90% or even 80% if they have competitors that are determined to be in that market. Look at Nike, Coke, whatever.

You are comparing fanboy wars to corporate strategy. Also, I think the tone of some your posts are dishonorable. I'm speaking in general terms of Sony maintaining dominance, because that's what they have to do in the videogame market to retain what they have now, and this will be more difficult with Microsoft grinding down your marketshare.

In all honestly MS was grinding down more of Nintendo's marketshare this generation than Sony's. They split up what was N64's marketshare last generation. Sony has gotten even more dominate in that comparision.

Sony didn't even come up with that 1.5 comment. That was started by some website IIRC. It was just repeated by a Sony rep, and not even a major one at that. It's just sad that the MTV and E3 showings gave that comment a lot more traction than it deserved.

The PS3 design is awesome IMO. I really like it. And I hated the PS2 when it was first revealed. I thought it was hideous. But it looked a lot better in person. I'm hoping the PS3 looks even better in person, b/c I think it's nice now. But I really like the black a lot more than I like the grey. I'm kinda hoping the PLAYSTATION 3 chime being on a black bg means they're gonna go with black again. The PS1 chime was on white, and the PS2 on black IIRC. It probably means nothing, but black is beautiful. Too bad the controller being grey/silver probably means that's the default color. :(

The controller suprise better be good. I don't care about triggers, although I won't mind either. I'm just suprised the damn thing hasn't been held by anyone outside of Sony yet. It better not be a wacky controller design. Give me the same number of buttons or more (come on 6-face/4-shoulder layout) and the same symmetrical analog layout (or at least keep the d-pad placement functional). I'd like to see it have some functionality tied to Eyetoy. It would be great if they used the two to give you the same freehand control style of the Revmote without sacrificing traditional play. PEACE.

he should have trolled the controller instead :/

I think he didn't say anything about the controller because he's actually HOPING they bring it to market.

You know, reverse psychology and all. ;P

Microsoft will win the console wars...for the first month or two before PS3's userbase surpasses it. I suppose they'll always have that.

Given a holiday jump, do you really think 2 months is all it will take?

I was exaggerating. MS will probably sell 5-6 million X360s before the PS3 comes out in all territories. Still, its not going to take PS3 long to top the X360 base.

And if this doesn't come to fruitation........

People thought the GAF PSP meltdown was bad. This might turn people suicidial if the PS3 doesn't do just that

Maybe I'm just a fan of slot loading drives, and shiny curved surfaces but I think the PS3 hardware design is better than the Xbox 360 design. Neither one really looks that good or bad to me. The Revolution has the cleanest and most striking design though. If all I cared about was how game systems looked I'd pick the Revolution over the PS3 and Xbox 360 easily.

I'm kind of surprised by the statements from the MS bigwigs. Up until now MS has basically just brushed off Sony's constant attacks on the 360 and just stayed focused on their gameplan. I actually thought they were being a little too weak before by responding to Sony's claims of hardware supremacy by saying "well their system is better in some ways and our system is better in some ways." I thought the proper response would have been to just highlight the ways in which your system is superior or point out the fact that the hardware in the two systems has extremely similar specs (more so than any previous console generation).

Now they're talking a big game and I guess you could say it could be perceived as weakness to have to call Sony out like this.

I think it's going to be a very interesting battle especially in North America. I agree that Sony has done what they needed to (show some videos and hardware and claim superiority), but I also think MS has done what they needed to. Getting an extra holiday season, doing the first ever worldwide launch, the huge Pepsi every-ten-minutes promotion, the cover of Time magazine, the MTV special. These are all promotions and exposure Xbox 1 never had to build up it's brand awareness prior to launch. The Xbox 360 launch lineup most people think is extremely diverse and probably the best system launch lineup yet. Launching with a huge RPG like Elder Scrolls is pretty much unheard of. Having the new Xbox Live service from day one is going to be very beneficial as well. What they've done is more than enough to sell out of every single console that they manufacture this year. I also think having games like Gears of War, Splinter Cell 4, and Halo 3 waiting in the spoke is huge. Xbox 360 is not a system that is going to have a big launch and then run out of steam or get forgotten under the hype for other console launches. I think MS has crossed the t's and dotted the i's, but as other people have pointed out the only way for MS to beat Sony now is probably dependent upon Sony doing many things wrong.

I usually dont get involved in these consol war threads but I just wanted to say that Allard is truly an annoying retard. Just looking at his smug "hip" face, with his trendy glasses fills me with anger. Damn I hate this guy.

what have ms done that will ensure them more marketshare this gen? some gafers seem to treat this as a given, and i'm not sure where they're coming from. are we operating on microsoft's premise that a headstart is everything? cos the only development coup i can think of is ridge racer 6. and for all the talk of "mindshare" and "momentum" the ps2 continues to expand its lead over xbox.

i don't often follow sales, and i don't know how this generation will shake out. but i'm curious here.

Sony will put out a console like they want, when they want and what Microsoft do will not change their plans.
I'm sure Nintendo thought the same thing when they released the N64. Sony would be smart to at least consider what MS and Nintendo are doing if they want to stay on top.

That's actually a really cool idea. If there was some sort of visual strip of material on the top of the PS3 controller that Eyetoy could easily recognize and then determine if the controller is moving closer or farther away or if its moving left or right etc. If Sony could do something like that they might be able to get ports of revolution games! There would be some problems like playing in well lit rooms and whatnot but I think this is something feasible that Sony could to to undermine Revolutions strengths. Do any of you think this is possible and if not why? I can think of something right now, and thats not wanting to swing a dual shock around like a sword and also not having the controller attachments and stuff for different types of games. But it might be able to know where the controller is moving in 3d space, and that would be an accomplishment.

Not vents on the batarang controller no sale.

The DC wasn't dead at launch, but there were many signs of its demise, with many of the large publishers ( i.e. EA ) not supporting it.

X360 at least has strong developer support. ( maybe not in japan ), but definitely in the West.

I personally think the X360 will take a sizable chunk of market share in NA and will at the end of the generation be about neck and neck with the PS3 in terms of units sold by the end of the generation.

SolidSnakex said:
It might not be fair to compare it, but its also not fair to say the system that had the fastest selling launch at that time was dead.

It just means that the launch period does not mean anything. Early adopters buy a console no matter what the future is.

I heard rumours that the Nintendo Revolution didnt need vents, since the wave of air coming from the controller when you wave it in the air is enough.

Still a boomarang-vibrator-pad ??? :lol

$ony will own europe this time (again), but excluded me. Xbox360 will owned me this time..
and it will begin right on Dec 2nd.

4 pages of discussion about vents. Are vents the new owls? :lol

All I would say to Microsoft is: when you go into the woods, don't poke the bear.

Seriouly, none of this is even remotely close to a given, especially since we don't know how much Sony can eat on pricing the PS3. Given their financials, I don't know is they can eat on hardware the level they did with PS2 back in their rosier days.

And if the PS3 costs $500 or more, it will take significnatly longer to catch up to X360. $500 ish MSRP is no where near a mass market price. As the price increases incrementally, the potential market shrinks exponentially in direct relation.

Until Sony announces the price, I consider this anyone's game.

I don't think sony will price the PS3 at $500. In fact I think they are going to surprise everyone with the price (like the PSP). With Microsoft showing all its cards with regards to hardware and features, Sony can easily mix and match the features of the PS3 to be affordable and still beat more powerful than X360.

Sony will have the PS3 at a good price.

How much that hurts them will be up for debate.

But for sure, they can't keep doing this gen after gen if MS force a 5 year cycle - they need a plan B or MS will eventually bleed them white

Not to run damage control but you guys do realize that the point of his comment was that our hardware is real, it's working, and it's here for you to play right now. He probably wouldn't mention the rushed and underwhelming part but that's more of a software issue anyways.

To really drive the point home he should have said I was so glad I got to play all those great PS3 games at TGS or something to that effect. I mean Sony said we would and dropped the ball but MGS3 covered for that. Then again it could have been playable behind closed door who knows. Sony even if they don't have much in the way of playable games have much smarter showings than MS as far as image is concerned. I fully expect them to resonably deliver but if they fumble they're gonna have a much more difficult time than their arrogance will let them believe.

Going by how people have acted toward MS showing the 360 playable too early you can't really blame Sony for not wanting to show the PS3 yet. They've an image for the system and they've got to make sure the playable are consistant with that or else they're going to have to spend the months leading up to the PS3 launch trying to prove to people that it is next gen instead of building more hype as they've been doing now.

This is a picture of a prototype of the first HD-DVD player

toshibahdx.jpg

This is the manufacturing prototype for Toshiba's HD-XA1 HD DVD player. There are no official specs yet, and both the street date and retail price are TBA, but current plans call for it to arrive in stores in the 1st Qtr of 2006 (look for it to be priced somewhere between $1000 and $1500). We understand it's a solid, weighty unit, and the while faceplate rises to allow you to insert the disc and access hidden playback controls. That blue light under the display tells you it's playing back a disc.

Looks boxy as all hell, like my first DVD player. Hmm..coincedentally that too was a Toshiba. Wondering why if it's similar tech they can't get it streamlined. Anyways if that price above holds true then I see not only Gaming enthusiasts picking up the PS3 for BRD but AV Home Theater enthusiasts as well. Even a 500 buck price tag on the PS3 isn't looking to shabby now compared to that.

That photo is using extreme foreshortening. Also some of the holes are just dummy holes for design sake.

Foreshortening doesn't change the fact that half the end is perfed ... it just makes the entire end look bigger.

As far as dummy holes, how do you know? Could you see it close enough to tell some of them weren't actually all-the-way through the case? As long as the hole is through the case, it will help dissipate heat.
