Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

From what I understand Wii U targets 45 but struggles to reach it often, meaning the average is around 35 or so I think.

Yes, Wii U version is 1080p.

I didn't know this. I guess for what is clearly a quick port, that makes the situation a bit better.

I imagine it's the same reason they didn't update SotC to run at 60, because the animations were not built for that framerate.

You can tri on dolphin just fine at 60fps and it looks and plays fantastic. 30fps is just laziness.

So what's the framerate on the wiiu like?

edit: nevermind just saw Andrex's post

As a first timer, I downloaded both versions. Tried only the bunny.

For the 3DS, I don't understand the touch D-Pad. By the time I got the bunny in my sights, it slid out of the way, meaning I'd have to get the camera right then attempt to attack. Constantly kept mowing me down because of it. That wasn't fun at all.

For Wii U, it looks pretty. Only tried it for a few minutes, realizing it would take a while. Give it a better shot when I got a chunk of time. I think that'll be my best bet if I like it and want to buy since that touch D-Pad on the 3DS version is terrible and would drive me crazy.

Overall, I'm totally lost in terms of what I'm doing, the controls, inventory items, the two little dudes following me around. Wish it had some walkthrough in the beginning. I'll keep playing around with the demo but it seems like a tough game to grasp for a new player.

Grrr, had Plesioth on the ropes then the stupid time limit ran out. Wish the demo gave you like 10 more minutes at least. Still had a ton of fun though, and the Wii U version is gorgeous (even if the frame rate is a little spotty) ROLL ON MARCH 19TH.

Welcome to Monster Hunter.

There is actually a tutorial in the full game, and you'll fight smaller monsters first before being thrown into an ordeal with a larger one, but it's a game that does rely on learning from your mistakes.

Just remember as a new player in the real game you won't just create a character and be thrown into that scenario.

Killed the Lagombi easily with Dual Sword, Bow and Heavy Bowgun. I also killed the Plesioth on my first try with the Light Bowgun (I was a Bowgun specialist when I was playing Tri), though this time I almost hit the time limit.

The L button feature is a great addition... Though the underwater battles are tedious, like I expected. It seems that the Circle Pad Pro is necessary if you don't want to throw your 3DS by the window when fighting underwater.

I went back to using my trusty switchaxe. Rusty as hell, but managed to finish in a decent time. The sharper geometry, slighly sharper textures and high res interface makes for a much more pleasant experience than back when I played the original tri on an hdtv. I'm not a fan of the lockon, but it makes water battles slightly less disorienting.

First time monster hunting after fighting the rabbit thing with sword and shield dual swords felt like easy mode. Specially with the lighting enchant.

I feel really bad for first-timers. The full game does have some tutorial quests to ease you in, although it's still a long learning curve.

Once you've encountered the monster, tap the bottom right corner of the touchscreen to enable lock on. Then, when you tap the L button, the camera automatically faces the monster.

It's a common complaint by newcomers but the lack of lock on is a bit of a sacred cow for devotees. Often you will not want lock on because you need more precision in your attacks. One of the MH clones, God Eater, has lock on and I really found it useless there.

Ah, okay. Well, hmm. I guess I better give the demo some more time later on and see if I can get a feel for things. I certainly like the idea of MH and the potential for some strategic combat.

Once you've encountered the monster, tap the bottom right corner of the touchscreen to enable lock on. Then, when you tap the L button, the camera automatically faces the monster.

Ooooooh, okay. Phew. Glad there's at least something like that.

Oh don't you worry. Plenty of walkthroughs at the beginning of the full release! ;). I think it took me around 9 hours of single player time until I was comfortable with the controls and mechanics. It's totally worth it.

So do you just keep hitting the gigantic rabbit until it falls over or is there some sort of fatality button cause i swear i hit it a gazillion times and the camera angle thing adjusting it all the time gah! is there a lock cam i can have on the monster?

Welcome to Monster Hunter.

Not gonna lie, it kinda turned me off to buying it but this is just my initial thought. Definitely going to spend more time with it and see what happens.

Just remember as a new player in the real game you won't just create a character and be thrown into that scenario.

I understand that and it's good to know. Just feels very overwhelming right off the bat.

Once you've encountered the monster, tap the bottom right corner of the touchscreen to enable lock on. Then, when you tap the L button, the camera automatically faces the monster.

Ah, okay. Next time I try it, I'll definitely keep this in mind.

No you can't play Tri at 60fps on Dolphin. It may say 60fps, but it still runs at 30fps internally.

My lands, it's worse than I thought then, I loaded it up for about 5 minutes and didn't want to fiddle with dolphin anymore and unloaded it.

So do they *ever* plan on updating this engine or the assets? Seriously the engine is ancient, getting close to 10 years old now.

A 'focus on large monster' button is something I actually requested a lot in the PSP days. I mean, just facing the camera on the monster is all you really want to do most of the time and it's not lock-on. So the fact that they apparently finally put this into the new game, I'm gonna just take credit for that.

Grabbed the 3DS demo. Will grab the Wii-U one when I get home. First impressions from the bunny boss: I'm a first time player, and it took some getting used to but I'm starting to get the hang of it. Chose the gunlance as my first weapon. Felt like sort of a mistake. Took me forever to learn how to even reload the thing and then it was hard to tell if my shots were hitting. Melee felt good with it, though. Ran out of time, but really enjoyed what I played. I think I'll enjoy the wii-u one more, though, just due to the second analogue.

What's the word on the Wii U Monster Hunter bundle? Some sites say it's coming to NA but I can't find anywhere to order it

I doubt it's coming here; Nintendo is publishing in Europe, but Capcom is publishing it here.

I kind of suck at the game. I failed miserably with Sword and Shield and the Big 2 hand sword. Finally succeed with dual blades. Found it a lot easier to survive by being able to dodge faster than the other equipment I tried.

Typically a MH veteran will aim the camera where the monster is going to go and not so much on following the monster everywhere. You need to have some experience with the monster (and controlling your character) in order to handle camera management while simultaneously fighting a boss or two.

Yup, it's all about getting used to a weapon you're comfortable with. Once you think you've mastered (or get bored) of one weapon, give another a go. I've put in over 300 hours into Tri and only used 3 weapons!

Ok so i beat the first mission on the wii u version.
How do i sharpen my weapon?

And also my stylus keeps slipping out of my gamepad, it's like loose. Is it likely my stylus or the gamepad that is at fault here

Just got used to the controls and having fun (am rubbish but!); one gripe is that enemies or your character falls into loading areas and you can accidently leave the heat of battle.

Like that the monsters seek out items like food themselves though. Really cool.

I beat the bunny with a long sword on Wii U and I never used the right analog stick at all. I only used the target button to move the camera. I really like how that works.

I played ~80 hours in MHF2 only using Longsword and Bow. I finally gave Hammer a try and it clicked almost immediately, and since then it's my primary weapon. Before that point I'd always dismissed it as clunky and impossible to use.

The nice thing about Tri and later games is you don't get punished by terrible hitboxes for using non-guarding melee weapons. So I can happily hammer everything nowadays. But on some level I do miss being forced to learn a new weapon to bring down a monster, I got pretty good with HBG thanks to Plesioth and Gravios.

I'm still at work so haven't gotten to play either versions yet but will when I get home tonight. I'm still a little worried how it'll transition over for me since I was a Wii Mote/nunchuck guy during tri.

I'm not use to DA controlling for any games as I only had a Wii last/this gen. I have been playing ACIII on the Wii U though so maybe it will be kinda like that?

I guess I'll find out in a few hours. Can't wait.

So yeah, playing the 3DS demo actually got me worried that maybe I was getting too "old" for Monster Hunter (physically old I mean, what with the hand hurting and not being able to see shit). So I fired it up on the PSP and...nope, no issues at all. Can see everything perfectly and even using "the claw" my hand didn't hurt. Not trying to shit on 3U here, I'm sure it's amazing, but man...the (original/non-XL) 3DS really doesn't seem to be made for MH. Which is a shame because I love the 3DS and I love MH. =/

I don't know if you've played Phantasy Star Online (Blue Burst is free to download/play), but I handle the camera pretty much the same way as in that game. Just pointing the character in the same direction as you want the camera, and tapping 'L' to recenter. I'm pretty much doing that all the time when I play, if that helps you.

The demo is fun! But it doesn't help me at all. I want the game even more than before now, wtf.

went for the light bowgun 1st, but I failed miserably. Guess I have to give up on that, even though I was pretty good with it in the original tri.

Went for sword/Shield next, was pretty easy with it, took a while because my damage output was pretty weak. pretty boring weapon.

Tried the greatsword next, beat the monster just in time, but that weapon doesn't fit my playing style at all.

Went to the dual swords... and holy shit. This seems to be the perfect weapon for me. High agility, easy dodging, rage mode. Exactily what I was looking for. killed the bunny way under 10 minutes. I kinda feel like a newb for choosing the presumably easiest weapontype, and I am sure it will be well prevelant online.

Any other weapon types I should try out? I hate blocking, I never use it, I only dodge, so weapons with blocking are a waste of buttons as far as me playing with them goes.

My exact impression when I played the PSP version. I wish they would make the gamplay more fluid and easier to get into for first timers.

Played a bit on Wii U. Bear thing is fun although the armor they give you is all sorts of OP. Picture crispness is fantastic. Framerate is kinda spotty though, especially whenever you move the camera, which is 90% of the time. Sorta got used to it after (lol) a few minutes.

Fucking plesioth in a demo though? It's like they try to turn people off of the game. He opened up the fight by air-sucking me into his hip check as I was standing behind him. Twice. Ended up making him limp like a drunk hooker but time ran out (was playing w/ LS). Underwater combat still sucks balls. Plesi looks sexy out in the sun. His moves seem pretty awkward to me underwater though. I'll go back to beating his ass eventually but for now I'll stick to messing with different weapons on lagombi.

The armor they give you with LS is super sex. Some sort of guild set? Really dislike (what I assume is) the azure los set and GS. What is this like fairy wings on my back wtf. GS looks like ass imo (well... it's just a pallette swap of ian poison path) but seemed to hit pretty hard.

Looking forward to giving it a spin on 3DS.

You were born for the long sword. Also might wanna try hammer.

People who complain about zones must never have had a fight go horribly awry and had to do an oh-shit-dodge out of a zone just to have the space and time to use a pot and eat some meat.

Sure the structure of the worlds in Monster Hunter in all likelihood arose out of technical limitations but at the same time it makes each area a defined arena where the combat takes place in and each surrounding zone a place you can escape to and catch your breath in.

Lagoombi down, Plesioth is next. Time to see what this asshole's new hitboxes are like.

What weapons are available in the demo?

All of them are there for you to try.

A few minutes of swinging around my sword, and seeing the nice animations, and environments and I was sold. I tried MH Tri, and Freedom unite a few years back, but didn't really get into them. I guess I just didn't get it back then. The heavy, and strict movement seems deliberate rather than a result of poor design. Everything seems like its designed to work with that element, and it adds some satisfying meatiness to the game. Camera control seemed a little awkward at first, but I got used to tapping the L button to center it pretty quickly.

Hah.

First try at the demo:

"Why am I so slow with my weapon out?"
"The hell? is it running away?"
"I just got.. destroyed.. cant evade at all"

Second try

"Ohhhh It's just like a fighting game. Is he open for an attack? Do you have enough time?"

I actually get this game now. Day one

How does the game control on a 3DS without the circle pad pro? I have horrible memories of the PSP Monster Hunters due to the claw. I heard they have lock on targetting (or something similar) now but does it actually work well on the one analog stick?

After playing both the 3ds and Wii U demo, I think it's safe to say ill be getting this for the 3ds.

Yes, the game looks amazing on the Wii U and the two analog sticks are a huge plus, but the 3ds version is still good, it's portable, and it's cheaper.
