Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

8PM sounds good too, I suggested 4:30PM just come back from uni at around 3:30PM EST lol. Also, I'm going to use a new hunter regardless.

This game was/is awesome!

Now I need to camp out at a gamestop and find out if there is ANYONE in this area that plays this game. If I can find at least one person locally getting the Wii U or 3DS version, and I make friends with them, then I can justify buying the 3DS version. If not, well no point buying it.

When Smash Bros. comes out, I know I'll be getting both Wii U and 3DS versions. :D

I've been trying the bowguns and I don't see the point of the Light Bowgun, at least in the demo monsters, the Heavy one seems to be better at everything.

Not that I dislike this kind of initiative, but you could take this one of the Monster Hunter community threads and let this one be about the Ultimate demo. :p

I did my first Plesioth run earlier today and my god, could they have chosen a worse monster to show off the underwater fighting portions. Even as a defender of the underwater battles in Tri, his unwieldy body and huge hitbox attacks make for a terrible first underwater experience. A completely different (and inferior) vibe to the elegance of a Lagi battle or even Gobul.

Shit decision.

Why is this game dependant on the Game Pad? I choose the CC pro and yet the auto target on/off is still only on the touch screen? I heard ZL did that but it didn't work and got my ass kicked while I fiddled through the options checking.

I think it's ZR. It does work, it makes a little noise when you hit it.

so if I have an Aussie MH3U for the 3DS, and I have a US Wii U and US MH3U game... Does that mean I can play online on the US servers if I transfer my 3DS game on my US Wii U????

If so, then if I have another Wii U, this time Aussie Wii U and Aussie MH3U game. I can alternate playing between US and PAL servers?????

I still haven't gotten a chance to put too much time into the demo but I'm getting used to the dual analog controller setup slowly but surely. If you were a wiimote/nunchuck fan in Tri like me definitely try the classic controller pro if you have not already done so. I'm talking about the wii one not the $50 wiiU one. All I had was the original classic controller and wow is it bad for any game that uses the sticks. I picked up the pro just for 3U. I am still getting used to the buttons but the sticks feel familiar to the nunchuck. That familiar feeling should really help for folks who gunned much in Tri. Aiming felt so different with the gamepad.

It was this. I assumed they were already coated. When the coating wasn't depleting I also assumed they just removed that for demo purposes.

THIS IS WHY I DON'T USE BOWS AND BOWGUNS. I'm too stupid.

Well if you didn't know how to load ammo with bowgun your character would just shake his/her gun for 20min. I'm hoping that would be a strong enough hint ;)

So I just devoted about 3 Lagombi runs to figuring out all the ins and outs of the gunlance. I really love it.
I get a kick out of going poke, poke, bang, repeat. The blast seems to push you back a perfect distance compared to the triple poke dodge I'd be doing with the lance.

On the 3DS, there's a small button on the corner of the touch screen that replaces what + used to do on Tri for the most part (man is that ever useless for the SnS). The demo refers to it as the special attack button. Anyway, I'm guessing gunlance doesn't have any use for that when the weapon is drawn? Or maybe it only does something in a certain part of a combo that I haven't figured out yet?

I don't want to admit how long I went before I figured out how to actually use my bowgun's scope. I just used the quick aiming.

As far as I can remember, the "special attack" button doesn't do anything for the Gunlance. Running through its movelist in my head I certainly can't think of anything it would do. Man...I still wish I was better with the Gunlance. I keep trying to use it and I like the concept a lot but it still feels like a bit of a pain to me compared to the normal Lance.

In other news that's probably unimpressive to most hunters here, I finally managed to take down Plesioth. It's probably about my fifth attempt at him since I got the demo, all previous fights with him timing out. This one nearly did as well but a sudden and frantic flurry of Hunting Horn attacks to his head kept him KO'd and flinching enough to put him down (never even saw him flinching, so the sudden victory came as a surprise to me). Certainly hasn't dulled my enthusiasm for trying to learn the HH at all!

I've now beat both Lagombi and Plesioth with every weapon. Though, I did get kittycarted by Plesioth when killing them with either bowgun for the first time.
Everyone getting the 3DS version needs to try bowgunning a big monster at least once. It's horrifying when you've got the 3D up and you see a Plesioth charging at you in first-person.

Also, quoting myself for new page:
Does anyone know if you can do both local and online multiplayer simultaneously on the Wii U? Say myself and a friend have the Wii U version, another friend has the 3DS version. Can the 3DS play with one Wii U while the other joins them online?

I made this guide for Tri over three years ago.
Whoa, you're the one who made that guide? I used that when I started with the series. Thanks!
Not sure if it's worth it, but the side smack should cause stamina drain if you hit the body. I like to slip it in before I roll away or use it to link charge attacks on a immobile monster.

It's kind of funny that I main hammers but the only time I've carted in the demo at all was hammering Plesioth, who I've killed millions of times. Guess some things never change and I'll stick to gunning him in the full game.

Does the HDD case have its own power supply? I recall the manual recommending only HDDs with their own power. I'd guess it's probably got something to do with your HDD setup though. Have you run any other Wii U games on it?

Yea I've run Trine 2 on it. I just tried the demo again and now it works. Its a hdd with no power supply. Well I'm good now since it worked.

Finally downed Plesioth! couldn't get it done with Dual Swords (which has been my favorite weapon so far) so I switched to the Long Sword and did it first try. The 19th can't get here fast enough, I think I am gonna pre-order at Gamestop and hope that the digital guide is good.

Finally beat Pleso with the GS. Got lucky with fishing him out and having bombs setup where he lands. Almost didn't get that in because after the fishing out animation happened I accidentally jumped in the water so I only got my small barrel bomb in as he was standing up, luckily he didn't move away by the time they all went off.

Still took around 17 minutes though.

Checked my Wii U log and I have 7.5 hours logged on the demo already. I don't think I've ever played a demo more than an hour before.

Gun Lance is really good against Plesioth, I managed to beat it pretty easily when I couldn't in time with the Axe. (almost) The Gun Lance has some lightning element attached to it or something so I suppose that makes it do more damage to it.

This demo has allowed me learn how to use, and experiment with every weapon in the game, which I never got around to doing in Tri. I mostly stuck with what I knew which was the Long Sword for the most part, and sometimes the S&S, and the hammer.

I'm gonna be crafting tons of weapons this time around I think

Yeah, this demo is great for people who have played it before but I noticed it's not really good for new players.

Can gunners effectively cut tails in any game post Tri?

I believe so. Honestly, I haven't really paid much attention to it, but apparently, you can use any type of ammo on it to damage the tail. However, the last ammo that actually cuts the tail off has to be done with sliced-based ammo like slice shot. I'm not sure if all 3 bowgun types are capable of cutting tails off since I'm not familiar with using this weapon class.

This player cuts the tail off at 5:50.

I totally agree with this. I hated having to use unfamiliar weapons in Tri's arena, but it's much more for experimenting here. I'll probably still stick to the GS for solo progression, but I'll keep some DS and HH for grinding and coop.

According to my activity log I've played the MH3U demo for 5 hours and change. I just keep going back to it! Finally managed to stagger Plesioth. I find Ples easier in water than inland. Its slide and tail sweep moved are just incredibly annoying on land!

Yeah me too, it also seems like it does less damage in water, but it certainly is much easier to dodge and hit in water.

Royal Ludroth would probably have been the best "introductory" water monster, but I think that would have lacked the excitement of the Plesioth battle. Having Royal Ludroth as a "Medium" difficulty option in addition to the other two probably would have made a world of difference to people experiencing underwater combat for the first time though.

Debating between switch axe and hammer...

I love the versatility of the switch axe, but breaking monsters faces feels so good.

You can still break their face with the Switch Axe, just not as easily and with significantly less of that satisfying "crunch."

I tried to use that fishing trick someone used in plesioth in a video with the hunting horn and it won't let me fish for it. What gives?

If the monster knows you're in the area you can't fish.

Hammer is a weapon that's pretty easy to pick up in the early game because it's high mobility and high impact, so it has a really nice learning curve to it. I'd probably recommend it most if this is your first MH. Super fun weapon.

Do what I do and pick both! You'll eventually get to a point where when farming for one weapon or armor set, you'll have leftover materials that can be used for another weapon type.
Also, choosing both allows you to be versatile in single player if say, for example, you main the Hammer for face bashing, but need to cut off monster tails with the Switch Axe.

But I have to say, the full explosion special attack in sword mode on the Switch Axe is just as satisfying as breaking monster's faces in.

The continual X swing of the SA after a monster is KO'd or trapped feels great. It almost feels like cheating to get so many hits in. This is from a main GS user. Im sure if you are use to dual sword its no big thing, but dam it felt good in Tri

I remember the first time I met Plessy on MHFU, in that cave, I went in with the GS in spite of advice to the contrary and then played the waiting game like some Ahab (or every other player). The white (not white) whale (fish) hiding in the sea, playing tricks. Spent close to the 50 minutes finishing him off. In this demo, under 10 minutes. Not with the GS, mind.

I think my favorite part of this is how it reminds me of the hunts from Final Fantasy XII except more evolved. Hunts were my favorite part of XII and since it is what I consider the best FF, I'm just really enjoying this whole thing. Any other Hunter noobies reminded of FFXII?

It's the reason why I'm so interested in it. The Club Hunt contest and being a part of Clan Centurio was awesome.
