How would this work for someone who doesn't have time to play properly, but wants to tool around and explore the world at his own pace?

Perfectly. I'm able to play maybe an hour (2 max) per day* and I've done only two main story missions while running around and doing a bunch of random shit throughout the world. It's almost perfect for it because you can just jump in and start killing shit, do a few side thingies, and then peace.

I just want to say that there is some of the finest voice acting I've ever heard in a video game in a long time. Then again, I shouldn't expect anything less of Troy Baker and Alastair Duncan, absolutely top talent for this incredible game.

Cough. Nolan North. Cough.

You got a wife and kids?
If they died and you got your ass kicked wtf would you do? :p shrug it off? Also, I think that the wraith aspect of the story is fairly interesting because I know nothing about that character.

I thought this aspect was actually rather well handled by the fact that they don't waste 29 minutes on the set-up and the sequences chain together quite rapidly with cool enough transitions between cutscenes and tutorial gameplay.

Sure it's commonplace but well executed and short enough to not be a pain imo. And as I stated in my previous post, I'm really not here for the story :p

I'm absolutely loving this game so far except for one little issue i have with it. the environments are not very varied. it the map that you see at the beginning of the game all you get though out or are there other, more diverse looking, areas?

i'm talking about the fact that it seems almost impossible to have a main character these days in "AAA" gaming that
ISN'T on a revenge quest for his wife in some way

i would like to have some kind of intro sequence other than that over and over

how about

you're a ranger

you're out hunting fluffy bunnies

a fluffy bunny manages to sever your carotid artery.

you now have a bloodlust in the afterlife for fluffy bunnies.

actually that sounds dope as hell

Dick the Dumb got an easy kill on me when I was starting the game... I kept stupidly going back for more despite how overpowered he was becoming. This was before I got my head around all the strength/weakness stuff. Now his power level is at a 22. He basically just insta-kills me, and he's always surrounded by a swarm.

He doesn't even challenge me when I show up anymore. He just cracks wise and shit.

The fucking insane number of reinforcements can get pretty obnoxious after a while, especially when the not-very-distinct enemy designs make it difficult to tell who you can counter, who you have to stun first, who can use ranged attacks, etc. Did get a pretty sweet moment when I rushed through a gigantic horde of mooks and executed the warchief in the middle of them, followed by them all running off in quick succession.

That's amazing. Maybe you can get away with sniping him? Or a stealth kill? What's his weaknesses?

I'll double check when I get back home, but I think he's afraid of blowing up or burning or something. The trouble is he never seems to hang out around bombs and campfires...

I might have to take him down later once I'm more powerful/ have skills that involve fire.

Wasn't there another CG trailer for this game, besides:

"You do his bidding?"

"You... will...too."

I seem to remember one with 2 factions fighting, one storming the others castle. Ally is crucified before them, before she escapes/blows herself up with magic. Maybe that was a different game.

Yeah, the actual premise is tired. How they did it was cold and brutal. I actually felt something from it, having a wife and daughter. Worked well enough.

You like Japanese games don't you (notthattheresanythingwrongwiththat). That bunny game sounds godawful. The revenge quest is a basic trope and one of my personal favorites. It can be done well or poorly and there are varying endings and outcomes that can easily change its overall tone or message. It is actually quite varied and open to interpretation as far as tropes go.

The movies Kill Bill and Taken are both revenge tropes and are quite different and varied in their execution and the feeling they leave the viewer with upon conclusion. If anybody else enjoys the revenge/vengeance trope, a bit of a twist on it, SoM's sword and sorcery setting and a bit of the ol' ultraviolence then you owe it to yourself to get the book "Best Served Cold" by British fantasy author Joe Abercrombie. It is fucking awesome

I was not impressed with the combat in the videos, and I assumed it was just going to be Assassin's Creed with Batman combat that gets drastically easier as you progress.

Well, I don't feel like I was wrong about that, yet I am finding it much more satisfying overall than either of those series (although Arkham Asylum was still the best to me for an overall package). What I really really like about this game though is that it fixes my biggest gripe with the Assassin's Creed games (well two things if you count the shitty combat in AC), and that is that the assassinations actually feel like assassination missions, not just "find target, get close, insta-gib without effort" bullshit that was all those games revolved around.

I always hated how you never really found out much info that affected the gameplay or way you approach the assassinations and it was basically "find informant to unlock target on map then proceed to kill".

You don't actually have to find out any information about captains to kill them (so far) in this, but I like the fact that you can gain knowledge about their strengths and weaknesses. This is a way better implementation of what Assassin's Creed should have been doing from the very start, but never did.

i'm married, and i still see it as a pathetic attempt at character motivation

i also pretty much exclusively play league of legends these days and don't touch japanese games if it can be helped

So since the name of this game is "Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor", is there a chance the sequel could be "Middle Earth: Insert location here"? I'd love for them to explore more of middle earth, minus Mordor. I'd KILL for that game.
Hobbiton/Shire pls

What main character in the last 5 years out of the dozens and dozens and dozens of AAA games was on a quest for revenge for his wife?

This, I love this game but man the environment can be ugly as shit sometimes.

Really fun game. I'd just done a mission, minding my own business, when I run in to a captain. Next thing I know, 3 more have appeared and it's like a pub brawl.

I have it on YouTube, but ShadowPlay didn't capture the audio. :(

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Angmar.

Imagine this game set in the remnants of a great kingdom with Skyrim-like vistas, where you fight both uruks and Hill Men led by the Witch King.

The story gets much better in the 2nd part, when you travel to a new area.

I played this damn game for 6 hours yesterday. It's really addictive.

This. Anyone?

There doesn't seem to be any worthwhile reward for completing the side missions or finding the collectibles.

I finished the Stealth Dagger challenges and it only changed my Dagger cosmetically, and finding all of the artifacts only provided me with some lore. I was hoping for some kind of cool gameplay buff.

Same here, and tbh I'm kind of sad to see, that like Far Cry 3 and Black Flag before it, this game has schyzophrenia between open/systemic and story missions.

So apparently I'm free to roam the world and engage in the nemesis system and captain assassination, BUT I have to progress in the story missions to get the Brand ability (which is like half the fun of the damn nemesis system), and same goes for a lot of other abilities.

So I'm free to explore and play around for however long I want, but if I want to get all the cool toys I also have to THEN, at some point, get around to doing the story stuff. It's especially annoying when they turn out to be heavily cutscene-ified introductions to features I discovered for myself 2 hours ago by, you know, playing in the world :/

Still, love the game, but dammit I long for the day when a big open world game like this has the balls to entirely detach abilities unlock etc from story missions, or at least mixes both in a way that isn't "schyzophrenic". But I guess SoM already had a lot of balls going for itself with the nemesis system and the whole creation of the franchise from the ground up, so maybe in SoM 2 ? :p

I'm pretty much exactly in the same boat right now. I've spent 8 hours decimating captains and warchiefs, and don't have access to branding because I've done minimal story missions. Oh well, I actually sorta enjoy where the story is heading and don't mind progressing to unlock some of the abilities that are locked behind progress in the story.

Weird question, but I'm gonna start the game tonight so I'll go ahead and ask.

My wife doesn't care for video games in the least, but I usually try to get her to watch the first 10 minutes or so of a game when I first start a new one, simply because I want her to have at least a slight clue as to what the game is about, since she's gonna see snippets of me playing it over the next few weeks.

We have a young son and my wife is particularly...sensitive to seeing depictions of violence towards kids these days. I know this might be a hard question to answer, and I realize this is just a game, but would the intro likely be too rough to show her? She's not over the top sensitive, but if the intro is particularly brutal when it comes to anything with children, I'll probably avoid having her see it.

Also, I don't need specific spoilers or anything, maybe just something vague and a "yes, let her watch it" or "heck no, keep her away". Thanks for any opinions.

The opening is brutal. Don't show her.

It's not ultra-graphic, but it is unsettling in terms of the violence being done.

It's not insanely graphic, and the child isn't...really a 'child', he looks like he's in his late teens or early twenties really...

If she's particularly sensitive to violence in any way then I wouldn't...

I can totally see this game evolving into a more open-world experience just like Arkham Asylum shifted into Arkham City, for some reason.
