Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate announced for Wii U/3DS, coming to West, no 3DS online

Same essence, sure, but MH4 is bringing many additions like platforming and villages.

Content is the biggest difference, we are talking about different generations, you won't find 90% of MH3U content in MH4 and vice versa.
Well for one Tri U comes out next month and MH4 might not come to the West for a long time, if ever. (Has MH4 been confirmed to be localized? I don't even know.)
I hope we do get MH4 in the end, because I'm really loving the MH3U demo and I'd love being able to play the "evolution" of the series. If my PS2 wasn't broken I might try to find the first game to check it out, I love discovering series like this and then going back in time :P

Oh man, if you go back to those games, you will appreciate MH3U even more.

I've read the manual and can't wait to go back in and kill some monsters now that I know the controls. Also, according to the manual, you CAN lock on.

Good job reading the manual, I really think a lot didn't do that. :p

Well lock-on is not really the same type of lock-on that we are used to, like Z-locking from Zelda. It just recenters your camera to face the monster.

So what's different with this Monster Hunter and the one that was on the Wii, other than visuals?

Tons of monsters, a new element, 4 new weapon classes and a split of bowguns into light and heavy, harder difficulty quests, and etc.

Two questions:

Why do I sometimes trip in the fight against Plesioth when I'm close to him? I don't receive any damage and it doesn't look like he's attacking me...

The light bowgun in the demo doesn't support rapid fire? Or am I missing something?

The tripping is due to it moving. It will cause splash damage.

Only some ammo types can be rapid-fired.

Good lord, the game just gets so much better once you discover the lock-on feature. Can concentrate on learning its tells more than just trying to position the camera all the time.

He moves so much when low on health and being in the right spot to not get hit get hard when he just make a side step and then spin again that it's just easier to do with a shield.
I noticed that with the snow bear, depending the weapon, you can really get in cringeworthy situation, when he slides endlessly, I don't know if you can stop him with the lance with a right hit, but it's horrible, unequip the weapon to run at him, then he slides the other way, I was desperate lol.

Strange, didn't notice any damage. And the bowgun does support rapid fire after all? Have to test different ammo types then...

Woops, sorry, I said splash damage, but I meant another term, though I do know what I mean. It will make you lose any red health you have. You won't lose any actual health, only recoverable health.

Rapid fire being not much of a gap between shots. Normal and pellet ammo types are rapid fire.

Wow, I love the 3DS demo. I've only played the PSP versions and the touch screen camera controls works perfectly. More games should do this. I just wish they'd ditch using the dpad for the camera and let you map items to them.

I wonder if I could borrow my friends 3DS which is a Japan unit and use a japan MH3U on it but in English? That Resident Evil game was able to..as in select English and get the game in English.

(I live in Asia btw)

Sorry I don't know for sure, but I would have to think not. For as long as it has been out in Japan I would assume I would have seen at least one single video showing English Language as an option there. Resident Evil / Biohazard are historically a multi language (meaning English Voice, Japanese subs) game... sadly Japanese Monster Hunters have always been just Japanese.

Why wouldn't it be? It has online which was the main hold up on Tri G.

MH is clearly one of Capcom's key franchises now.

Cheapest day 1 I found in Europe so far is ~50€.

A stark reminder of why I usually don't day 1 games. Here's hoping one or two retailers want to shift some units and make a good offer.

To be more specific, underwater monsters generate current when they move quickly, which causes you to stagger. Similarly, flying monsters do the same thing when you take too much wind from them (either from landing or moving quickly), and underground/large monsters will cause tremors.

It's annoying, but it's part of the experience. :)

So looking forward to digging back into this game and this series. Finally I'll be getting in on the ground floor this time, so I'm hoping that I'll actually be able to hunt alongside some fellow GAFers unlike my experience with Tri.

Having only played Tri before, going through and testing out the weaponry I haven't had a chance to use has been fun. I started off with Lances in Tri initially so I was curious about how the gunlance would fare, but I feel like it would take a loooooong time before that would really "click" with me. It feels to me even less mobile than the original lance, and while I started to get the hang of it a bit towards the end of the Lagombi fight, I don't know that I'd fully devote myself to it. What I WOULD like to develop my skills on is the Hunting Horn. I've been curious about it ever since I saw some videos of it a long while ago, and I'm having fun with it (although memorizing all the various song combos will take a long time).

For the more experienced bow-users out there: What is the core methodology for using it effectively? I've tried using it a couple of times but can never seem to stack on enough damage to finish anything off within the time limit.

Didn't you say you hate the demo? Lol.

I agree that it's part of the experience. I don't think experiencing frustration in a video is a bad thing at all. Super Meat Boy and Dark Souls can be frustrating, but as with this game, when you fail a bunch of times, victory then becomes that much sweeter.

That feeling of accomplishment just doesn't exist with games that try to hold your hand.

Rage! I am not buying a console or handheld for one game!!!1

Tried Plesioth twice on 3DS and got fairly stomped both times. Granted I was using light/heavy bow gun, and I don't feel like those are as beginner friendly as other weapons.

How far away can you hit enemies with the bow gun? I had a hard time telling I was connecting on a lot of long distance shots.

Getting my Wii U in less than two weeks, will definitely record some off screen footage.

Gonna try Plesioth for the third time now, I actually prefer to fight him underwater, on land it's hard to hit his head, lol.

For an odd reason, i found it easier to avoid his attacks underwater.

True, he is so much easier underwater. I didn't expect that.

Cause he doesn't do that hipcheck and you can avoid is tailspin. The range on land is just crazy.

I think Capcom has included it in the actual game's overseas release. Japan had to get it via patch update.

I don't think so. They would have talked about that feature for sure. And the post above has what is going to be included day 1.

Bowguns require a bit of research before using, but don't shoot from extreme range. You generally want to be fairly close to the monster (just out of attack range), but effective ranges depend on the type of ammo. Ammo types have different properties as well - for example with Pierce shots you want to try and line up the shot through the center of Plessy so you get extra hits as it travels through his long-ass body. Thunder S works the same way and is where the majority of your damage in this fight will come from. I recommend tiring him out, getting him in a shock trap, then unloading all your thunder ammo.

I'm no expert, in fact I only ever picked up bowguns back in MHFU because of Plesioth. Hell I'm not 100% sure how sub shot works but it seemed to get the job done, I destroyed Plessy with ease using the HBG. If only I had a Lao cannon with autoreload and thunder/fire ammo I could do it in 3 minutes.

I just tried the demo and I have previously played 2 on the psp. I don't notice that much of a crazy graphical boost but I am still terrible at this game. I like some of the new weapons but it is hard to find something that fits your style. The music club is a past favourite but it is difficult to use without some instructions. Whats very good with the demo is that you get to try all different weapon types.

man the feeling of fighting those big monsters with the music really draws you in
i tried fighting the water dragon (sorry forgot the name) and it felt like an epic battle as i tired to battle in the sea and on land man this game is fun

I don't have the link to the 5 minute Deviljho solo offhand so this will have to suffice as an example of masterful dodging. One might even say this is more impressive since he's dodging the attacks for twice as long!

For the uninformed, each of those roars/stomps would have stunned the player if he hadn't dodged at the correct time.

That is just sick. I love this game

I noticed that he stopped moving a lot there. I'm not sure if it was tired or it was one of its moves thought. It stayed still for about 10 seconds, enough time to land 3-4 hits.

when he's tired (drooling) he will occasionally stop and hang his head down for a while. I definitely advise dropping your shock trap at this time.

The timer got me while fighting Plessy last night :P is the timer always 20 minutes in the actual game or does it vary by quest?

In general most quests give you a time limit of 50 minutes, which only really becomes an issue the first time you're fighting a huge monster with tons of health, and whose openings for attack you aren't familiar with.

I think a couple of special event quests might only have the timer set to 20 minutes, but by and large you won't have to worry about the clock too much.

50 minutes is what I was told in this thread.

That's good to hear. I didn't even know there was a timer at all before trying out the demo. 50 minutes does not seem like it will be a problem then.

Exactly what I did. lol Also, Kayamba and Cha Cha work really well as distractions. But they also tend to hit my barrel bombs at the wrong time. They almost killed me one time.

any tips for playing with the switch axe? I really liked the feeling of it, even beat the bunny pretty fast, but the fight was far from perfect.
I guess the sword mode does more damage than the axe? what's the proper way to use it?

I personally use the axe mode more and when the meter has filled up I use the sword for extra damage. I am not sure thought if the axe does impact or cut damage.

You've got more mobility while in axe mode than sword mode, so if you're just moving around and trying to get into position for attacking, then axe is more the way to go. The sword's attacks are a little faster and quick to combo, but your movement is slowed, best to use when a monster is tired out or if you're in a spot where you know you'll be able to get several hits in without retaliation. And of course if the monster is downed/paralyzed/trapped, that's when to go for the sword's big discharge attack.

thanks for the advice.
another thing: is it possible to cut off tails with the switch axe? If I remember correctly it counted as blunt damage?

I'm new to MH but what I can tell you is that it can be devastating once you get the combos (switching from sword to axe ) with stoping your attack. Keep in mind that you must also dodge so don't just go swinging your weapon, get the timings right.

Pretty sure it's Cut damage, so it can cut tails. (Axes aren't blunt typically.)

BTW, Sword Mode has auto-ESP, which means your attacks won't bounce unless you have literally no sharpness (i.e. Red Sharpness).

And for the Burst attack, you can end it early if you need to GTFO in a hurry. In Tri, you did it by holding Down.
