Mighty No. 9 review thread

It is. If they had announced a 3DS port of Bloodstained I'd probably have pulled my pledge. I also agree that it's better to have an external, separate porting project than handling a huge number of platforms in house.

My point was simply that the idea of additional ports -- most crucially, additional ports to relatively limited platforms -- seems to be viewed with a far more balanced perspective in this thread than back during that other discussion. And maybe we can learn something from that for future discussions.

I don't think putting it on 3DS made it a worse game. I think it made it an uglier game.

I did not, and do not, care if Bloodstained is pared down to Wii U and Vita. I did not care that MN9 was pared down to 3DS graphically. It's just a bad game and would have been whether it was PS4 exclusive or not.

We can learn not to repeat the same mistakes again, but at the end of the day most of us (unlike yourself) will always be layman compared to the people actually developing the games and asking for our money and we will have to base a large part of our decision to back them on faith in the developers.

If a person such as Inafune with ~30 years of experience in a field in which I have none tells me something is feasible I'll more often than not take their word for it as would most reasonable people.

It's especially weird because that's not a problem Inti-Creates has had in the past. I wonder if there has been staff turnover or, more likely, they just had insane constraints/too much on their plate due to (I sound like a broken record now) poor management.

This game has always looked like it was made by interns, and at worst 'not actually IntiCreates'. Made all the more obvious by the fact IntiCreates was still making all the stuff they usually do at the usual standard.

well that looks pretty much like castlevania psp which i dont like it one bit...
You must not remember the PSP game well. This game looks way better than the muddy boring polygons on that Rondo remake. Jut take a look at this earlier screenshot from a stage not present on that introductory E3 demo and tell me again Bloodstained looks like the PSP Castlevania.

He recovered from Yaiba, he can recover from anything.
That's not really the same is it? Did he get 4 million dollars in donation drives to make that game? Was that game hyped to the moon when first revealed? Was that game a spiritual successor to one of the most beloved franchises in existence, which his original company basically has declared dead by this point?

Fair enough.

It's true that it is far harder to establish a definitive connection between the non-graphical elements and the target platforms than it is to establish a graphical connection, but there is a significant additional effort involved that might affect the entire project. And in particular, when you are talking about something as limited as 3DS, there might be gameplay-relevant features which need to be dropped or redesigned -- not necessarily because they are impossible to accomplish on the hardware, but maybe because it's not feasible to accomplish them in the budgetary constraints within a multi-platform project. Generally, more (performance) efficient software engineering solutions often also take longer to design and implement.

Anyway, enough about that! Personally, I wish this one would have turned out better, but I'm still going to give it a try tomorrow.

So it looks like retail download codes for this will be available tonight at 9pm. Is there a definite answer on when backer-codes are going out? I filled out the most recent platform survey, but I haven't seen (I could have missed it) a message about when to expect the game.

If retail codes are available before backer codes, I just don't know what to say.

I've been waiting for the reviews to roll in, and I gotta say I'm not the least bit surprised. I think my expectations were met if anything.

As a backer, I'm just going to laugh.

And try and sell my code online.

Amazing just how much goodwill they burned on this game and how much potential they squandered.

Also fair, and this is something that will vary from person to person, but my general feeling is that the type of game MN9 was supposed to be should not have needed more than the 3DS is capable of. Maybe that's myopic in its own way, but I would have been fine if this game looked like the 8-bit side game they released alongside Gunvolt.

For me, the limitations weren't inherent in having the 3DS as a baseline, they existed because the baseline was aiming higher than the 3DS in the first place.

Surely they wouldn't do this, as backers would have a strong argument for asking for a refund.

This is one of the kickstarters I backed that did eventually come out but I have little to no desire to play at this point even after dumping 50 bucks on this turd. Oh well at least Bloodstained is looking decent so far.

There's a great OT title in there.

I'm at the point where I feel as though my $15 went into the spectacle of it all -- This glorious train wreck of a kickstarter, the undoing of Inafune's legacy, the five stages of grief we were all pitted against... And you know what, at the very least it was entertaining.

Seeing a lot of complaints regarding reviewers receiving codes before backers. I didn't really think about it but that's an extremely valid complaint.

I kind of don't want them to give us backers our codes until tomorrow just so i can get a good laugh in. It would be like the icing on the cake for this tragedy...

i wonder when i will get my backer code. forget the quality of the game, thats a risk i have to take when i support a kickstarter project.

but the real fuck-up during this ks campaign/project, is the absolute lack of communication with the backers. everytime the game was delayed, backers found out last. when will backers get their dl codes? nope, nothing. and god knows when my physical rewards will show up (if ever...).

I am in the same boat.

I don't even care about the game that much anymore; I just want what SOMETHING tangible that I can say I blew $60 bucks on, even if it is horrible.

At this point, the next time someone asks what game did you buy and instantly regret, I can honestly say that while I didn't "buy" MN9, I backed it, and the finished product instantly made me regret it.

I mean... look at it. Look at this game. Play it. It's laughable.

This is exactly why I'm opposed to funding games. My condolences to the backers, you deserved much more given how much was funded and how long it took for the game to come out.

Hope Inafune gets major backlash for this. I knew something was up when this guy was announcing Bloodstained last year, without even finishing this project. Absolutely disgusting and repulsive.

Best wishes.

Mistake here

Red Ash will probably be cancel with all the fuzz around MN9 release...I can't believe he continue to work on the other project..

Do you mean that Ash game?

And...welp, win some, lose some, I guess. Although I'll try it before saying it's garbage.

I backed this, Bloodstained, and Battlechasers. The latter two are looking great.

I would have bought this regardless of reviews, because it's in a genre I love and I have to see for myself. Nothing lost for me.

Not even just reviewers they also gave codes to streamers and stuff already. There is already full game playthroughs on youtube already. They made it obvious that they stopped caring about their backers a long time ago when they stopped communicating altogether.

Personally I don't care I'll play it when I get the code and the Kickstarter didn't promise anything early but if the game releases before the backers get it there will be a massive shit storm. It would be nice to pre-load the game like others who pre-order can do now. I decided to check the official forum again and there are some pissed/defeated people on there lol.

I'll always love what Infaune contributed to my personal gaming history from Mega Man to Resident Evil to Dead Rising, but ever since he's left Capcom, he's been a mess. Comcept has yet to produce a single good game and I've lost hope for anything he's attached to in the future.

I like how it's now a foregone conclusion in this thread that the platform stretch goals (and especially the 3DS goal) are at least partly to blame for this falling short of expectations. Not that I disagree, I fully agree.

But when I posted about not really being all that excited for the Bloodstained Vita stretch goal to be reached quite a few posters were very angry -- and seemed to assume it's because I hate their platform (the only handheld I bought at launch!) and not because I want the best possible game to be made.

Lucklily, seems that Bloodstained, isn't as constrained as Mighty 9, due to platfoorms.

I think you're getting your hopes up about backer codes going out tomorrow. Their PR team is silent and the whole thing has been a shit show. In a few weeks we'll get an email apologizing for messing up the survey along with a DRM-free PC code for everyone.

I kind of hope that happens so I can initiate a dispute with my credit card company to try and get my money back.

Inafune doesn't have anything to do with Bloodstained.

Bloodstained is IGA.
It was bad enough when people were conflating other Kickstarted projects with MN9's failings, but now they're actually attributing completely different KS games with Inafune.

What is it about Kickstarter games that makes people completely dive off the rational and logical thought spectrum? It's just a crowdfunding site, it isn't a publisher or a developer where you can attach them to the resulting product's quality.

pretty sure you cant get your money back after 3 years.

Dang, I didn't know entertainers were getting codes too. I guess that's what happens when you start to not care as much as the PR team does.
