Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

My takeaways:

-Why does this only run at 30fps. Assets are low quality, and it's a port of a Wii game.
-Why are the levels segmented into barren zones? Why can't it be one open area?
-It feels pretty janky.

My complaints are mostly mechanical/technical . The actual fights are pretty awesome, and you guys were right about the variety. I just don't get why the environments aren't more dynamic and connected.

So exactly which monsters and weapon setups do we have in the demo? Did someone do a detailed list somewhere?

The Plesioth destroyed me, fighting underwater isn't as fun. It's also the one time I missed a second analog.

The 3DS is more modern, but not flat out more powerful than the Wii. Most Wii counterparts to games loook/run better from what I've seen, and the Wii version was only 30 fps too.

Segmented areas plays into the "monster tracking" and "running away" aspects. You begin to be thankful for them when you use it to your advantage.

The connected segments is just the way it's always been. It's weird/annoying at first but after a while it becomes a part of the game.

You'll find yourself up against a monster that just will not give you even 5 seconds to breath and drink a potion so you'll pop out to the next area and take a breather while you pop some drinks or cook up a meat real quick. But then the tell-tale sound or icon will pop up on the map followed by an earth-shaking roar and you'll know the monster followed you in.

It's kind of part of the feel and will be a big change if they remove it in 4.

The wii game also took a dump framerate-wise fairly often, epsecially online with multiple monsters. Slideshow territory in certain areas.

Hmm this demo's gonna be tough to play if it's your first time. I can't really understand why the quest limit is so short. It's usually 50 minutes. I guess they don't want people spending hours playing the demo. Oh well it shouldn't take too long to adapt if you don't immediately give up.

Because it's running on basically the same engine, with the same assets as the game that came out in 2004.

Capcom innovation yo

Area splitting is an integral part of the game. It will be obvious as you play the game more.

Look at the armor and weapons you get, they're really good.

First-timer here. Some questions.

I just played the demo(3DS), took the easy quest. Ran out of time but I think I was really close. He was drooling and falling over a lot.

Can I lock on to enemies? I just kinda ran around for a few minutes until I found him, then it was too hectic to stop and really play with the controls? I sure hope there's lock on, though. Not having it without dual analog would be a real killer.

Overall that was pretty cool, especially after having become a big fan of the Souls games. I can see where this is similar in ways. What I don't like is the constant loading between areas. :-/ Are all the MH games like this? No seamless world?

Lagombi is so easy, lol.

And you can't even carve in the demo! MEH

I need to go know, but I already love this game so much. Very impressive too, only Capgod.

Just beat Lagombi barely under the time limit with my trusty hammer. Some of the buttons are different than I would like, but overall impressed, getting both versions for sure.\

Edit: No one will ever "get" Monster Hunter based on a demo, it takes a big time investment to even know if you like the game. There are so many aspects to it that a demo will never do it justice.

Ok so is this game running at native 1080p on the Wii U? Looks razor sharp on my tv. The 3DS version looks real nice in 3D mode. So far I'm digging it, I may double down and buy it on both the Wii U and 3DS.

Yeah, that means he is dying.

You can see where the monster is if you look at your map, when you find it, look at the bottom screen and press the monster icon on the bottom right. Now you can press L to recenter the camera. It's really useful, but not a proper lock-on.

I only have about 2 hours clock in the MH universe playing the PSP version (unite?) and I just got too frustrated with the damn controls. This should be interesting.

Is there anyway to tell how much life a monster has left? I was fighting the easy monster and it was acting like it was almost dead, then it just goes beast mode and destroys me.

Playing the 3DS demo now and I'm already hating it. You think they would include an Options menu in the demo for those of us who don't know the controls instead of having to go to the fucking manual while play is suspended

I imagine it went something like this:

Usually, you have to look at the Monster's reactions. If it starts looking sloppy and drooling, that means you're "close."

Just tap the L button to change your camera to face the monster. There is no constant lock-on since you need to attack different areas. Just tap the touch screen on the bottom right.

It's split into areas. All Monster Hunter games are like that. It is an integral part of the game, the more you play, the more you will realize it. Say you want to use a potion, but the monster is like going on a rampage. Then you can go to a different area and you will be safe.

Lol, I keep on repLaying first mission, trying to beat my best time of defeating the monster. I have lots of fun with it and it makes me want to buy this game.

Second mission on the other hand doesn't sell me on this game. I can't lure the monster out of the water, fighting in water is a pain for me, and I can't defeat it.

I want to buy this game, but I'm afraid of experiences like the second one. Maybe I should just leave the 2nd mission alone in the demo?

Can't see a damn thing (the small text is especially painful) and my left hand hurt after one hunt. =/ So I guess for me it's either buy an XL or pass on the game, and regrettably the former isn't going to happen any time soon. Ah well. :( Big MH fan too, so this sucks.

Yeah, that wasn't a beginner-friendly demo at all. Doesn't seem like Capcom is really interesting in catering to newcomers, which is strange considering they could really grow that market outside of Japan.

No lock on, though. What the hell? Is this a common complaint about the series? Is it really not necessary?

So played a bit on my 3DS considering it finished downloading way before the WiiU (Still at 50%). Regular 3DS, adult hands, my hand is so sore, need a 3DSXL stat.

After coming back after many years... i still suck. Any tips on not sucking at monhun?

Can't even beat the bunny in time. I'm not getting when in my attack animations can I dodge (been using hammer).

Nearly dead monsters start limping and will try to retreat to their lair and sleep. This is a good time to capture, in the full game. Drooling and sluggish movement is related to stamina loss, which you cause by tiring out the monster via regular fighting or smacking it in the face with a blunt instrument. It's independent from health loss and a tired monster isn't necessarily close to dying. Stamina loss can be cancelled by the monster eating something or entering rage mode, bear in mind that 'something' can include YOU.

Other than that all you have to go on is their behavior and your own experience. Diablos for example will enter rage mode more and more often as its health drops, until it's permanently in SUPERSONIC FURY.

Are you talking 3DS or Wii U? Wii U really feels like 30.

From what I understand Wii U targets 45 but struggles to reach it often, meaning the average is around 35 or so I think.

Yes, Wii U version is 1080p.

The Wii U version is fucking good.

Seriously considering getting this version. I had MHTri on the Wii but I gave up on it fairly quickly.

Anyone know what Plesioth's weak spots are? Wiki says nothing, and I have never fought this thing before.

His legs are the best thing to focus on while he's on land; he's not the most stable monster when on his hindquarters.

It's nice to know that Plesioth is still an asshole after all these years, but now you can roll out of the hip check.

Usually, you have to look at the Monster's reactions. If it starts looking sloppy and drooling, that means you're "close."
If it's drooling that just means it's low on stamina and may run off to go find something to eat. When it limps is when it's near death.
No lock on, though. What the hell? Is this a common complaint about the series? Is it really not necessary?
It's a common complaint by newcomers but the lack of lock on is a bit of a sacred cow for devotees. Often you will not want lock on because you need more precision in your attacks. One of the MH clones, God Eater, has lock on and I really found it useless there.

What's the word on the Wii U Monster Hunter bundle? Some sites say it's coming to NA but I can't find anywhere to order it
