Microsoft: 'We have no intention of shooting the Core'

Microsoft has reiterated that it has no plans to ditch the core audience that helped propel Xbox 360 to 50 million worldwide sales, despite the amazing success of Kinect, which sold eight million units during its first 60 days and still doesn't work in my house.

"Obviously we're very excited by the success of Kinect," US PR bod David Dennis told IGN at CES this week. "But we have no intention of abandoning the Xbox 360 audience that bought in originally. We're very aware of the key role the enthusiastic core audience played in making the Xbox 360 what it is, and we'll continue to support and develop [games] like Halo and Gears of War."

Unsurprisingly, Dennis also said that there are some core-focused games in development yet to be announced.

On a related note, we're also told to expect more improvements to Xbox Live in future. Apparently Microsoft has mainly invested in behind-the-scenes upgrades this past year to help accommodate the releases of Halo: Reach and Call of Duty: Black Ops, but it remains keen to add features Live users want.

Breaking news: Microsoft continues to target the market it has the advantage in.

It's still good to know that there might be a game this year that will make me turn on my 360 again.

So get ready for more Fable, Gears, and Halo. We're firing on all cylinders.

When did Microsoft become Nintendo?

I'm getting mixed messages here. I'd consider my self a core gamer... and gears and halo don't interest me all that much.

I don't know. You can take that quote in two directions.

Reach is pretty fun, but Halo isn't going to get me excited anymore. MS needs to stop disbanding all of their studios and start pushing out some great first/second party IPs.

This smacks of those Reggie interviews in which he said "Animal Crossing is coming this year. How could you say we're ignoring the core audience?"

Reach looks fun, but doesn't really entice me to play it considering how quickly I was bored of Halo 3.
Same goes for GoW3. I traded in Gears 2, I never trade in games. :s

Halo RPG would be awesome.

I believe the sentence quoted uses Halo and Gears as examples, not as a statement that excludes other core games that they intend to bring to X360. If their confirmation, in the same interview, of other unannounced core games in development doesn't make this clear, certainly, their reveal of Codename: Kingdoms last year at E3 as an exclusive game should show that they are doing more than just Halo and Gears stuff. New stuff. I'm always surprised that so many on GAF like to turn periods into question marks so much of the time when there's no reason to.

Core =/= shooter, MS. I demand Viva Pinata and Kameo sequels.

Well, the combined sales of Gears 1 and 2 + Halo 3 and Reach absolutely dwarf anything else. They're the two franchises that appeal to the most amount of 360 owners.

When they got three mass market series.:lol

Two are really big, and the other is slightly more niche. Halo would be Zelda, Gears would be 3D Mario, and Fable would be Metroid... on a really good day.:D

They seem to think... well fuck it works for Nintendo.

On Kinect vs. the Hardcore

Crytek's exclusive Codename: Kingdoms was mentioned and Dennis stressed that there are a number of core-focused titles in development that have not been announced.
Eurogamer seems to have forgotten the Crytek thing.

A good Sci Fi RPG would be awesome. Not Deus Ex, not Alpha Protocal, but a good space RPG. I like Mass Effect, but I'd love a new turn based/semi realtime game like KotOR.

I thought Halo would be 3D Mario. Anyways Metroid has sort of fallen off, I think Fable is doing a lot better. Donkey Kong is probably going to end up being bigger though. Also I agree that Microsoft needs to invest more in first party studios.

Where can I sign?

This is what I have been thinking as well. Hopefully MS doesn't alternate a few franchises each year as their "dedication". As long as 3rd party sales are strong those will still be available. As we have seen, 3rd parties will bail out for greener pastures if situations change.

MS needs some new IPs for the core.

Why do you give a fuck if a game is made by a first-party studio?
Maybe that wasn't the right wording. I want them to push hard for unique games for the 360, these don't have to be first party but Microsoft needs to support them with budgets, advertising, etc. PS3 has tons of awesome esclusives coming out, but the 360's core experience is mostly multi plat games that I can already play on my PS3.

Aren't they saying this like for years now but are constantly developing less exclusives, loosing exclusives (Mass Effect...) and loosing first party studios that were developing core games?

I am confused...

Lost faith in Microsoft a long time ago. The 360 may still be the best console but if you want great exclusive core games there is no way around the PS3.

I think it's crazy that they even have to ackowledge this at all. Is there anyone that seriously thinks they'll stop making, backing and supporting non Kinect games?

There's nothing to be afraid of.

Fable IV will be steeped in mediocrity and lack in focus like the the last iteration.

Fixed.

Fable 2 is the best game in the series so far, and a very good game in general.

I blinked and beat it. For some super epic amazing RPG, it sure is short. It couldn't have taken me more than 10 hours to beat. And most of the side content isn't very compelling.
