MLB Offseason '13-'14 |OT| Where the best fans live

I wonder if the various teams in the league would want the Yankees to not go into the luxury tax...a lot of teams (or at least their rich and cheap owners) count on that revenue sharing and those tax penalties every year, so all of a sudden if the Yankees did austerity and avoided luxury/repeater taxes you figure some pockets would get noticeably lighter.

Loria is thrilled. He's been looking at a new Yacht on someone's dime.

The Pirates would never be able to survive.

Cubs were used for leverage! Disappointed but not like he would have made the team a winner this year anyway. For those who still think the Cubs are going to be bad forever, take a look at that revamped farm system. In 3 years Theo and Jed have ranked it up to the second best farm system in baseball. Going to start paying dividends in a year or two.

Tanaka is no ace.

Cubs dodged a bad contract, then! Hoping he would be as good as Yu Darvish.

Tanaka should have came to the cubs. Cubs will contend in another year or two, and by then he would have been comfortable here. would have worked out perfectly.

Fucking yankees. I dont blame them for the money, because cubs were going to fork over that much too it appears. He just wanted to contend..but he made the wrong choice. But still.. so sick of them

Thats an insane contract for never throwing a pitch in MLB. I think he'll be good, but the risk is just too large for such a commitment.

Tanaka is pretty much Hiromi Kuroda though from what I've seen. Fastball-splitter, other pitches suck. No gyroball. Once Otani learns a third pitch, look out.

No salary cap needed. Chance he fails. I think there should be a salary floor or requirement that owners use money obtained from revenue sharing for on field talent.

So Yankees look like this, in theory:

Sabathia/Kuroda/Tanaka/Nova/Pineda SP (Warren/Phelps/Nuno, and Banuelos/Campos trying to break in)

Ellsbury CF
Jeter SS
Beltran RF
Mccann C
Teixeira 1B
Soriano DH
Johnson 3B
Roberts 2B
Gardner LF

On some days, figure DH has to rotate with Jeter/Tex/Beltran/McCann. Soriano can hide in LF on some days. Ichiro is 4th OF. Cervelli and Romine can back up for a game or two a week. Brendan Ryan is Jeter's caddy probably after every 7th inning. The Yankees will still need to find something to do about 2B and 3B (and possibly SS); I guess that's still Eduardo Nunez' backup/super utility job to do for now.

The pen looks like this:
Robertson CL, Kelley/Claiborne/Thornton SU, Cabral/Huff/Betances RP. Probably someone will break into this group (or get demoted to this group). There is still work to be done here too.

Hopefully the Yankees will find a way to improve their infield depth and their bullpen...then, they might actually have a puncher's chance in a season where they lost probably their next HOF player in Cano.

The Luxury Tax was supposed to work as a "cap". Obviously we've seen how that works out. Baseball will never see a hard cap.
Hopefully the next commish gets a backbone and a pair of testicles. This is getting way out of hand. Salary cap now, salary floor now, and if the Yankees need to get the message the hard way, so be it.

Holy shit that's a big ass contract, but screw it, it's not my money. Not to get some bullpen and infield help.

Knicks Yankees are back!

I think if one was to be implemented, it should had been done right when FA started. I think too much time has passed, and too much power has gone to the union's hands for it to ever happen.

As much as I hate to admit it, MLB flourishes when teams like the Yankees/Dodgers/Red Sox, and soon the Cubs compete.

Yeah a salary cap and floor would be amazing. Sucks that MLB is the only sport without a cap.

Matt Holliday: I welcome Peralta as a teammate. he served his suspension, and did not shy away from what he was suspended for. But us players who are not using want harsher penalties for those who are found guilty of PED use.

Boy, our SS is going to fit in great!

Yup - Kuroda and Tanaka are now the only hope for the Yankees. Their offense is full of promises tired with dental floss. I would have been way more interested to see the guy in the NL central too but at least I was right that he would never pitch for the Dodgers.

It's a massive contract but if they wanted him they had no choice but to go that high. The new posting system did wonders for Tanaka.

If he matches those Dan Haren comparisons he would be worth it.

Yankees would be smart to just go full board now that they've gone over 189 million.

They need another bullpen arm and I hope they get Balfour. They may look to Drew if his price comes down even though they said they would not. With A-Rod out and 189 gone he might become an option.

salary cap would be worse for baseball. i dont understand why poeople cant see that a salary cap only puts more money in the owners pockets. pay the players, they are the ones brningin in the money.

i dont go to a yankee game to watch cashman sit on his phone. i go for the product on the field.

everything i read said he compares more favorably to schilling. which i would happily take even though i hate him.

He has 3 pitches that grade out at 60 or better. so i think he will be fine.

Apparently this offseason the Yankees have spent a total of $491 million dollars in contracts.

yeah after the braves are forced to trade away or not sign every player on the team.

Yeah, in 2028.
I'm so sorry guys. You guys can jump on the Yankees bandwagon, all lifelongs are welcomed.

Anthony McCarron ‏@AnthonyMcCarron 2m I'm told the great Hideki Matsui made a recruiting pitch to Tanaka, extolling the virtues of pinstripes.
I knew Matsui's porn collection would come in handy.
