Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

How does the game control on a 3DS without the circle pad pro? I have horrible memories of the PSP Monster Hunters due to the claw. I heard they have lock on targetting (or something similar) now but does it actually work well on the one analog stick?

There is also a virtual D-Pad at the right side of the touch screen. It works better than excpected.

Hah.

First try at the demo:

"Why am I so slow with my weapon out?"
"The hell? is it running away?"
"I just got.. destroyed.. cant evade at all"

Second try

"Ohhhh It's just like a fighting game. Is he open for an attack? Do you have enough time?"

I actually get this game now. Day one

Nice.

I think that it plays well on the 3DS. The lock-on is a huge plus.

So, I just got out of my midterm (Ohio State), and this prick on the sidewalk goes, "Do you have a minute for human rights?" I'm thinking, fuck no, I have to get home and play Monster Hunter.

Hurry up bus go fasterrrrrrr.

Virtual d-pad on the right-side of the touchscreen for camera adjustments. Along with the shoulder button for focusing in the direction you're facing.

Second go at the rabbit thing was much, much more successful. Actually got him! I've been using just the L-Button as my camera control and it's serviceable. The Wii-U version seems like a more ideal choice, but I can see the 3DS version being fine.

Learning more about the gunlance just made me way better with it. When I stopped trying to use it as a distance weapon and more of working shots into larger stab combos, I was way more successful with it. Still, I think I may end up using a faster weapon or maybe even one of the pure ranged ones. Not sure yet. I'll need to give them a go. Still, I'm enjoying MH much more than I expected I would.

Playing without CPP makes it feel very awkward to play. It seems like I'll skip since I ain't buying that.

I didn't know how it worked so I was worried.
Basically you select target on the touch screen then when you tap L the camera turns to the monster.

Just beat the bunny with a great sword on 3DS. Never used the virtual d-pad. All target button. I don't think I need a CPP at all. The target button is much faster than swinging the camera around with a stick.

Right to the heart of it. Nice work.

It's also why potions aren't instant. You have to time almost everything when fighting.

Downloading the Wii U demo as I type, this is the first time i've turned on my gamepad in about three weeks.......

Download speeds are faster than I remember around 500kb a second (while i'm downloading something on my netbook too)

Is there anyway to tell how much life a monster has left? I was fighting the easy monster and it was acting like it was almost dead, then it just goes beast mode and destroys me.

Monsters will limp when they're close to death and drool when they're low on stamina and likely to run away to take a nap :-)

That was easier than I thought, almost first time playing a Monster Hunter, liking what I have played so far.
First quest with the daggers-like weapons and second with that long sword/katana.
Can't wait for the release, I'll try the other weapons too.

I love posts like these. Reminds of the time when I ran three miles to GameStop and back to get Super Mario Galaxy 2 at launch. Sidewalk pedestrians were getting all angry when I was weaving and dodging between them on the way back, I felt like screaming "I have the new Mario Galaxy in my book-bag!!!"... But I don't think they would have understood.

Anyways, just downloaded the demo on WiiU, will give it a try when I take my study-break.

How is it not remotely true? It's a Wii game with a few effects thrown on.

I don't think it looks bad, but you seem to have taken the complete opposite stance of who you quoted, which is still a bit extreme imo :P

Well I mean it doesn't look superb, but I wouldn't say it looks bad. It sure as hell looks better than Monster Hunter tri- does when played on the Wii U, thats for sure.

Just tried the rabbit quest with the longsword dude and the bow. I have absolutely no clues what I'm doiing lol. Is there a way to know how much health the monster have? With the bow how can I switch between different type of amo? Even if I choose the sleep or power amo type they all seem to have the same effect... And is there a way to adjust the camera to not move by increment? Would control better if it was smooth.

The wii u version doesn't look to good from my perspective, but still is a great game.

As a beginner and having played 3 weapons (dual sword, great sword and sword+shield) i have to say that the faster weapon seems to be easier in this case dual sword.

It seemed so overpowered and i managed to kill the boss in less than ten minutes. I just went kaioken(the character turned red by pressing L button while attacking) and spammed the x and a buttons while dodging occasionaly, also there were times where the monster would be paralyzed. The great sword was very strong but very difficult to use.

I think the game is fun but i wish it had 2 player local multiplayer on wii u.

To switch coatings hit X+A when you have the bow drawn.

Grats to you. I had my BIL play, and he just mashed attack until he died and then complained that the game was cheap.

I tried out some of the new weapons (new to me, maybe not to the series). I don't know how I feel about the hunting horn and bow. I'd like to see an expert play with those to see how it's done. I stuck with my tried and true great sword in the end.

Plesioth is scary to me. They way he looks and that cackling sound he makes... ewww. If that thing really existed in nature, fuck.

Game looks lovely in HD.

Looking at the manual is helpful to find out how to use each type of weapon. Don't go in blindly lol.

First time playing the series, got the Wii U demo.

Are all characters this slow when attacking?

Different weapons have different speeds. Dual Swords are the fastest.

i am beating the easy one, beat it with hammer, sns, dual swords and hunting horn and failed with bow and gunlance, I still dont understand how the horn works,
looks wonderful, the auto camera works great. I though the demo did not supported ccpro I will look for it.

Well I got Lagombi on the first try with the long sword, then I switched to dual swords and it was much much faster but I'm a bit scared to go for Plesioth now.

Game looks nice in 1080p, I've enjoyed what I played a lot so far, learning the monsters attacks and when to move in or run for your life proves to be very interesting indeed.

First time Monster Hunter player and I think I'm convinced on picking up the game, will play a bit more and try out the other weapons first, and report back.

You'll gain intuition for approximate monster health over time. When it gets close to dying it'll start limping and running away.

The Sleep status effect is something that procs after you deal enough sleep damage to it. You'll know it happens when the music suddenly stops. When it falls asleep, the next attack deals 3x damage to it. I recommend bombing its face; just remember not to hit the monster itself when you set off the bomb!

The camera moving in increments is fucking stupid and is an artifact of the original MH that will go away in MH4.

Try out dual sword it's very fast also seemed very easy.

I tried Great Sword first, wasted most of the time trying to figure out the controls and running around the map. Eventually found the monster (on easy) by accident and started fighting, killed me once, and then timed out.

Second time I chose another character, cannot really read what weapon was, it was the woman with the fire/explosive long sword and the asian hat. Its impossible to read the text with my shitty TV, so I just wing it. Did a lot better anyway, but it killed me once and then I stopped playing.

Finally killed Lagombi (am rubbish!) With gunlance.
Tons of fun and I can see how good this could be starting up from the beginning and getting to know your own items/strategies.
