Basically...he took a pay day, did enough, could have won the fight...but just quit....he should have just walked out there took a hit and stayed down...

It was pretty obvious that he was still only fighting to pay off his debts. Tyson isn't the most intelligent person on the planet, but I'm sure even he knew he couldn't hack it anymore, and hasn't been able to for quite some time. I don't doubt for a second that his heart simply wasn't in it anymore.

So you think he couldn't have won this fight? I think if he was focused he could have...he went in knowing what he was going to end up doing...

Oh, Tyson definitely could've still won this fight. I just think, like you said, he went in expecting a one-sided affair and immediately decided it wasn't worth it to continue once he started facing any sort of adversity. Total "pay the bills" effort.

tyson vs no-name scrub .. dead even? he's done!

That guy was handpicked by the Tyson's team. So they knew everything about him and Tyson was suppose to knock him off early on and he can't even do that anymore.

My point, the ass could have won the fight if he kept fighting...McBride would have tired out faster than Tyson....he just quit at HIS deadline...

Tyson's Career May Be Over after Latest Loss

By TIM DAHLBERG, AP Boxing Writer
June 11, 2005

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Mike Tyson's career may have ended in shocking fashion Saturday night when he quit on the stool after taking a beating in a foul-filled sixth round against unheralded Kevin McBride.

Tyson lost for the third time in his last four fights, and once again he faded badly as the rounds went on before head butting McBride in a desperate attempt to end the fight in the sixth round.

Tyson was pushed to the canvas when the round ended, his head stuck between the first and second ropes. He got up very slowly, wobbled back to his corner and sat on his stool.

When referee Joe Cortez came by to look at him, his corner told Cortez the fighter could not continue. Cortez then went over and raised McBride's hand in victory.

The 38-year-old Tyson was a huge favorite over McBride and won the early rounds. But as the fight went on, it was McBride landing the bigger punches as Tyson desperately tried to score a knockout.

Tyson was weary by the fifth round and, in the sixth round, he was penalized two points for deliberately head butting McBride and opening a cut over his left eye. The head butt came after Tyson appeared to try to break McBride's arm in a clinch like he once did against Francois Botha and after he hit him with several low blows.

In a career filled with tremendous highs and terrible lows, Tyson may have reached a new low in the loss to McBride, who came into the fight with no credentials.

Wouldn't it be in Mikes interest to knock him out or at least fight to a win so he can at least have a chance at an other 5 mil boxing sham. Now he definitly through. His next match will be in a bowling ring before a Vince Neil concert.

Yah that's what i'm thinking. People put up with his previous antics because he acted crazy. No one is going to pay money to see him quit a match though.

Tyson's on the podium now answering questions. ESPNnews.

This is really sad :(. I feel almost as bad as I did after his last fight those months ago when his eyes just looked completely defeated. I guess it's finally over for him, because I don't think anybody would want to promote his fights after this.

He got knocked out last time and this fight was still huge news. Pathetic as it may be, he's the biggest draw in heavyweight boxing, if not boxing altogether.

Hell, this fight should not have been promoted.

How does Tyson even rate to get money for this.

This fight was not for a championship of any kind and both men rate lowly in the various governing bodies' rankings, so saying "boxing's" credibility is zero is pretty unfair.

The fight was promoted because Tyson sells a lot of pay-per-views, that's all. Even if he won he wouldn't even be in a discussion of the top heavyweights.

Tyson was going to lose and he knew it. He put all his energy into the 4th round and STILL couldn't get it done against a no-name bum and it frustrated the shit out of him. When his arm breaking strategy failed, he just quit. He had no stamina, look how long it took him to get up when McBride pushed him down. For crissakes the guy was pulling an Oliver McCall and crying inbetween rounds. Its really sad, cause Mike is probably my favorite fighter of all time, but he's got nothing left. This must be what it felt like for the children of the 60s to see Muhammed Ali get his ass kicked by Larry Holmes. I have to give Tyson the respect for coming out honestly and just saying he doesn't have a passion for it anymore. That postfight interview was probably the most honest you will ever see an athlete at the end of his career. I really hope he stays true to his word and doesn't come back just to make some money.

If he holds true to his retirement, then sayonara, Iron Mike. You gave us some great (and terrible) memories.

I for one have always had an affection (no homo) for Tyson. I can't stand these people who call him an animal and say he should be in a cage and who pray for his failure. Mike Tyson is a prime example of many of the deficiencies of our society and how we exploit the misfortunate. Tyson was a victim of circumstance, as are many fatherless children born into poverty. No one ever taught him how to act, and the only thing positive he ever had going for him was boxing. The only person who did not try to take advantage of his spectacular gift was Cus D'Amato. Everyone else wanted a piece of him. Give a misguided man millions of dollars, celebrity status, no support system of people he trusts, and surround him by people who prey on him because he's successful (I'm looking at you, Robin Givens), and you expect to get anyone but Mike Tyson??

Tyson, though cursed, is also blessed. I've always seen a good person within him, underneath the phacade he wore to keep people at a distance. Though clearly a manic depressive and prone to mood swings, Tyson, despite his broken education, is a thinking man. Always has been. The substance of his quotes, though the English is occassionally broken, is often profound. He has slowly gained a great understanding of the human condition and how he's perceived and treated by others. Without Cus' guidance, he got caught up in the money and the fame as a young champion, and it took the humbling experience of losing his belt and going to prison to bring him back down to earth. It was only after acquiring a smidge of humility that you began to see a more introspective Tyson that often, through the haze of drugs, meds, and fast living, would actually try and level with the world. And what did the public do? They laughed at him because he often misspoke his words and sounded as though he were trying to be too verbose. They laughed at this man who didn't know how to act, who was struggling to find himself despite being surrounded by snakes and gawkers.

Before this fight, all weigh-in/press conference shennanigans aside (which he actually handled quite well IMO, very funny), I've seen a more grounded Mike Tyson than ever since he reached celebrity. He seemed to finally be at peace with himself and others, and didn't go putting on a charade in order to hype the fight and didn't act a fool out of lingering insecurity. Yeah he talked some trash, but no more than any other fighter, and he did it in good faith with a sense of humor. I haven't seen any of the post-fight stuff, but from reading the impressions, he seems to have come to the end of the road. I hope he continues to develop as a person and that his financial woes don't drag him down. Tyson to me has always been a great person waiting to happen, who was saddled with circumstances that would likely ruin even the best of us. Yet the public judged him from afar as though he were some freak, with little to no sympathy for a man who was not given the chance to succeed as a human being. He has slowly, through his many mistakes and failures, made himself into a better human being all the while still being a fascinating personality. I think Tyson would make a fantastic commentator for HBO/Showtime..he's insightful, funny, and very often comes out of left field with something most people aren't thinking but that is still entirely relevant. Regardless, I hope he succeeds at whatever he does.

Thanks, Mike.

That was a great great response Ned. I've always felt bad that some people would laugh at a quote that has a lot of thought and meaning to it. Like

"I dunno, I'm in a weird world now, you know? I dunno"

Because he said "you know? I dunno". I can see he's realized his world's changed now. Success isn't judged for him by his boxing anymore. It's different for a man who since 18 years old, boxing has been the center of being a winner or a loser. Now he's realized he's playing on a different field. At least I feel he was thinking that from his accumulated responses. He's also extremely honest at times which I admire. I really hope he does get a commentating job or at least finds some recreation/job that he will suceed at. Thanks again for the post Ned.

I don't really understand the love for tyson. To me hes a rapist who can't win fights anymore. and if it's one thing rapists deserve, it's a beating.

It's always hard to watch old legends go out like this. Holyfield losing to Ruiz over and over and getting knocked out by James Toney, and now Tyson just quitting in a fight. Roy Jones losing three hurt too. The old guard is being pushed out and the new guard is coming in. This must be what it felt like when Ali lost to Larry Holmes at the end of his career.

I think most people saw it coming, Mike's career pretty much was over when he lost that fight in the Tokyo Dome back in 1990, one of the greatest boxing matches in history too.

Dsal

it's going to come out of you and it's going to taste so good
Tyson is probably much improved nowadays from the lunatic criminal he was at times before since he's probably finally got enough medication for his mental problems and has a lot of hard lessons to look back to. I hope for his sake he can have a crazy-free life doing something else besides boxing.

And I gotta say, Cus is an awesome name.

Those of you comparing Tyson going out to Ali... un no... watching Ali go out was MUCH, MUCH more painful. Because during his prime at least Ali had the full package... Tyson was only focused while Cus had him... after that... he was never the same.

Tyson's heart isn't in fighting anymore... he's simpy fighting to pay off the huge amount of debt he has... Unfortunately I think he still needs a few more fights before that debt is paid off in ful... and that's the sad part... he no longer has the real hunger... it's just a job now.

The new guard is coming in? Well who the hell is the new guard? Cause all 3 heavyweight champs are bums...

The Tyson-Douglas fight is not even in the realm of "The Greatest Boxing Matches in History" although it is certainly at the top of "The Greatest Boxing Upsets".

It's a shae that Mike has to go out like this. When I see Tyson now, I just think about the wasted opportunity. He was such a great fighter at one point, but seemed to lose the desire to work hard and fight a smart fight. In the glory days, he set up his punches, worked the jab, and had tremendous hand speed to go along with his power. Now, he's just head hunting and looking for a knockout.

His career is probably over, but remember, most people felt the sae way last year when he was knocked out by Danny Williams. I'm not sure we've seen the last of him yet, although it is time for him to hang it up.

Not true. Cus never saw Mike win the Championship. Obviously Cus was instrumental in getting him there, and was the one to provide focus to his life, but things really didn't start to go down hill in the Ring until Kevin Rooney, his trainer, was let go. Don King took over, Tyson brought in some of his old friends, and then things began to really go down hill, as was evident in the Douglas fight.

But you are right, watching Ali was worse. He was even more iconic than Tyson, and had more skills and presense in the Ring. He's called The Greatest for a reason.

I excised the long, touching apology for Tyson.

Mike Tyson is a child, a rapist, an abuser of women, bites ears when he's losing, tries to destroy a man's livelihood (as bad at it as he may be) by trying to break his arm, and a quitter.

He's no one to look up to or admire. He wasn't even that great a fighter.

Correct on all but one. At his peak, Tyson was an EXCELLENT boxer. But like so many boxers, age (and sitting on money) caught up with him.
