MLB 2014-2015 Offseason |OT| Playoff Dreaming

At the end of the day the point of any internet forum is a place to express oneself freely, and have fun.

If it's not fun people will stop showing up.

I think 4chan -- or, better yet, 2chan -- is an example of what happens if you really place very little limitation on people's ability to "express themselves freely" and "have fun."

I don't mean you can't enjoy 4chan; if you do, by all means. But there's a pretty clear reason why rules exist and why most forums (be they tiny specialist sites or mid sized forums like AV forums or large forums like NeoGAF or enormously huge ones like Reddit) don't allow you to say absolutely anything you want.

I post in here to talk about the heathens that don't like Ketchup, and occasionally baseball.

Oh and Persona, lots of Persona.

Hah, 2Chan, now that brings back memories from 2007-09. Honestly /b/ isn't even 1/100th as bad as it used to be, it's mostly just reddit and tumblr rejects at this point. :p Seriously though never go to 2chan.

Are you happy that this forum is blissfully free of pedophilic Persona porn? Or would you prefer that people be allowed to express themselves freely and have fun?

I do hope you realize that my advocating of having fun means that I support a rule structure (I'm a global mod on a pretty large, niche-ish game site) being in place right?

Threatening people and not being inclusive because you set up an in crowd doesn't foster fun it fosters animosity. The opposite of fun.

I'm not arguing with you I was attempting to agree with your sentiment.

I see, I'm sorry I was confused. Yes, I agree with your position.

The conflicts arise when my "fun" and "expression" negatively affects someone else's fun. Classic example: it's fun for some guys to hit on girls and cat call them. That negatively affects the girls' experience, though.

So yes, we agree.

It goes along with being hostile to outsiders. There was an "in group" inside the NBA GAF thread that consisted of regular posters in their thread.

Being a regular poster is not in itself bad, but it's bad when your "in group" develops its own rule set and becomes hostile to those they perceive as not part of their "in group." In turn, they become protective of those they see as their "brothers" and will stick up for them even to moderators, and even when those "brothers" are clearly being obnoxious or racist or whatever.

For instance, I permanently banned a prominent member of NHL GAF a couple of years ago for multiple, clear violations of our rules. When I did so, another member of NHL GAF sent me a PM and threatened me physically, suggesting he can easily figure out where I live.

That's the sort of attitude I'm talking about, although it's rarely that extreme. We don't look kindly on fraternal orders that stick up for each other no matter what or who denigrate perceived outsiders to their little club.

One of the few threads in here that I was afraid to post to [I think never did]. I was always lurking around. Wrestling Thread also made me stop posting there.

I don't know whether to look forward to this season, as has been the case over the last few years, or try not to do so. The Jays have some great players, but not a team, I feel. And I'm sick of being disappointed.

I also don't want to get excited, watch a ton of baseball in two months, then be bored for the rest of the season.

As I've said before, though, I'm more of a Jays fan than an MLB fan. I watch my team, but that's about it. Even they play far too many drawn out games. It eventually becomes a waste of time to watch.

I was on a Padres team forum the other day and they were amazed at how much our payroll has gone up.

Hint: the Padres payroll is less than $100m

Red Sox scout Gary Hughes has been in baseball for the last 49 years, but this spring was the first time he has ever been booed in church.

Hughes attends Resurrection Catholic Community in Aptos, a town in northern California where the parish priest, Father Ron Shirley, was keenly aware that Hughes worked for the Sox. It became a sore point for Father Ron when he heard that the Sox had targeted Pablo Sandoval, a beloved figure among fans of the San Francisco Giants.

“I think you need to go to confession,’’ Father Ron told Hughes on one occasion. “You’re trying to steal something.’’

That was before Sandoval signed with the Sox. Then on Ash Wednesday, Hughes was attending mass there when Father Ron, during the service, informed the congregation that Hughes was present and it was his fault that Sandoval had signed with the Sox. The priest was stretching the truth a bit -- the decision to pursue Sandoval occurred well above Hughes’s pay grade- -- but that distinction was lost on the parishioners.

“They booed me,’’ Hughes said Friday. “During the mass.’’

With one exception. “One little kid turned around and whispered to me,’’ Hughes said, “’I’m a Red Sox fan.’’’

Lest you get the wrong idea, Hughes loves Father Ron, who at one time served as the offensive coordinator for a high school football team.

With the hiring of Gabe Kapler during the offseason, the Dodgers have gone the organic route. Already spreading his seed into the organization.

http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/dodger-report/post/_/id/13175/dodgers-going-organic-this-season

The Dodgers are making a major effort to encourage their players to eat healthily. New team president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and farm director Gabe Kapler -- who has a blog in which he extols the virtues of healthy living -- have had clubbies pull the usual assortment of junk food out of the clubhouse and brought in a healthy catering company to make the meals.

“We are the healthiest team in pro sports,” was written across the top of the menu at Camelback Ranch Thursday. That day’s lunch was organic seared pork chops, free-range herb seared chicken, organic baked potatoes and organic sautéed asparagus. Not exactly low-calorie, but fortifying and low on toxins.
“Gabe is ferocious with everything he does, so he will make it work,” Kasten said. “I brought a packet of white sugar from Starbucks the other day. If you say, ‘White sugar,’ he goes off the rails.”

Saunders could be back by April? Hopefully he lasts a month before getting injured again so the Jays can go on another tear in May
only to disappoint in the end

edit: apparently the shorter time-frame is because he opted for a different type of surgery which might lead to complications later in life. damn. :(

Glad to hear he could be back soon. Not so much about the other part, obviously.

Maybe it wasn't the best decision.

He's on slaent now with the rest of nba gaf and soccer gaf.

So if mlb gaf ever gets nba-gaf'd, we'll have a new home to go to.

never happen to us. we too good.

Wow.

I never posted in NHL GAF back then but thankfully everyone there seems to be pretty cool nowadays.

So intrigued by our Starting Pitching this year, especially the 'top 3' guys. Legitimately curious to see if Kluber can repeat his ridiculous season, if Carrasco has it all figured out (which it looked like he did 2nd half of the season and was arguably one of the best pitchers in the AL last 2 months) and if Bauer can build on his first full season which was pretty solid.

Really high on Carrasco, though.

I hope MLB-gaf doesn't get banned :( I just want a place to come and laugh at how terrible the Mariners are with how good they should be.

PLAYOFFS this year baby!

To be fair, that wasn't tribalism. There was nothing fraternal there. Both accounts were the same person. And he has other active accounts as we speak.

He certainly wasn't the only "person" to defend the situation, unfortunately. It's probably best if you not try to defend the behavior.

I'd also advise flaunting people's alternate accounts. Unless you were planning on telling us, as you are quite aware it's against the ToS?

In fact, I'm pretty sure every supposed Dodger's fan is just an alt of yours, as you need to prop up the enemy team to provide you with a strawman to punch.

Better ban them all, just to be safe. Thanks for being honest, Corran.

Do you like Sox fans?

I had one person say "The only team I hate more than the Red Sox is the Yankees" I said "Cool we can still be friends" lol. #hatetheyankees
