Mike Ybarra: “PS5 Pro Is A $350 Upgrade for Trade-In Users”

Gaming is an expensive hobby. It cost money to upgrade from generation to generation in consoles, extra if you do mid-gen upgrades. It costs money to upgrade PCs as well.

For my money, I'd still say trading in a base PS5 for a PS5 Pro is a better value since comparatively it's less expensive to upgrade your console than PC, IMO--mainly because upgrading a PC isn't usually just a case of throwing in a nicer graphics card and calling it a day, but often having to put in other components like a better power supply and more RAM. It gets a lot more costly.

At the same time, these upgrades are optional. There's no need to buy a PS5 Pro if you have a PS5. You won't be left behind and unable to play games. Similarly, on PC you can put off upgrading for a long time and in many cases you don't get "shut out" of games so much as just having to run them at lesser settings than you may care to.

How does this work with 800€? Also, it is only a digital edition. So I don't think that even in the us it will just be a $350 upgrade. You than still need to buy the disc drive.

I really don't get this. If you sell your device and by a PS5 pro, Sony Gaines a customer who bought the used PS5. If a company in between gives you "money" for it, they must find a new customer first before they gain some money. It would be much cheaper for Sony just to sell the pro console for a lower price before they start such deals.
500€ for us european, sony is smoking...

I think I will wait 1-2 years to know if Sony PS is really worth sticking to. Otherwise, I will invest in a decent gaming rig and stick to PC gaming (and maybe Nintendo Switch2).
Can't argue with PC, I mean almost everything get's released on Steam/Epic nowadays. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is another exclusive that soon will be on PC.

I still like consoles even though yeah PS5 is lacking a bit.

Former Blizzard boss says the PS5 Pro is more like a $350 upgrade as it targets existing users who want to trade their base PS5 for the Pro variant.

The business model in this regard is that an existing PS5 owner can trade their console for $350 in places like GameStop. Then, they can pay a further $350 and upgrade to the Pro model, which is easier for most people to stomach.

He said that while this model isn’t for everyone either, it’s the fundamental one that the industry uses. Replying to a comment that stated that the whole scenario still isn’t a good deal, Ybarra said, ‘Good news is no one has to buy it’.

It is only good for people who can afford it and boast that they have the most powerful console in the world. But for the masses out there, the existing PS5 is fine, and they should be happy with it.

Yes, because there are ao many places where you can trade your curent console. There are customers outside of US, just fyi Mike!

Is this guy braindamaged?

No it's fucking not.

The full console is 920 euros in europe and Gamestop (or a private) is not gonna value my ps5 550 euros or even close to that.

I got 300€ for my XSX from GameStop here in Euro land last year when I traded it in for a PS5 - don't think that they'll give us more than that a year later if you want to trade it for a Pro...

So, best case scenario is 800 - 300 from the trade-in meaning you'll need an extra 500€ - and that's without the 120€ disc drive which would bring the whole "deal" up to 620€, 620 for a mid-gen refresh...frankly, it's a joke IMO.

I see people mentioning "brokies",or, that it's a product made for a specific clientele® or, that their GFX card cost them double that, or, that they "could just not buy it®" but I digress, for me personally the value is just not there, we're talking about 620€ AFTER having traded your 500€ (then) console ffs.

I could understand the PlayStation 6 going for 800 to 900 Euros in 2026/2027 but 920 in the year of our lord 2024, for a mid-gen refresh...yeah

This is what having no competition looks like, Sony, unfortunately, is back at it again

Gamestop usually make you pay a new console half the price if you bring the old one, i did that with ps4 to ps4pro and from pro to ps5, i doubt they are gonna value the ps5 400 euros this time...

UK likely won't get a trade in deal since GAME no longer deal in pre-owned hardware and software. There aren't any other outlets to do that kind of thing other than CEX but they won't be doing it since they only work with pre-owned stuff.

Maybe independent stores will do it, but they're a dying breed.

But what would MS have done, you think? They sell their XSX SKU for 500-600 as well. Just as expensive as the PS5 despite not selling nearly as well.

An Series X upgrade would've cost at least 700. The PS5 Pro is just not for you. All games will continue to be playable on PS5, you're only missing some extra eye candy.

Personally I am planning to sit out the PS5 Pro. For 699 euros and a good trade in might've thought about it, but in the end I don't play enough AAA games to justify a graphical upgrade. In the end I would still dislike the AAA formulaic games even if they would've had a higher resolution.

Trade-in for existing PS5 owners and a massive upgrade for PS4 owners. Still feel Europe got shafted, though that's mostly because of our stupid ass tariffs.

Skyline, c'mon man, this "the Pro is just not for you®" shit is getting stale now, this is a console, not a Ferrari where it's out of reach for 99.9% of the population.
Just like you, I can't justify such a price increase for a mid-gen update/refresh brother - that's it, it's not about the money but the money/value ratio, if it was, say, 700 with a drive included I'd actually think about it but at 920 here in Europe ? That's a whole different thing.
Funny thing is, I'm actually the target group for this console, it's just that - again - I don't think that the asking price is good and that Sony is actually taking the piss, I always (and only) buy things that, IMO, offer good value for what they are and do, that doesn't mean that I haven't made mistakes, heck, I splurged 1000+ € for a Samsung S24 Ultra a couple of months back and I'm left disappointed since in my opinion it's not that good of a phone nor does it justify its price, see what I'm trying to say here friend ? 😉

Cheers

I think the PS5 Pro price is fair considering what I stated about the regular PS5, but its just not for Europe. Which is weird as the base PS5 is priced 1:1 with USA, this creates a bigger gap between resell value of a EU PS5 and PS5 Pro.

But the 5 Pro still doesn't seem to be for you, as you don't seem to want to spend the current price on it. The offered value apparently isn't enough to make the move. I'm in that same boat. I likely would've bitten the bullet if this was about 2 years ago, since I was still alone at that time and I also still played the AAA Sony exclusives. But I have different priorities today. For me the urgency isn't there. I skipped the PSVR2 as well. The PS5 Pro EU pricing doesn't help matters, ofcourse.

With phones I got out of this FOMO years ago. I ended up surviving 3 years with the Pixel 4 (one of the worst phones I ever had) and now rocking a Pixel 7 (one of the best) for 2 years without any plan to replace it anytime soon.

To be fair, that's USD$50 less than the PS4 Pro cost brand new, no trade in, at launch. The point to be made here is: Sony's shifting its business model to maximise the profits on its hardware. Things are only going to get more expensive.
This! With Xbox on its way out, PS5 might be the last “cheap” console we had.

Just checked the prices, looks like PS5 DE is 450€ now? So it will be at max 350€ when you try to resell. PS5 Pro is 900€, we are talking about 550€ upgrade cost.

I'm still mad because they didn't include the disc drive in the Pro. I have looking at this way now. A ps5 digital 1tb + wd black ssd 1tb for a total of 2tb is $520. What is the Pro giving us for $180 more?

You literally don’t have to buy either of those….

These comments are so stupid. Digital exists, and the console stands up just fine without the stand.

This is such nonsense. Do you really think longtime PS gamers are going to throw all of their PS4 and PS5 disc games away? We've GOTTA buy the damn disc drive.

Just being honest here but a mid gen upgrade thats optional isn't targeting the average consumer

The average consumer is totally happy on their PS5, heck we still have a ton of people playing on the PS4

This thing is for us enthusiasts and whales, Mike is just out of touch with that part

The problem in that regard is the lack of announcements. Several of us here have been saying Sony needs to reveal its roadmap for 2025. Should have done that before they ever started talking about new hardware. They are making a tough $700 sell even tougher without an enticing games on the horizon. Supposedly that is supposed to be corrected somewhat this month. About damn time.

But no......for anyone who is unsure if they want to stay in the PS ecosystem.....the PS5 Pro is automatic "no" at this point.
they DO have a roadmap for H1 2025 at the very least, tho (lost soul aside, convallaria and death stranding 2). i think people need to get over the fact that sony will not always be publishing the stuff you personally want, as evidenced by GAF's opinions about their lineup this year
not even trying to be a dick or anything, but would you consider a SoP with new smaller (as in the scope of lego horizon or helldivers 2) games announced for 2025, without a new ND or SP reveal, a course correction?

I'm talking about their first party studio titles. I have no idea what is coming in 2025 from them. And no, if I don't like the product someone is selling that isn't a matter that I have to "get over". I can say my piece about it whether anyone else likes it or not. So yeah, I want to know the whole lineup. If the next big Sony first party studio isn't until 2026 then I want to know that as well. This damn near complete silence bullshit from first party studios makes no sense especially, as I said, when they are trying to sell a Pro console now.

Obviously you are fine with it and I have no issue with that. We don't have to see this the same way.

I will not risk the chance of it going into some brokie household
You should build a shrine for it since the OG disc PS5 is the last PlayStation you don't have to activate online to play. After the extinction of mankind that results in the death of the internet the OG PS5 may be the only way alien archeologists can play the new Astro Bot you just released.

The absurd thing is US and Euro prices back then were parity. Today, the currency exchange ratio is the same as 8 years ago at around 0.90 at this time.

Yet, Europeans got jacked up an extra 100 as it's $700 US and 800 Euros. Many other regions got their prices fairly increased with the current exchange rates now. Canada and Aussie prices match the US conversion almost to the dollar.

$700 US is really about $750 after avg tax rates. 800 Euros is straight up tax in. $750 US converts to 680 Euros which would make sense at 700 Euros nicely rounded off. But it's hiked up to 800 some reason.

That was where I was going at the last part. The problem is that those titles barely make up for 50% of SIE's output, meaning that a *roadmap* couldn't necessarily include the stuff you're looking for.
And no, if I don't like the product someone is selling that isn't a matter that I have to "get over". I can say my piece about it whether anyone else likes it or not.
Maybe I could have said it better, I think you can be personally disappointed, it's reasonable, but what I was trying to say is that IF you expect every product to be exactly what you want, and then get mad when that's not the case, then it isn't anyone's fault. MIND YOU, I'm not specifically talking about you here, but the mindset of people in social media as a whole these past 8 months.
My point? Even if you're asking for a roadmap, maybe keep in mind that Sony could very well have a different definition of that (they ALREADY have one in some way). And that they're probably fine with not revealing anything until it's coming in the next 6 months.
This damn near complete silence bullshit from first party studios makes no sense especially
That's honestly a bit hyperbolic when it's just ND, SP and maybe Bend. Pretty much every other studio have already released/revealed a new game this gen, except for Media Molecule, which didn't even start development on its new IP until last year.
I know people mention Cory Barlog's new IP or Bluepoint's game, but then you have to consider that pretty much all of SSM worked on GOWR, and that Sony basically confirmed that Bluepoint isn't really making anything (which makes sense since they're simply a studio made up of artists and engineers).

PS5 gamers in Canada getting hosed. The exchange rate of about 1.35x and GS offering hardly anything for PS5's makes the situation this here:

System $960 (should had been $950 but Sony edged it up $10 extra dollars!)
Drive $100
Stand $40
Total $1,100 (excluding 13% tax (Ontario rate))

GS trade in offer for the standard unit which is the best one: $350. The slim model is only $270 or 300. US gamers seem to be getting $350 US trade in for a system at $700.
