Modern Vintage Gamer: Four Days Later...Is the PS5 Pro REALLY worth $700?

Dang it I just remembered I will get my choice of avatar for DenchDeckard DenchDeckard on the 23'rd. What ever will I come up with that is the question.

Hahaha, you dont get shit. I could say you lost the bet because they literally removed the game from sale. It's didn't just stop being pay to play Con - cord literally was the biggest failure in gaming that it closed down. That's closer to being free to not play than being paid to play like you made the bet on.

Can I go and buy a copy of concord to play it now?

I was wondering if the PS5 Pro could have overclocked the CPU more at the expense of a lower GPU clock for more CPU heavy games. The console uses an APU with a GPU and CPU so it shares the same cooling system. The GPU is also 45% more powerful versus the PS5's which means that is the overhead for the CPU boost. Maybe the power and heat requirements for the CPU clock boost limit the overclock to 10% rather than 20% or even 30%.

As it is the Pro is a nice system but with no real improvement to the CPU or its clock speeds the system seems a bit unbalanced. CPU heavy games that did not lock to 60 fps are still not quite locking to 60 fps on the Pro, which is disappointing. However, the good news is that those games now run above 48 fps which is within the PS5's limited VRR range of 48-60 Hz but you need a VRR display obviously to use it. That said, if Sony had implemented better VRR and system wide 120 Hz support with LFC on the base PS5 in the first like the Xbox One and Series consoles use then VRR would also be a better experience on the base PS5 for games such as Elden Ring.

Great effort. The defence has now moved to highlighting the shortcomings of a cheap entry level console that was designed for those who can't afford an expensive high powered console and it's ability to deliver a gaming experience but gimped due to its hardware choices for its price.
Way to miss the point entirely about narrative projection on "failure in marketing" with your misinterpreted statements from Cerny.

You are now trying to use this as a gotcha in defence of a PRI console that costs over double the price of a series s but at its current state shows similarities to that console in how it is delivering its experiences.
GMtn8u8XYAA8ofJ.jpg

The PS5 Pro is the best console to play games on. It isn't offering a similar experience to Series S in any way no matter how much you want to push that narrative. It isn't a headache or preventing games from coming to base PS5 either. I'm sure you're prepping people for your own "next gen" marketing though.

I'm a bit disappointed that we're seeing "fidelity pro" and "performance pro" modes in some games. Cerny made a point in the PS5 Pro technical presentation concerning 60 FPS being the minimum performance target and "removing the decision, or at least narrowing the divide" between fidelity and performance modes to give players the higher performance and higher fidelity at the same time. I think patched Sony first party games are doing that better than third party games, so there are some examples of the benefits we will see in the future.

I don't think it's an issue with the PS5 Pro itself, though. I think it's some developers either not understanding how to make it happen just yet, or it not being worth the time to really dig in and make more improvements. I'm guessing future titles will benefit more than existing ones.
Why having a choice is a bad thing?
Why people inisting on abolishing 30 fps? You still have your 60 fps mode now with ~standard fidelity level of graphics.
But there are people, myself included, those don't really care about 60 fps, I am completely fine with stable 30, and I want this extra power to be spent for internal resolution (I much more sensitive tomit than fps), better/more effects etc.

It's an old truth that at any level of power of hardware game can still target 30 fps, putting raw power against IQ and not performance. And there are always be people who prefer it to be this way.

If anyone doubts the ps5 pro, they really need to see Ratchet amd Clank in full fidelity mode.

30 fps seems acceptable in that game, so it's not as jarring as horizon for example, but the visuals....

Its good enough that I quit my HFW DLC playthrough on PC for the Pro version.
Umm...why? If the pc is powerfull enough horizon just straight up run better on pc and i vaguely remember that you have a monster pc with a 7900xt...

It was a matter of playing on a monitor vs playing on a couch\tv?!

I agree on what you said about my comment, I didnt mean it in terms of PS5 Pro is delivering a series S experience. You brought up the Series S, and I was rebutting your claims.

I am sure there is a lot of Sony posters on here, probably yourself included. I just cant be assed to trauwl through users posts to find them, that insulted the series S for not hitting 1440p or 60 fps when the console outputs at 1440p with upscaling. The Ps5 pro is outputting at 804P in some games, 1080p etc then upscaling to 4k and it is also missing its 60fps target in many games.

As long as all you Sony guys show the same energy to Sony and the PS5 pro, all should be well. But, I am sure you will come up with some goal post move that makes you feel like you and Sony are always right. It's just not needed for the health of the boards. An opposite opinion is valid and should be entertained.

I am not the one person who agree's with this video and its points. there are millions upon millions of people who will feel the same and just stick to the PS5, and that is fine. I don't get why you all get so worked up about the negatives that are being shared. Also, I never brought up the series s, you did. I wasnt comparing it to that. I was comparing it to the price and what was mentioned. Cerny mentioned 60FPS many times but not people use the argument its down to the developer. It's always been down to the developer and it seems that many times they choose sub 1080p resolutions on these consoles to deliver higher FPS.

Basically, I am waffling. I'll just leave you guys to it now.

I personally would love to see the percentage splits of other pro devices vs other products in their stack. That would be interesting to see. How many iphone pros are sold bs standard iphones and what percentage split it is etc.

Even for people who *want* the Pro to be worth it, there are still many questions about the hardware's future. So there is discussion.
Yes, but do we need so many threads saying the exact same thing but from a different video/article?

There seems to be one every day is my point (and it's the same people in each thread saying it's worth it or it isn't worth it, or just trolling)

Another day another 'is the PS5 Pro worth it?' thread/video/article.

Heres a tip ... If it's worth it to you (or not) why do you care what others think? Unless you need justification for your purchase from random people on the internet (which is just sad to be honest)
Some people have orders they need to follow.

Sure you take a ps5 digital 1tb add 1tb nvme for 2tb total and it's around $530. $550-600 for the PS5 Pro yeah i could see that... 67% bigger gpu, PSSR hardware, 2gb DDR5, improved RT and wifi 7 for $20-70 more.
Counting costs like this is just dumb. At this point of the gen, Sony could reduce the price of the base PS5. Well, they have reduce their production costs for sure.

Xbox one x was a proper mid gen console where it was a big enough leap where a jump from base to mid gen console made sense.
This just feels a fast money grab from Sony because there is no competition
You...do know the PS5 Pro started development even before the PS5 original released in 2020 right?

Sony had no idea Xbox would barely be selling consoles 4 years in.

As much as I have shit talked the Pro, I do admit I will probably get one for GTA VI. Contemplating getting one now for FF7R, but I know as soon as I do the PC version will be announced.

Play both on my TV.

I like the picture better on PS5 Pro vs what the game is like with FSR on PC. Only thing im missing out on is the 120 frames vs 60 frames which is significant but not a dealbreaker.

Yeah i guess playing with fsr must be rough.

Thank god i chose an nvidia gpu when i made the last build, i was really close to buy an amd card.

Don’t get me wrong- its far from terrible. The 7900xt is a fantastic GPU. Its just that now I have access to a true AI upscaler and some games might actually present better with PSSR.

I think you made the right choice. At the time, my only option in the same price range was a 4070ti which was an auto no-go due to VRAM.

With the 8000 AMD series GPUs, I hope they announce or release FSR 4. They need an AI upscaler bad.

An high end gpu having worse iq than an overpriced, unbalanced pro upgraded console sound pretty terrible to me, ngl :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Even more surprising that sony can make a better upscaling tech than amd that has been working on it for probably close to a decade now...

All the bitching about the price, and I dunno...when I first heard the price, yeah it seemed kinda high, but I paid $600 for a PS3 in 2006. It's not like $700 is hard to swallow.
The PS3 had then cutting edge blu-ray tech in it that was selling for a grand in standalone players. Selling at $600( there was also a $500 option, let's not forget) was more justifiable.

Plenty of people have the money to buy this thing. But if you watch the video and actually listen to what is being said. There are those that think a pro console should come with all the bells and whistles. The disk drive etc and that maybe the jump is not as big as what was seen with the ps4 pro going from 1080p to 4k.
Did you had a PS4 Pro?
I had it for around 2 years and i remember that they were maybe a few games running at 4k. The PS4 Pro only did a bump in resolution. If the PS4 base was 900p then PS4 Pro 1080p. If the base 1080p then the Ps4 Pro 1440p. Also the PS4 Pro didn't let you play games at higher settings. The Xbox one X have more games running at 4k like Read Dead Redemption 2 for example.

Sure why MS haven't reduce the price of the Xbox series? I looked yesterday in Amazon. The Series S cost $300. The Xbox Series X digital 1tb $448.

Why do you guys feel that companies need to drop price of their hardware? People will still be too cheap to buy them.

Now imagine it’s 2006, and you are paying $600 to play PS2 games, just at a slightly higher resolution and framerate.

$1400 is Aus for the pro, disc drive and stand. I paid way less than half for my PS5 WITH a full priced game (worth $120). Fuck no it’s not worth it! Just stupid…

Neither company, beyond component costs, have any real reason to do so now. Xbox isn't applying any competitive pressure to PlayStation for the latter to have reason to drop price. And in Xbox's case, they very clearly have conceded this gen and feel nothing is to gain from dropping price. Same reason they've decided not to make a Pro, it's not moving the needle.

I had 2 x pro's and One X's as well.

I didnt like my first day one pro as it was super loud, but my replacement death stranding one was silent and I loved it. I think it did well at delivering great experiences on Sony first party titles. One X was a great console for third parties and Read Dead 2.

I will have order.

Judge Banjo asks that both parties submit their original posts.

I will then make comments based on the facts of the case and legalities of the case.

A Jury of your GAF peers will then render a verdict.

haha, this sounds like a great idea.

The basic jihst is I said Concord looks like its going to struggle and will be free to play or on PS Plus by Xmas, I think. Posts below.

I think you'll find I said it would come to ps plus within 3 months. But, now I'm convinced that it will be dead within 3 months.

I think if it doesn't survive past 3 months, I still win? I was saying it would be such a failure that they will put it on ps+ to try save players.

I don't think anyone could expect a game to perform as badly as Sonys latest and greatest.

Wild

That was August 30th. Trying to find earlier posts.

BOOYA Oppoi Oppoi SUCK IT!!! - I found it lol
I'm just making a bet that they move it to ps plus extra or ps plus within 3 months of launch.

Or they just kill it.

That was May 31st. I do get some shit right.
Do you have a counter bet?

Like you bet it will be successful in some way or something fun?

Or will it just be that it doesn't go on ps plus within 3 months of launch?

In fact when does it launch?
It will stay off PS plus for 3 months to test the waters. Winner chooses the other ones avatar. Deal?

So, What is your conclusion Banjo64 Banjo64 ?

Except in 2006 (going off an inflation calculator), $700 in todays money was equal to around $450 back then (also, patched games are more than just slightly higher resolution and framerate)

It essentially boils down to the same argument for the Series S vs the Series X, but one step above in this case. Do you want the extra power and performance? Then it’s worth it to you over the base console. Don’t really care and just play COD, Madden, and Grand Turismo casually on your off days? Keep the base system, you’ll be fine.

Thank God for the s because it taught us that all they need to do for the PS5 Pro is flip a switch to get games running.

It shouldn’t be a surprise. Sony has the best upscaling TVs on the market. They also were first to market with an upscaler with checkboarding going off memory.

If anything, I think many underestimate Playstation because its a console and many assume console= no innovation which hasn’t been the case.

I don’t understand why the price always seems to be the main talking point. It’s a “premium” edition of the console so of course it will cost more than the base console.

The only issue I see with the console is that they should have included the disc drive because you usually get everything with the “premium” edition but if the price point is too high they have 2 other cheaper options (disc and disc less base ps5).

At the end of the day, if you really care about fps and performance and you mainly play on PS5 this is worth it because you will get the best performance for ps5 games with the ps5 pro.

But if your hang up on the price than clearly there are cheaper options to match your budget. It’s like people want a 4090 experience with a 2070 super budget, it makes no sense because realistically how much cheaper could this console have been.

The main issue at the moment is they don’t have enough games to showcase the tech of the ps5 pro but that’s the case with most consoles at launch, that obviously will change next year when they release more games to take advantage of the new tech in the pro.

I had chatgpt write me a summary from the subtitles because MVG's videos are just too often meaningless and not worth the time you spend watching them.
And again it proved true, he says what everyone says and what everyone knows.
In conclusion, the PlayStation 5 Pro delivers a powerful upgrade for gaming enthusiasts seeking a premium console experience, but it comes with a hefty price tag and some notable limitations. The PS5 Pro enhances performance and visual fidelity in certain games, particularly with its AI-assisted upscaling (PSSR) and improved GPU capabilities, which boost frame rates and graphics in titles like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Dragon's Dogma 2. However, these improvements aren’t universal, as older games and even some PS5 titles struggle to fully utilize the new hardware, and enhancements can be inconsistent across different games.

The lack of a bundled Blu-ray drive and the high $699 price tag make this a hard sell for many gamers, particularly given that much of the PlayStation library was developed without the PS5 Pro's specifications in mind. For casual players or newcomers to the PlayStation ecosystem, the standard PS5 or PS5 Slim may be a more practical choice, as they deliver a comparable experience without the additional cost. Ultimately, the PS5 Pro shows potential but lacks a killer feature or exclusive game lineup that would justify the investment for all but the most dedicated PlayStation fans. Only time and future game releases will tell if the PS5 Pro can fulfill its promise as the top-of-the-line console option in Sony's lineup.

I guess after the dust settled my biggest gripe isn't the console itself but more Sony exclusives.
So we've got a good batch of multiplatforms that already run well on other machines but nothing first party built to really push the Pro. I'll probably continue to wait for exclusives and PSVR2 catalog growth.

Ps5pr0 is worth it for tons of players, it will easily reach 15m units by end of the gen, maybe even much more, like 25m.
For some ppl it isnt worth its price ofc, and its fine too, not all products are made for every person, its not tomato soup so every1 has to like it :D

Oh, and for ppl who dont like the 700$ price- here in europe/poland pr0 with discdrive would cost total of exactly 1k usd, im saying would, coz discdrives arent avaiable to buy, even at its price of 600pln which is 150usd, all taken by scalpers, even in biggest online stores they are all soldout w/o any info of avaiability).

thats how it looks everywhere in bigger stores but the less known/smaller ones scalping those discdrives to hell and back themselves, example here
as u can see price is 1159 pln which is 293 usd :)

4 days is not a good way to gauge the capabilities of ps5 pro and it's just recently launch and developers are just new to the ps5 pro. PSSR ML will continue to learn, receive updates, and get better in handling each game. I'm sute each game will still have constant update as the psrr ml will continue to adjust each games. You are still lucky to have ps5 pro, because for four more years before ps6 , you will still have the best console with PSSR ML capabilities.

This doesn't work like that. PSSR is not trained on specific games (like DLSS 1.0 was).

For sure there will be new versions of PSSR but games will have to be patched (most likely).
