Mighty No. 9 review thread

Serious Sam 3 was crowdfunded for half a million?
First time I've heard of this

as said in the twitter links I posted, Serious Sam 3's budget wasn't anywhere as low 500k: Basically, what happened is that Croteam was doing a serious millitary simulator, but it was cancelled and they recycled the assets they did that game for SS3. I haven't found any statement from Croteam about SS3's budget either.

Bloodstained does look like it's progressing nicely with its steady release of information when it's ready. We already know what the game actually looks like and backers were even asked for input on what shading/art style they preferred.

It doesn't feel like a scam at all.

Yeah, everything looks good and the one thing they got negative feedback on they seemed to go out of thier way to fix and ask for feedback again on.

It feels like an extension of the Kickstarter where they kept an eye out for people's concerns and addresses them as quickly as possible.

God damn.

Inafune is also the only person I recall in recent memory that immediately started another Crowd Funding Campaign before actually delivering on the first one.

I don't know many other gaming based crowd funding campaigns that started another one before the product from the first one was actually available. This was not the case for Inafune

Hell I'm willing to go so far to say that a significant portion of the $4 Million wasn't entirely put into the development of Mighty No. 9 but instead was also invested partially into Red Ash and the Mn9 Anime. Basically mismanagement of backer funds not wholly going towards the game and instead some of it put into something else the backers weren't even paying for.

Double Fine did this too I think.

Oof...there was a part of me that hoped all the pre-release doom and gloom surrounding this game would clear at launch and a competent game would come out of it. Seems like that is clearly not the case.

Dunno how much I trust the mainstream reviewers when it comes to something like this, but obviously, this doesn't bode particularly well. I'll still give it a shot, though.

Oh, is that why SS3's environment looked so bland in all the trailers?
Explains a lot, actually. I was afraid CroTeam had just lost their touch.

I too think that they funneled backer money into other projects a la Sega/Gearbox.

I wanna see the receipts.gif

Ignoring the devs that have told us that the concept art wasn't totally unreasonable, the "concept art" point totally ignores the test footage.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I didn't expect to go from that to the shit that MN9 looks like now.

So only specially qualified reviewers who are Mega Man experts can write proper reviews for this game? Is this your thinking?

This feels like a Dark Souls 2-tier level downgrade

Is there anything in the documentary about why they went with an entirely different style after this?
I always assumed it was because of the handheld stretch goals, but maybe there were other reasons.

With different teams that weren't working on the same game.

Schafer still took the brunt of that hate, which is kind of understandable since he is the face of Double Fine. I think the bigger issue was that Broken Age bit off more than it could chew with its budget, leading to the game being split in half. It's still a great game, though. That can't really be said about MN9 based on these reviews.

And yet they're still delivering on their promises of DLC campaigns, gender swap, battle mode, etc. AND they're giving me them away for free to non-backers as well.

Yacht Club Games are the absolute best.

I regret not backing that btw. Game turned out great.

No need to take my word for it, it's right there on the pitch.

Sorry if I came off like I doubted you, I didn't follow this game closely until it became the funniest running gag in gaming.

God seeing that with my own eyes is brutal though. They scrapped a basic and advertised feature claiming budget restraints when they got 5 times what they asked for. This is undefendable.

That seemed like the logical reason, but then we got that animated series preview using a near identical art style.

The cynic in me thinks that one had something to do with the other.

I remember a long time ago, people were saying how this game's success will make Capcom reconsider their treatment of Megaman. Hehehe.

To be fair, it did. We got the Legacy Collection and they announced the new animated series some time after.

I remember not that long ago when Inafune was talking mad shit about the Japanese development community. In recent years they have been running circles around his efforts.

Really hope this game bombs hard and combined with Inafune burning bridges he has serious trouble making games again. He needs to prove himself as anyone other than a scam artist at this point. Nobody else deserves to be ripped off.

Same. It was my 2014 GOTY but at least I bought it three times to show my support.

So I guess any and all hope for Capcom making another Mega Man game is gone now?

Id love to watch a documentary on what exactly went down with this games development. I mean you would think a guy who made mega man could you know.. make a mega man. It dosnt help much that the guy also put down Japanese development for a good while. Finally goes out and does his own thing but makes a mess of it.

That actually looks solid, what in the world happened?

I am so glad I reserved myself on this campaign and didn't splurge, just giving the regular pledge.

I did splurge 100+ on Bloodstained though so hopefully that delivers.

I recently finished the MM Legacy Collection and was wanting more, holding out to see how this would turn out. I guess I'll just buy 7 and X1-3 on Wii U.

It's not they didn't have to time to polish this thing. The most amazing aspect I keep reading is that the frame rate isn't stable on console. How is that possible with all the delays!

Those fan comics are so incredibly embarrassing, doubly so now.

Would be curious if we ever find out what truly went wrong here; inti creates seems to be doing good work with Bloodstained for example, so was it truly Inafune mis-management or? Feel bad for everyone that backed this :/.

This game turned out such a disappointment, I feel really bad for all the people that were so excited when the Kickstarter was announced only for this to be the end result.

It's not like Inafune could have gone pixel art to accommodate for the portables ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ leveraging the strength of INTI and stuff.

Why is there any expectation that the game would look identical on every platform?

A kickstarted game for four million?

I mean, I am not defending the decision to do so, but if you're going to put it on 3DS for that budget, it's going to be using that as the baseline. I do not understand why you would expect differently.

Were it me, I would have either not put it on the 3DS or not put it on current gen systems.
