I saw Bas in his prime in Pancrase. He was pretty great as a striker and had decent enough ground defense to avoid getting subbed by most people towards the end of his run.

If you're talking about modern day (closed fist) MMA rules, though, he's really only had 2 or 3 fights and didn't look like a worldbeater in them. Especially when you consider SEG was pushing him as the greatest martial artist in the world.

Yeah because the internet replaces all human interaction!

This ain't your love life fucker.

Evil, how long have you followed MMA?

Bas released a compilation set of all his MMA fights with self-commentary. It's very interesting, and you can see him learn from his mistakes one fight at a time and progressing from a pure striker to a well-rounded MMA fighter.

His takedown defense was comically bad for his entire career (a "bas getting taken down" drinking game would be lethal), but because of that he became quite good at submission grappling. And no one wanted to stand with him.

Here's the set:

I've followed MMA since 2004. The first MMA I saw was UFC 1-4 on DVD in 2002, but I actually thought it looked kind of offensive at the time (basically presented to me as, "hey look at this, people beating each other to death, isn't it awesome?"). Eventually when I was looking to change my life and pursue martial arts I started learning about what MMA was really about, and I eventually became a big fan of Pride FC, then the UFC and all the other promotions. I trained BJJ from 2005-2006 and 2010-current.

Rutten was the shit, he was the first really scary P4P type guy, once he rounded out his game to get submissions down he was pretty much unstoppable.

I'm not the most naturally athletic person in the world and I get injured frequently doing BJJ.
I actually meant to ask people in the thread about this. I started BJJ fairly recently and was wondering, whats the level of banged up I should be feeling after a class? Had a class on wednesday and we were doing guard passing. Came out the class limping from my hip and thigh hurting and my arm is now bruised and my neck/shoulder as well as my wrist hurt if I move them in a certain way.

Jones stand up is a bit too "parkour" to go bang with Shogun. Jones has nothing to loose at all in this fight. I just find it odd that people are writing Shogun off because Jones beat Ryan Bader...RYAN FN BADER. Come on people.

I disagree with that, he definitely has something to lose, for example: His aura of invincibility, his hype, his unbeatable status. He's the favorite as well, of course he has something to lose.

If this is one of your first few classes then it's ok for your body to be hurting, except for the wrist hurting when you move it a certain way, that sounds like you may have strained something there.

Well, it'll be a loss, but everyone loses eventually. People will excuse him for being young and inexperienced. Even if he gets KO'ed in rd 1, as long as he does well in his fights after that, he'll be right back on top. No one cares that GSP lost to Hughes the first time.

Cool, I figured it was just that but wanted to check with others what their experiences were.

Bas in his prime was damn good. He had some weaknesses as other have put out, but the thing that he had, versus many but not all, was that he really thought through his mistakes. He also had a pretty good if not great chin on him but as others stated his closed fists fight are not remarkable. In a couple interviews he does talk about that and why he things that was.

But I would say this, for his time, he was fucking awesome. Brutal, strong, a pretty good sense of sportmanship and entertaining as hell to watch. I saw him live and despite having seen big names of all sports live, Tyson, 4 UFC's, and Bas beats them all. Though I admit I saw Tyson when he wasn't really being challenged and was just ruining people. It was still fucking sweet but Bas was cooler.

Pretty normal. Remember a good deal of BJJ is going to involve some shit that the normal body doesn't prepare you for, with aches and pains in places that aren't normal, even in other martial arts. Well, each is different in some ways obviously. But what your talking about sounds somewhat normal. Make sure you stretch out during the normal day, even on days you don't work out. Get some stretches and exercised that increase that flexibility and increase it. If you notice aches and pains that Do Not go away. Talk to some of the others at the dojo, school, whatever, and find out if they have experience in it.

Not the same but after my first muay thai class i couldnt walk straight for a week. T__T
3 classes so far.

The awesome thing about training martial arts its that your body is put to the test.
Keep it up bud and good luck!

Hopefully my health gets better so i can continue doing Muay Thai
EDIT: Sorry for my english.

If you're just starting BJJ, you really gotta swallow your manhood and make sure everyone knows to take it easy on you when you roll. Letting everyone know what parts of you are sore goes a long way too.

Thanks, like I said I thought it was normal but just wanted to check. The classes have been a lot of fun so far, in particular really enjoyed drilling transitioning between/defending armbars, triangles and omoplatas. Also noticed how everyone seems really nice and willing to help each other out. Btw Fersis, your english is great. No need to apologise for it.

Most dojo's and schools are like this, and less than Kobra ki from karate kid:)

I really like to hear that. I know that I would never have continued if everyone was a stone cold ass. Actually I quit the first 2 dojo's that I joined due to complete ass instructors and then 12 years later took their places after being hired because they had lost so many students. Ass teacher or classmates suck.

I've just gotten back to BJJ for the past 3 months after taking a year off due to injury + career stuff. Though I've been training BJJ since 2003, and martial arts since '97, it's still been tough to get back into the swing of things. It's been one of my true regrets that my martial arts training has had to take a backseat to my career these past 3 years. People I used to train with and wipe the floor with are now purple belts, while I'm a rusty blue...

Doesn't matter how much general cardio and weight training you do (and I've done a lot in the interim), I firmly believe nothing compares to putting your body through good martial arts training.

I'm finally feeling that I'm getting back to speed in my ground game and feeling like a badass again, haha.

and if you can learn to genuinely love the pain you feel the morning after a BJJ or Muay Thai class, that's when you know that you're meant for the martial arts. ;)

and, while we're declaring our MMA-watching bona fides, I've been an MMA geek since 2002, myself

You're a true old hand, dream.

I didn't get into it until my karate sensei fought in Quebec's old UCC.

Brownie points for those who can guess who that was. ;)

I got the MMA bug in 1994, but I wasn't able to follow it super closely through the years. I basically had to rent the UFC's from Blockbuster when I could. Kinda stopped watching during college, was just too damn busy juggling school, a job and a crazy girlfriend. Picked up again around 2005.

Thompkins?

The hard ol' times were the pre- and just-post-NeoGAF threads, where MMA threads were lucky to break twenty replies, and hitting page 2 was unheard of.

And now we regularly crack a thousand replies. Brings a tear to m' eye. ;(

Congrats, you win a cookie. :)

aside: His fighting record may be a dismal 0-4, but in those days, his training consisted of training with three other karate guys in my dojo. He had zero wrestling or BJJ training, and watching him "roll" on the ground at the time was like watching a fish flop around on land.

Once he became a trainer, he picked up skills, and was a beast to train with. I firmly believe that if he had had the proper training opportunities back in the day, he would have been a respectable fighter himself.

It's not always a good thing though. Royce testing positive for steroids was my version of finding out Santa didn't exist...

Karate sensei...Rush?

Apparently Rampage is fighting Hamill now, instead of Rashad or Thiago... My interest plummeted even further upon hearing this. I had no problems with Black on Black Crime 2, but Hamill should not be part of a co-main event. Any of the other fights on the main card are more compelling, such as Mir Nelson or Wand Stann.

Haha, I saw UFC 1 with my friends on ppv also. Then I rented vhs tapes for the next few. But I took a long break from late 90s till I started watching Pride videos online sometime in mid-2000s. And then the Ultimate Fighter and Spike got me back into the UFC, and I was hooked. Watched everything I could find via online or rentals.

Oh, of course I'm from Hawaii so the Inoue brothers and then BJ were household names from way back. The local news would always show highlights when they fought. Went to a couple Superbrawls, but at the time I didn't follow so didn't know anyone who was fighting.

I'd rather it be Hamil than Rashad.

I guess I can understand them not doing Rampage/Rashad 2 as a co main event. Its too big a fight to be a main event, the last one got over a million PPV buys. They will no doubt do it soon though, unless Rashad does change weight classes.

Fedor's twitter (in russian but you can get a decent idea what he is saying by putting it through a translator)

Page finally getting an easy fight. Which probably means he won't train hard for it..

Ha ditto. I still have vcr tapes of the first few UFCs. The bad ol days of Paul Varleans, Keith Hackney, Tank Abbott, Kimo, Oleg Taktarov, Royce Gracie, etc. No rounds or time limits. And to think when I saw UFC come back around in 2006 or so that I didn't want to watch it because I thought it was pussy shit compared to the old days where there were no rules. Little did I know then that UFC now >>>>>>>x10000 cave man UFC.

EDIT: And about the black box thing .. I still remember watching The River Wild on PPV with that thing and thinking it was the greatest device ever created.

The funniest part is where he fights the guy who keep saying Bas hit him in the balls (which he didn't) until he gets pissed and goes for the liver shot. Repeatedly.

I hear ya, my friends and I discovered UFC 1 when they put it next to Faces of Death in the banned from television section of our local video store. I know I don't post a lot in here but I read this thread daily haha.

Oh man, I loved Keith Hackney. You could see his growth as a fighter throughout the few events he fought in. And what he did to Joe Son is just the stuff of legend. I was always salty about the fact that he never won a tournament.

I still can't believe the sport has gone from having to pack up the cage and throwing all the fighters on a bus in the middle of the night to secretly cross the border to Montreal just to put on an event (where everyone ended up getting arrested afterwards) to selling out Skydome in like a day.

Yep, love him or hate him the fucker had that shit dialed in. He could perform it "almost" at will and some of them were fucking brutal just soul crushing kicks that made the other fighter want to become a sperm all over again so they could impregnate the egg and grow up to be ANYTHING other than a person who fought B.R. again.
