The reason I got into anime, other than growing up with them as cartoons, was because they were violent as fuck! Awesome and exciting fights filled with dismemberment and blood all over the fucking place.

It seems like anime decided lets make the fights dull and slow with scratchy lines all over there faces(I'm looking at you Bleach!)

25 should have been the limit 5 years ago. NOT even Live Action in the states can support 20 series - let alone 60. However, they had 100 projects this year and the networks can only take 25. That could mean that the networks wanted more kids anime but the Animators said no way, or even the margins don't work (Noitamina now doing live action series - an Idea from its American "cousin" Adult Swim) or they dont want to continue to outsource work and try and raise rates for their grunts. This is a very interesting development, that on top of the toy/other multi-media ventures telling the mangaka to "tone down" the ecchi.

I only sense a powder keg waiting to explode.

the only thing wrong with kanon 2006 was the nonstop aaaaauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu~ around episode 10ish.

Not only that, but as Sankaku noted in its "[insert ecchi anime here] Gets Massacred By Censors" articles, most of the "censorship" isn't being done to conform to TV standards, but just to cut out content from the TV version so that fans will buy the full version on DVD. And I'm sure everyone is aware of the cost of DVDs in Japan, right?

Either way, I feel the same way about the anime industry as I feel about the games industry - that both need a major "correction", or even a full-fledged crash, so that they can lose the dross that was dragging them down, reform themselves and regain what was so great about them to begin with. Sadly, as long as the short-term dividend profit of shareholders continues to be the sole obsessive preoccupation of both industries, the current corrupted pop-culture won't change. Yes, corporatism sucks.

And before anyone quotes my avatar in an attempt to be witty, at least KOS-MOS is (modeled after) a full-grown woman. I'm not totally against moe, just not at the expense or exclusion of all else, and...not with little girls, please.

So I'm thinking before clicking "how is the moe article not safe for work?" I click it and see the pic of Lucky Star and think "that seems fine" then my eyes wander to the side of the site...

Goddamn Sanaku Complex. No good ever comes out when I visit that site.

Does anyone who regularly is in the Anime thread know in the past how many moe/loli series have been airing the past year of two? Maybe this is more a gradual increase with a spike than a sudden boom.

Hate on moe all you want, but the switch from cel to digital, despite being rough as fuck at first, was one of the best things that could happen to Japanese animation.

u dumb

In all seriouses, digital has spawned some really wonderful shows like FLCL, the various STUDIO4℃ shorts/shows/movies, etc. But Cel had far more intricate styles and was way more impressive in just about every way. Digital shows have that nauseating generic look to them. There are far less studios making shows like FLCL these days so that's certainly not the norm but the exception.

Why wouldn't it be? there's been a lot of good discussions in this thread (which i wasn't expecting tbh haha). Did you just read the first page and hit reply or something? ;)

Interesting article. That's where I feel the anime industry has been headed for a while now. A big crash. Animators being worked to poverty, all the talent leaving to the gaming side, etc. Then again.. I see the DVD sales numbers every now and then and I just can't help but think to myself that the whole moeblob circle of shit is completely self-sustaining and it'll only get bigger.

only good anime Ive seen in the past year is the one i'm watching right now, Eden of the East even though it has problems, it's pretty good.

I was trying not to be completely negative, but yeah, never could bring myself to watch more than a few eps of Gilgamesh and I sat through the first Kanon... god knows why...

I thought you were talking about the original Kanon.

I'm sure Kanon + Kyoto Animation = just as vapid, but with more sparkles and a dance number

well there certainly are more sparkles, but 2006 was a HUGE improvement over the animated shitstain that was the original kanon. Characters were likable for the short time they existed before suffering from some horrible fate.

why would you? it'd ruin half the fun.
seriously, if you approach magical girl gundam porn gaogaigar warfare as a serious drama you're doing it wrong.

If only those shows approached themselves as candidly and lightly as you put it! Anyway I doubt magical girl nanoha would be any interesting to watch even if I was drunk high and in an ironic mood. To each his own, though.

That's one of the main reasons I stay away from gundam anime. All the same super serious ridiculous hogwash (except G). Some genres just don't mesh with seriousness.

It's a good thing at least the loli thing doesn't seem to be permeating real life like most fads (ganguro, lolita) so at least we can be thankful for-

there are alot of camp shows that take themselves seriously and there's even something of value in that [i call it the starship troopers effect], but nanoha isn't one of em. I highly recommend it if you're ever in the mood for a good old fashioned violent befriending.

Sadly, thats totally loli-unrelated. thats just how nowaday´s girls dress themselves...

Terrible, what's the point of having the same hairstyle.

Maybe if someday I find myself drunk and bored enough I'll give it a try :lol

I don't watch much anime at all. I watched the Devil May Cry anime and thought it was rather awesome, is this a good anime or close to what many of you seem to reference as how anime should be? I ask because i want to watch more anime but don't want to end up watching some loli/moe crap, it's weird and kinda perverse. My experience of anime is Dragonball, SFII: the animated movie & bits of Naruto (Not really my thing, but it was good)

I enjoyed it, and it had a little girl but thank god no loli shit.

Maybe I'm the one with the wrong idea, but I thought most people, when they talk about loli, are talking about little girls.
It doesn't matter how she is dressed or acts, it only matters that she is a little girl to brand her loli.

Nah little girls are OK, its when they are sexualized and such then its a big no no.

Planetes is alright. Manga is better. The lighthearted tone of the early episode of Planetes almost ruin the series, which is a serious space drama.

Michiko and Hatchin had potential, but it turns into typical anime pretty fast. Great visuals and music though.
Haft to say, although the manga of planetes is awesome. I was disappointed that the tone, wasn't as different, as what i expected, the manga still had some of the comedic tone from the anime present, although it was less annoying, as the annoying comic relief characters from the anime series weren't present.

I still wish they had animated the series a year later from when it was released, and animated the last volume of the manga. As the manga ending is > anime ending.

I don't even think that, I mean I don't think they were sexual in Strike Witches were they? I haven't seen much of it outside 5-10 minutes can someone confirm that?

well, aside from the italian characters love of boobs it isn't sexual per say, but its rife with fanservice.

for example, in one episode a character steals another characters panties, which leads to the victim stealing yet another chracters panties which leads to... well, suffice to say there was atleast one pantiless character in every scene. keep in mind that pants were never invented in strike witches.

funnily enough, it was a surprisingly accurate portrayal of the ace the character was based on.

gg interviews CR translator:

There has been a boom in streaming anime over the past year, and gg happens to have contacts with a translator involved with this. He agreed to answer questions related to his work for us and our downloaders. His name is Sam P and he’s a freelance translator, producer and “subtitle engineer” (lolsrslywut). He was previously involved with MX Media, but now he’s working in Japan under sponsorship from Osamu Tezuka’s Tezuka Productions. Currently, he’s translating Shugo Chara Party, Fairy Tail, Tegami Bachi (Letter Bee), Cobra, Yumeiro Patissiere, and Naked Wolves for Crunchy’s streaming. Previously, he translated Saki and Hyakko as well. Got any questions for him about translating for a living or any of the shows he works on? Something about streaming that bugs you and you’re looking for an answer? Leave a comment here on the webpage and we’ll forward our questions + your questions along to him.

Question from gg staff: Why does it seem like the “simul” is being taken out of simulcast lately? As in some shows being streamed days after their first airing.

There was never any such thing as a simulcast in the first place. It’s a made up marketing term and it means whatever the consumers think it means.

Japanese Tv airing of anime is not like tv shows in the US that air at the same time on all local stations. In Japan a particular anime often airs on different days in different areas, and it’s not always Tokyo that gets it first. The recent “not really simulcasts” are for shows whose first airing is not from the station in tokyo and/or the station whom CR has paid for the rights from. Therefore it doesn’t benefit the first airing station to give CR the rights or materials to air it earlier since it’s a different company that gets the revenue from the overseas sales, etc etc… It’s complicated by licensing issues and essentially it’s a “simulcast” as best as can be handled. As to the question “what is a simulcast?” there is actually a legal definition that’s laid out in the licensing contracts, but if you want to find out you’ll need to produce an anime and license it to CR . If you’re all upset that you have to wait a few days after people living in Chiba get to see your animes, then download crappy raws and watch those, but do everyone a favor and subscribe to CR and watch the show again with subs when it comes out. Then at least you’ll be supporting the show you want to watch so badly you can’t wait a few days for.

Remember, that $7 or whatever you pay to CR isn’t really paying for the ability to watch things earlier, because practically all those shows were fansubbed and free (illegally) anyway. It’s paying for the _legal_ right to watch those shows, and it’s helping in a small way influence what kind and type of anime gets made in the future. Believe me, the streaming numbers are being paid attention to. Nobody watches Cobra the Animation on CR? Don’t expect any more retro sci-fi to get streamed. Maybe not even animated. Moe-harem brides maid show #6 goes viral? Expect 10 more a year from now. Overseas money is the big unknown right now, and whatever shows potential might be followed up on.
