So, I've been playing
Minecraft Cube Life: Island Survival over this weekend. Cube Life, released June 4th, is the first Minecraft like game released for the Wii U. Its available on the eShop for 7.99.
This game has the potential to be a nice little gem for Wii U owners. Combine Minecraft with the island world concept of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and you get a decent description of Cube Life. The world map is divided into an 11x11 grid for a total of 121 areas to explore (of which I assume most have an island). So far Ive found a native village of friendlies and have heard rumours of a skull island and a sunken ship. While theres no random world generation (at least currently) in survival Im liking the idea that each area will appear more natural (no villages grafted onto a mountain).

I like the mapping in this game. There's one for the world and one local map which changes depending which sector your in. Comparing the surroundings to the maps in the above screenshots should give a decent idea of how big the world is. When ever you reach the border of a sector it asks if you'd like to travel to the adjacent sector. One little knock is the long load times. Hopefully that's improved in future updates.
One area Cube Life really trumps vanilla Minecraft is ocean travel. Once you build a raft it becomes easier to travel to other islands. One reason being is it helps you avoid the sharks. Yes, sharks! While not indestructible the raft can take a good amount of damage. Far better than Minecrafts dinky boats. Tapping X or B activates forward and reverse motion respectively. Y and A turns the raft left and right. You are always free to walk around the raft, just point it in the direction you want and let it set sail. Makes it easier to fight off the circling sharks or the attacking eagles.

From what I can tell survival mode appears to be more focused on survival. It's punishing as the days progress. By day five the attacking cannibals can break through dirt and wood blocks. Once day 15 roles around they can even punch through stone. Thanks to what I think is a glitch archers can shoot through blocks so that makes night especially difficult. Until the arrow bug is fixed I'm building my house high up in the air.
In the games current state it does lack a lot of what Minecraft offers. There is no redstone equivalent and there's a lack of blocks like doors, fence gates, stairs and slabs.
I haven't done too much with creative mode. There's no flat world option so that would be a great addition. Before generating the world there's an overhead wold map you can pan through. Think of it as having an entire Minecraft seed to scroll through. When you see a desired land shape within the frame hit generate and that section will load up.
As an $8 single player experience I definitely recommend this game for Wii U owners. There's a bit of a learning curve at the start, especially if you have to unlearn some Minecraft habits and expectations.
