I disagree, the entire point of the slide is to mess up the double play and get the runner safe at first. The infielder who setup the play is at fault, not the runner. The thrower shouldn't be running 10 feet away from the bag either to make the throw.

Don't try and turn the DP/don't play INF, if you are worried about getting taken from underneath. Tag the bag and take the 1 out. It's part of the game.

Like you said, it's totally legal, and if MLB wants to correct what some people (wrongly) are calling bad intentions, then they need to fix the rule of "in the area" for INF. Obviously MLB thinks its fine because its been around forever.

Fuck that noise.

It's the fault of the runner. Interrupting the double play is one thing. Sliding at someone with your legs at knee level is another. What the fuck is the point of kicking your leg in the air while sliding at someone? You're afraid he's going to jump over a normal slide and make an all arm throw to be the runner to first while fucking airborn? And we're talking about someone with a history of wrecking people's knees.

Sliding to take a guy out is one thing. Going right after a guy's knees is another.

Going low, hard to argue bad intentions. Going at the knees? Has bad intention written all over it.

So, how exactly do you know what his true intentions were?

The Japan Baseball Weekly guys interviewed him a month or so ago and he said he couldn't get a single interview for any coaching position in the states.

I remember John Schuerholz was completely ridiculed by every sports outlet when he signed Franco (whose age nobody knew at the time becasue he wouldn't tell anybody) to the Braves in 2001. Then Franco hit something like .300 and kicked everyone's ass.

Since we're talking about the end of his MLB career, Iwamura hasn't given up on baseball:

@YakyuNightOwl
Speaking of Akinori Iwamura, the player-manager is leading @fukushimaHOPES in the Baseball Challenge League playoffs.

Dude was so much fun to watch. You never forget that batting stance after you see it. Sounds like he's having fun teaching players now, plus his team has a female starting pitcher, picked up her first professional win this year. It was interesting hearing him talk about having to put his instinct to worry about her getting hurt behind him and just tell her to go out and play.

Disgusting slide by that Cubs player. If the Pirates bean him in the head the next time they play, are the people defending that slide also going to defend that?

Was the runner outside the base path? No? Then its not his fault.

A "history" means more than once. Its happened once before. Its part of the game, and has been for 100 years, talk to the commish and the rules committee. with your anger.

When it starts messing with outs and games like the home plate bullshit did for a year, you'll be complaining for that too. Its part of the game, Pirates will throw at him/one of the stars next time they play, and we'll all move on.

Because all runners intentions are to bust up the double play in that play, Cog made an awkward slide he's known for that with or without a fielder near him, the contact is legal and in the base path Cog could still touch second with his hand. If the fielder was outside the base path and Cog couldn't touch the bag, ill give you bad intentions, still legal tho.

Protect yourself as a fielder, theres videos of other fielders getting destroyed on slides like this, he protects himself by jumping. Its not like a blind side hit in football. Cog is directly in front of him the entire play and the fielder should know hes coming to second sliding for a DP.

I'm a Cubs fan, and have no personal like of Cog, but the only people complaining so far are Pirates fans and Cardinal fans. If this happened against the Dodgers, the Pirate fans wouldnt care, and the Cards fans would still whine.

Um, no, lots of people above you in this thread who aren't Pirates or Cardinals fans just posted saying how terrible the slide was. I do however only see Cubs fans defending it.

Did you actually watch the slide yet? Because I can't believe you did based on these comments.

Tell me you are just speculating. Please.

Nope. Confirmed, out for the year and since it happened now, probably April next year if not longer. The bone he fractured is the primary load bearing bone on that part of the leg, depending on the severity he may be able to be back by ST.

Why would Cards fans be predisposed to whine about this? Your boy just took out someone who has had our number all year, he did the Cards a favor.

I suspect there will be zero disciplinary action for the slide. The runner doesn't have to go for the bag and has every right to try and break up the DP as long as he's arms length away from the bag.

Unfortunate and terrible injury, but you gotta get away from the bag. You plant in front of the runner and this is going to happen.

Perhaps injuries like this will prompt a rule change. They protect catchers with the Posey rule, but even in that case it's still the fielder's responsibility to provide a slide path.
