$20m a year for a 1 WAR 36 year old player who's also a defensive liability is a bit of an overpay to say the least. But, rock on.

BJs have to be betting that last year was an aberration and not the start of a steep decline....for a 36 year old that seems like a dumb bet but only 2 years is far from a crippling contract even if Joey sucks.

The Rangers have re-signed Josh Hamilton to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training.
Hamilton is making $28.41 million in 2017, the final year of a 5-year, $125 million deal he originally signed with the Angels before the 2013 season. The Angels are paying Hamilton $26.41 million while the Rangers are paying him $2 million.

He doesn't look all that different. Besides, his problem is that injuries have sapped all of his athleticism. I doubt losing weight will stop him from running like a mule.

So Bautista signs a one year deal, with a "mutual" year two option. What's the point of the mutual option? Most likely, someone will be unhappy with the situation after year 1. Anyone know of any other deals structured with mutual options?
