It's what I get for trying to make a joke. If anyone ever wondered why I seem so stoic on GAF, this is why.

My humor is dry and sardonic even in real life; I can understand why it would be imperceptible over the internet when lacking tone. Still, I gave him the chance to pull back, and he chose not to.

He'll be back.
You should never make a joke again.

dmncby2k9 McHugh is a bum, lacks an out pitch. I was checking out ---

MLB-GAF is about as saber-friendly, sober, and light-hearted as it's going to get for a semi-random collection of baseball fans on a message board.

I kept reading this as "sober friendly" and I was like...yeah, I don't like the drug threads either!

Right, tribalism. That's fine. I don't enjoy that and don't care about it, but you can and that's fine.

It can very much be reduced to numbers with a significant degree of accuracy, and is essentially a random number generator. It is not significantly more than that. This doesn't make it not fun! Statistics are really neat.

I've always said baseball is more of a stats thing. Helps one appreciate the consistency the greats dispay when it comes to having the odds on their side.

So,

If McCutchen goes 0-4 tonight and Marte goes at least 0-2. We'll have 0 players above .200 batting average. Assuming the others dont have multi hit games

Strasburg v. Cueto for the rubber game of the series. Best pitching matchup of the season so far?
Surely we've had better? Opening day should have had some really good ones. I mean, it's definitely a good matchup. I guess it depends how much you like Cueto.

THIS. The only thing that really baffles me about your perspective on baseball, Opiate, is your apparent mild surprise at encountering so much inherent "tribalism" on sports-GAF, as if it weren't a deeply fundamental part of nearly all sports and sports fans, period. It sounds like you have considerably less interest in the "romance" of baseball than even most of the people who invented, advanced and popularized rational, stat-based analysis of the sport (Bill James, etc.). I'm not saying you're unique, but your near-total enjoyment of baseball as a random number generator is an extreme outlier in sports fandom. It's totally fine to enjoy it however you enjoy it--and you sure as hell know what you're talking about in this regard--but I'm just surprised you haven't felt this disconnect in literally every sports conversation you've ever had, unless you just don't talk about sports in real life much.

Pretty much this.

Honestly, the only one that's probably been better is Cain vs. Kershaw on opening day. Otherwise, there hasn't been too many great matchups.

Well, no, I think there have been a few great ones, but I see guys like Stras and Kershaw and Cain as being on a higher tier. Compared to Stras-Cueto or Kersh-Cain, you're not going to get any better than that by default.

Speaking of pitching porn, Jose Fernandez makes his debut today!

Yeah, I just went back and checked and I think you're right. Actually, Verlander vs Sabathia as well (there was no reason think C.C. was going to be awful, was there?). Shields vs Sale also stands out... Sale is really fucking good. But Kershaw vs. Cain is the only one that's definitely better, I think. Weird how many teams' number ones are people I wouldn't consider aces.

Can't wait for Eznark to go apeshit crazy.

Why would I go apeshit crazy? Did you see my predictions? I expect them to finish 4th in the division. If they finish behind the Cubs it's not like its some terrible disappointment.

I have no clue who you are or who you root for but I'm glad I can make you happy!

Gonna suck that Fernandez will always have oon his resume: lost debut to Aaron fucking Laffey.

I am not looking forward to facing him today for some reason. Maybe it's because Laffey, or it's because it just seems like the Mets aren't very successful in recent years against young, inexperienced stud pitchers. Hopefully the Mets will threaten him enough to shake him up a bit and cause him to make a mistake.

So to the shock of nobody, Cubs have announced Carlos Marmol is no longer the closer and the save chances for the immediate future will be going to Kyuji Fujikawa.

That didn't take long.

Dale Sveum took a week longer than every other baseball observer to realize he was making a huge mistake.

Vancouver would be a better choice than Montreal. The Quebecois give zero shits about baseball.

Don't think Vancouver would do any better. The only thing that matters here is the Canucks. Most people don't even know the basic rules of the game...

Move the Mets to Tampa.

Make the Cyclones the NY NL MLB team.

Move the Rays to Montreal and get the Expos history from Montreal.

Everyone wins!

In that scenario Tampa Bay still has a team in the end though.

They gave more shits than some fan bases. 1994 World Championship banner. Vancouver has the Mariners anyway.

Rays arent going anywhere lol

The Rays are the most-watched pro sports team on television in Florida. “I think last year, in Tampa, we had the eighth-best TV ratings in baseball.

http://espn.go.com/blog/playbook/fandom/post/_/id/20245/catching-some-rays-in-tampa-bay

Article from March of this year talking about the Rays tv numbers

The problem is that nobody wants to go to the Trop because the stadium is in the worst possible location and is falling apart as well.

Shame that Loria had to pull that stadium nonsense with the Marlins and essentially ruin the possibility of any public financed stadium for the rest of the state.

Move the Dodgers back to NY

Move the Rays to Montreal

Move the Marlins to LA

Florida gets no team like they deserve, LA gets Loria like it deserves, Montreal gets a good team and the Dodgers get to be back in NY.

As awesome as it would be to have a team in Montreal -- I'm in Ottawa, so we haven't had pro baseball here in a few years, and Montreal is close enough that I could at least go to some games -- I just can't root for another city to lose its team. The Rays may not have many fans, but the people who do go are obviously diehards, and it would suck for them to have their team taken away.

In other words, expansion would be awesome, and it would do away with year-round interleague! (Though the downside is that the Montreal team would be NL, and I'm not sure I could deal with year-round DH-less baseball.)

Leading the AL in homeruns as a team with Bautista out for 2 of those games.

Bit worrisome that they havent been able to manufacture any runs without the longball though.
