A quick word about Jack "I kick tons of ass" Dempsey. Its Biff's opinion that Dempsey would have been one of the top names from the boxing pool who could have done extremely well in MMA. At first I didn't really know what to think of Dempsey. I thought his Willard fight showcased him as a wild, swinging thug who got by in a somwhat primative era of boxing. Since then, my opinion of him has pretty much done a 180 and I consider him one of the finer, more unorthodx technicians in boxing history.
Him and Larry Holmes wrote the best "how to" I've ever read when it comes to boxing. As for his wild swinging in the Willard fight, it really isn't. If you look you'll see Jack punches all the way from the heels, and he could wind up like that because Willard (who I believe is underrated) was defenseless. Reading Jack's history and know how on fighting is pretty remarkable. He was a slugger/swarmer like Marciano and Frazier, but unlike them he was known to be an incredibly fast starter (Jack's own account is that he had 60 1st round KO's, some bare knuckle). When I think of great fighters specialties, I think Louis had the best finishing ability, Marciano the greatest determination, Ali the most athletecism, but Dempsey was the best opener.
I remember reading his talk about the difference between a real fight and a boxing match. His description of the "real" sounded very much like what we see in Pride nowadays. For me, its safe to say he would have done very well in any type of format. The man was nasty.
