MMA-GAF | Interim Thread 7

That's why i mainly just watch and don't participate in much discussion.

Wow, great EBI tourney. That last OT was so close.

The combat bjj was cool too but after the first fight I kinda forgot it was any different from regular sub only. Hardly any strikes thrown, in fact i don't know if the final match had any.

EBI Tournaments are always great.

If you get a chance, check out Eddie Bravo vs Royler Gracie 2. Fantastic grappling match between two old veterans.

"GSP doesn't want to fight" - before the Bisping/GSP presser
"Mighty Mouse isn't a draw" - before his upcoming record breaking title defense
"Tyron is boring, who wants to see that" - just after his fight at 214

That's just this year, backwards promoter lol

Dana is the head of the company. I don't care if you think Tyron's fight was boring, you don't go out and say what he said about him in that presser.
Not only is if disrespectful it makes no sense from a business perspective. Why would you want to diminish the drawing power of a fighter even further by shitting on him publicly?

This is nothing new for Dana.

It's ironic because GSP, who is being dangled around like this golden money fight, is boring as fuck and IIRC Dana never ripped him publicly like this.

A leopard doesn't change its spots, Dana doesn't mince words if you dont make him any money

Yup, Gsp was they most boring of all point fighters. Geez, I'd hate it when he wouldn't pass guard and just throw a weak punch so the ref wouldn't stand them up.

Was just about to post this. Hoo boy, shit is about to get weird.

I could honestly see Dana firing Woodley rather than apologize. Woodley is a shitty champion and the most boring fighter I've seen in years. Literally nothing of value would be lost if he did get the boot.

I think what's worst about Woodley is he's clearly embraced the champion's fight mentality, and is openly contentious with fans and what they actually want to see and pay for. Mighty Mouse does the same thing. They just do not get it.

That would be terrible for the UFC. If Jon Jones deserves a third chance after 2 personal fuck ups leading to pullouts, Woodley deserves a third chance after 2 disappointing fights.

Like, the guy fought smart fights against two elite specialists. I don't get why Maia and Thompson don't get an equal amount of shit for the quality of those fights since they lost. If Woodley is so cautious and boring, why couldn't they beat him?

Because Woodley had both fighters hurt and could have finished them if he hadn't been so intent on out pointing them to a decision. If he actually came to finish fights he could be a great champion but ever since he won the belt he's been happy to do nothing but try and point fight.
Maia fought a fucking dreadful fight too tho, there's no denying that either. Wonderboy has always been hugely overrated too.

Don't disagree, but 2 bad fights against guys who end people for getting too aggressive IMO is not enough to even consider talking about him like Dana did.

oh shit what up chumley

What up!

I've expressed my disappointment at Woodleys style before, but you can't go firing champions due to uneventful fights, shit happens.

You fix that problem with better matchmaking.

If they want to get a champion to fight, I'd get rid of the five round fight. They're so worried about gassing out that they conserve themselves even when their opponents are hurt. There's no way Woodley's formula will work 100% in a three round fight, and I think he is currently unbeatable in his division. It's not a coincidence that most five round fights end in a decision either.

Just checked the reddit thread about this Woodley/Dana beef. It's not often you see across the board support for Dana in an argument.

My girlfriend came along with us to watch the fights for the first time.

Loved the Cerrone/Lawler fight, loved the Cyborg fight.

Then Woodley/Maia happened and we lost her.

Still, it was an interesting card to introduce a complete newbie, and at the very least we might keep up to date with the Cyborg fights.

I'm with Chumley on being rather ashamed of the fan base for the reaction to Cormier's loss. Bunch of boys in tapout shirts flipping off the screen, calling him a bitch etc. First time I've gone to the pub for the fights since UFC 200. A good reminder not to go.

The crowd at my pub was obviously happy that Jones won, but no one was giving DC shit, in fact I wasn't the only one to ask why the fuck they interviewed him.

On the one hand, Woodley is absolutely entitled to fight safe and coast to victories. He is probably keenly aware that MMA success is fleeting and your time on the top (and your time to make money) can disappear in an instant. That said, he's not entitled to big money fights, and he's not entitled to face GSP, who isn't even an active fighter, and is not the number 1 contender. If his draw power is in question, the UFC has every right to let him fight the top 5-10 guys in his division and, if his fights remain as boring as they've been, languish in the land of low buyrates and fight checks.

Instead of being antagonistic with fans, Tyron should take a page from the GSP playbook and be apologetic after every lackluster performance, promising to "go for the finish" in every pre-fight interview. That carny game worked for years.

I don't know why anyone would believe a word that comes out of Dana White's mouth....constantly flip flops and contradicts himself, he's a moron.

I like how he shits on Woodley but lets other guys hold up entire divisions at will and makes fights that do the same...at least Woodley is out there beating #1 contenders in his division.

The UFC is all over the place when it comes to this...sometimes I wonder why they even have titles or rankings.

It's not flip flopping. The decisions Dana and the UFC make are based on one thing: PPV buys. If you get buys, you get preferential treatment. If you don't, you ain't shit. Even if you are a champ (ask Tyron and Mighty Mouse).

how much credit do you guys give to Dana for building the UFC to what it is today

in the same way Vince building the WWE, or was Dana kind of just "there" that growth was inevitable with him or without him?

I meant he flip flops with his words....he does it all the time.

I get the whole buys thing but I find it odd he singles out certain fighters, champions even, to talk shit about when he really only has 2 big time draws in Conor and Bones.

I mean Stipe and Joanna combined did 300k....Bisping isn't...Garbrandt is...etc. but you never hear a square word about any of them come from DW.

It's just really childish esp. when it came to MM is an all time great and someone Im grateful I get to watch fight.

As much as I don't like Dana I give him a lot of credit for promoting the UFC during the Zuffa era and making it as big as it is today. He got the product out there and got people talking, and made his own brand of carny. He wouldn't allow full carny like Pride style walkouts and he hated on guys like Roy for growing a hobo beard. He always had a strong sense of what kind of promotion he wanted the UFC to be associated with, and fuck anyone who disagreed.

Fights aren't nothing without promotion, and it was not an inevitable industry--they had to work to get it where it is.

Yup, that's a great match. Interesting stuff afterwards with Royce, and then Eddie explained his system to Rickson soon after. I don't follow bjj drama but all of that stuff followed an amazing match.

Allow me to play Tito's Advocate.

Ask yourself if you'd be talking or thinking about Tyron Woodley or Mighty Mouse as much as you have if they haven't been getting grief from Dana White, and rather based solely on their merits as fighters and their performances alone.

Now ask yourself if Dana White's opinion is going to change your or anyone's mind about shelling out money to watch these fighters if he blows smoke up your ass.

As the great Eric Bischoff says, controversy creates cash.

Yeah, I always kind of wondered if the Dana/DJ beef was a work to try and get more viewers. Same with Tyron. But Dana actually is a genuinely petty asshole so IMO it's more likely to be a shoot.

He's the Vince of the UFC, there's almost no way to argue otherwise. But he has even more flaws as a promoter than Vince ever did.

I don't think it's a purposeful tactic or anything, I just don't think Dana sees any promotional value in pretending blatantly awful fights were "technical" in an effort to shine a pile of shit. He even threatened to cut Anderson in Abu Dhabi. The furthest I can remember him going with this is "stop the takedowns if you don't like it" toward fighters, not fans.
