Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

Does anyone know what the full size game is on the JP eShop (Wii U version)? I really don't want to buy a hard drive for this as the only full games I'm gonna be buying on the eShop are MH3/4 and Animal Crossing Wii U.

I tried this for the first time ever last night and after failing miserably the first couple of attempts I managed to get the hang of it and really started having fun. Switch Axe is awesome.

It was kinda frustrating to not be able to check our Status and the bonuses given by our equipment on the demo... Oh well. 4 weeks to go until the game is out.

Also, I guess I won't be able to convince a friend to join me on MH3U: he's full of preconceived ideas about the game, and doesn't seem to want to give it a try (which, honestly, is driving me nuts, but there's nothing I can do about it). He'd rather spend his playing time on "The War Z" (despite everything surrounding said game, and despite the fact that he recognizes this game to be frustrating as hell). Oh well, I can still convince his wife-to-be :3

Also : The Lagombi is a rabbit ?!

Lago = Lagomorph = Rabbit + (then make it a cool name or something I think = mbi)

Lovely demo.
I really think that the Lagombi is the right choice for a demo.
Killed it both on Wii U and 3DS within 15 minutes, with the Long Sword.
On the Wii U good control with the right analog (and very polished graphic), but I really liked the L "lockon" system on the 3DS (I know that's present also in the Wii U version but yesterday I tested it on the 3DS) and the 3D graphic is really great.
The lack of offtv will push me to the 3DS version as first purchase, then later on I'll pick up also the Wii U one (transferring the saves)

The monster focus helps a lot underwater. First time in the water on the demo and I instantly felt like some of the disorientation of full 3D movement was gone with the target cam.

Then again I really like going at it underwater unlike some people. In doses.

Having said that I ran out of time. Long sword, not my main tool at any time, but I felt the reach and speed would help me. Will see if I can get this guy with a more familiar weapon. He wasn't too scary underwater although I played a bit recklessly and gorged on potions as a result.

I am here browsing MH Wiki at work and all the memories of playing Tri online with friends the summer it came out are rushing back. I am gonna take some time off to play.

I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS GAME, IT MAKES ME FEEL LIKE A SCHOOLBOY AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!

YES FUCKS YES

sorry

Played the demo, and yes its fun.

But (of course)

1. no lock on?
2. the boss monsters are either crafty or the ai is annoying as hell, because they keep fight near the entrance to the zone and when they attack i either knock them in the other zone or i end up running in the other zone.
3.those cats keep getting in my way, do my slices hurt them?
i met some wild cats and i cant kill those they keep going under ground.
4.dual wield does that power up really do more dmg?
5.how can i tell the im close to killing the big bad other than his icon turning red?

3DS démo here, will look to the Wii U one later:
My god, I get my ass kicked (again!). "easy" demo that tell me to hunt a Lagi...thing. I found out a polar elefant of some kind and he kills me. My bullet doesn't even seems to hurt him!

Hints? I played the badass sniper rifle.

Controls are really hard, but eventually will get used to it of course.

1. no
2. tip: you don't follow the monster, the monster will follow you.
3. no, they are mainly for support role/distractions for monsters
4. yes
5. pretty sure that the icon turning red indicates that the monster has seen you (I could be wrong). The way you know its close to death is if it starts limping and goes to another area.

1. As pointed out a big part of MH is hitting specific parts of the monster, aiming for heads, tails, bellies, etc. A lock on would ruin this, and also not be possible because of the way the weapons work, the time it takes to pull off moves etc.

The monster target camera is the closest you'll get. Press the monsteri con and then you can focus the camera on the monster with L.

2. Typical, but can be exploited for your own gain as well. When they've moved from one zone to another they may linger near the entrance for a while.

3. Your helpers? They're supposed to help you. They can faint and return from monster attacks. Cats other places can steal things from you.
4. Sure

5. The icon doesn't mean that. You can tell he's close to death when he's limping (usually away, to find a place to rest).

3DS démo here, will look to the Wii U one later:

One suggestion is not starting out with a ranged weapon as the controls can be harder to get used to in the middle of a fight. Try one of the swords. Or just spend a lot of time with the weapon, watch youtube video tutorials etc.

any tip on how to focus my slices then?
so far long sword is nice because it was wild slashes.
but i can only imagine how hard this is going to be using the bow

thanks for the tips.

I played the demo on both the Wii U and the 3DS. I don't get it, the game seems really boring and slow to me. Maybe I'm playing it wrong but, I couldn't get myself into this game.

Try the dual blades, they are the most "quick" or "dynamic" of the whole bunch. It's also a game that requires a little bit of patience, totally opposite from this generation's usual hand-holding insta-gratification experiences.

I don't have enough room on my SD card...damn...I am pretty sure you can but do you guys know if I delete Crimson Shroud, can I re download it later with no charge and do I have to do something special with the save,or if I delete the Etrian Odyssey 4 demo before the game comes out will it see my save so I can keep playing from where I left out in the demo...?

Downloaded the WiiU demo and just ran around a bit. Will actually sit down with it today and see how it goes. A lot of talk about it being the most user friendly MH yet and great if you had sort of given up on the series earlier on (like I did)

Okay so, fighting the actual big monster is exciting. Everything leading up to that seems boring, especially murdering innocent animals who don't attack you... it looks nice though, and I imagine the full game is a much deeper experience overall, and the character customization must be a big part of it. Can't imagine I'll pick it up at launch, but perhaps at some point after when it's inevitably dropped in price a bit (Don't see it selling a load in the UK).

I'm not sure, but I think if you delete a game from your sd card, it'll delete your save data. So be careful.

The demo looks pretty awesome on the 3DS XL. Like Revelations, if 3D isn't on it uses some sort of screen smoothing AA. I wish all 3DS titles would have this feature. Specially when you play games on an XL. Some games look really jaggy, and its really an eyesore.

I don't like how it doesn't have WiFi play though, cause I won't be owning a Wii U for a few years I'm sure.

IDK I dont get whats so special about these games, tried both demos last night. Just dont see any appeal. Why are these so popular?

Challenge of facing strong enemies and mastering the controls/gameplay and Multiplayer.

Tried the great sword, sure it's slow but I liked how it forced me to time my attack and I killed that monster faster than with the dual sword.
The more I play that demo, the more I like Monster Hunter :)

Downloaded both versions.

My first time playing a MH game.

Demos explains fuck all.

I have no fucking clue how to play this correctly.

So yeah, so far I'm hating this unless I can learn how to play.

mastering the triple charge and when best to use it against every monster is a challenge but once you nail it, its the fastest way to beat practically every monster in the game.

read through the thread there is lots of advise, plus make use of the digital manual

Played the demo yesterday beated giant rabbit (don't remember the name)

Then i fought the second one (hard one) thats looks like a Legiacrus (however it's spelled)
And then i remembered what i hated from MHtri on Wii (Played for like 400h +) , Freaking underwater combat !

Also, area are pretty much the same ?

So yeah i think i'l skip this one ...

Really a shame that MH4 is only on 3DS i would have enjoyed a brand new MH game but i don't like claw control :P unless it is compatible with the analog add-on for 3ds ?

The games are about strategizing. You try to find a monster's weaknesses and openings and carefully attack when the moment is right. You've got to decide up the right weapon for the job and work your way towards crafting it by hunting, gathering, fishing, mining and so on. When you finnally get the materials you need or take down the monster, it can be very gratifying.

Multiplayer is also how most prefer to play. It requires great cooperation, but if you work together you can pull off some pretty amazing combos and feats.

I may have been doing it wrong too. But like for example, the "easy" monster you have to track down, I kept hitting and hitting and hitting and hitting, then he just ran to a different section of the map.

Like, I love, LOVE, the souls series, but this did nothing for me. Was I doing it wrong?

Water Combat is back in? Yuck :S

After finishing the demo again a few times on the Wii U all I'm wondering is:
-Why are the L and R buttons used and the ZL and ZR left without any function. It's so fucking uncomfortable in comparison and makes no sense.
-Why is the frame rate so damn choppy? It's actually annoying because it feels worse.

Because of those two reasons I'm actually playing better on the 3DS, even without a second analog stick/pad. The fuck?

Yeah, as a demo this is incredibly shit. Doesn't even begin to explain the game and its systems and as a newbie I was incredibly lost.

Eventually beat the easy mission with the hammer.

Nope, just follow it to the area it fled to and keep on fighting. That meant it was already weak and it was a matter of a little bit more damage.

I approve.

Really, some people have a point: this demo explains nothing at all, not even hinting at what to do, how to do it, and where to find explanations about the controls and the purpose of the game. You can't be less user-friendly than that.

I'm not new to MH but moving around on the 3DS and manipulating the camera is a pain. At least on the PSP I could claw the camera. I cannot take out the damn bunny for the life of me cause of it.

I think I might just wait til I get a WiiU or something and get it on that.

Press home button, the middle button is the manual, its there for every game, I don't see how it isn't known by people who own a 3DS?

did you try the virtual d-pad? I am very comfortable with that. Then i tried the monster focus and that works really well too. The game would benefit from a much more free controlling camera, but sometimes you just need to work with what you're given with and try not to rely on having a perfectly centered camera all the time (at least thats how i adjusted)

Considering this is a demo they could explain this in game without having to resort to the manual, like almost every other demo.

I downloaded both demos and I like what I played so far :D I'm definitely going to get the Wii-U version.

For the Wii-U version I tried the sword and shield. Died twice and ended up failing the quest.

On the 3DS version, I used the (forgot name) great longsword? I did die once but this time I completed the quest.

I definitely have to learn a lot more, but it was an enjoyable experience for me. Well done MonsterHunterGaf, I'm in.

Well, that's interesting. Indeed I didn't know it existed. I withdraw part of my preceding post. I mean, I agree with Esura : even Castlevania's demo explained the commands. There's nothing which hint to the existence of this manual.

That's what I tried, the virtual D-pad. The time I spent trying to adjust the camera left me open to it's ice slide attack which always puts it on my blind side so its hard to dodge too.

Are you using lock on?

I've said the same things a couple times.

The version that plays and performs the best, is the one with no online

A friend just woke me up to tell me he sucks at the game.
Let me offer a FAQ for the OP before I go:

Q: I have no idea what I'm doing. How do I learn my moves?
Both demos have a digital manual. For the 3DS button, check on the home menu. For the Wii U, press the home key.

Q: What's a good weapon to start off with? My attacks are too slow!
Dual Swords and Long Sword are what you're looking for. You aren't locked into your weapon choice, so you can experiment once you've learned the enemy.

Q: How do I lock on?
There isn't any true lock on. However, when you go to an area where the monster is present, click their icon on the touch screen. Now pressing L will center the camera on the monster instead of centering behind the player.

Q: How do I know if I'm doing damage?
If you're hitting the monster, you should be doing damage.
Monster Hunter is largely about observation. If the monster staggers from the hit, if they limp away, if they start getting faster and stronger, you're probably doing alright.

Q: Why am I stuck to the floor after I attack?
In Monster Hunter, you can't attack recklessly if you want to succeed. Get in a couple of hits, then dodge away.
You can end most attacking animations early by using the B button.

Q: Can I kill the monster faster?
Sure. Making use of your items will speed things up a lot. Try to lure a monster into a trap and drop bombs beside it.
If your weapon seems to stop for a split second when you hit, you've hit a weak spot. Try to focus your attacks there.

Q: Are their only two attacks?
Melee weapons have several attacks. X, Y, X+Y, and R all perform different actions. You can also sometimes perform different actions as part of a combo, by while holding the stick down while pressing the button, or by holding down the button. Look at the digital manual for details.

Q: Why can't I do X with the touchpad? Why can't the shoulder buttons do X?
Maybe they can! You can customize the touchscreen for both versions if the full game. This allows you to access items at a touch, resize the touchscreen D-pad, or remove the HUD from your screen completely. You can also customize the function of the ZL and ZR buttons with the Wii U's controllers.

Q: Is there a quest timer in the full version?
The timer is generally set for 50 minutes. You should have some time to gather items or cook meat as well as complete your objective.
There are also quests that eliminate the time limit. You can also freely visit the Deserted Island map (seen in the demo's Hard mission) without any fear of a time limit or being defeated.

Q: Is there any more to this game?
In the full game, you can customize most things. You can forge and upgrade your weapons and armour. You can gather items and choose the ones you want. Through your equipment, you can also equip special skills.

Q: Is this whole game just about fighting one monster?
The bulk of the game's missions are like this, but not all. Hunting multiple monsters and gathering items are also common objectives. In later missions, powerful monsters may appear; you must decide whether to fight them or flee.
Much of the game also consists of creating and customizing your equipment.

Q: I suck at this game!
Don't worry about it. Practice makes perfect.

That's what I tried, the virtual D-pad. The time I spent trying to adjust the camera left me open to it's ice slide attack which always puts it on my blind side so its hard to dodge too.

I started with the wii version using nunchuck, so I got really adjusted to the d-pad camera, but the refocus option is really nice now as it lets me keep an eye on the monsters position whether i'm running away from it or whatever. Whenever I play MH i always adjust the vertical field of the camera so its angled one level downward than the default. Then for the rest of the game 99% of the time I never adjust my vertical. I dunno, i think adjust the camera just kinda becomes something you get used to

but anyway, try the Refocus option, its really helpful

This game really needs a camera lock on. Not an attack lock on or anything, but just a goddamn camera lock on.

And I wish I could change direction when attack.

The reason the game doesn't have a constant lock on or the ability to change direction mid attack is because this game rewards skilled play, and punishes recklessness. If you make an error and whiff an attack, chances are you better stop attacking and reposition yourself or you will get hit. Not to mention a lock-on would break the bowgun / bow weapons
