Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

I'm pretty much sold on this game. A few questions.

I realize a lot of the game is harvesting materials for better weapons/gear, be it from gathering, mining, killing monsters, whatever. I like that. What I'm wondering is do I pretty much have to have a wiki in front of me to know what to gather or will the game tell me the "ingredients" for things?

You'll need a wiki. Once you've obtained at least one of each of the items you need, the item will appear in the shop and you'll be able to see how many of each material you have left to get, but before you happen to get those materials the game doesn't tell you what's needed to craft stuff. Right now the best option we have is to run this wiki through Google Translate: http://mh3g.trigwiki.jp/

Also, about how many of each weapon are there, and how many armor sets? Like, I assume there are quite a lot of things to craft, for a completionist.

You don't need a wiki in front of you all the time. In game, you'll have a decent idea of what you are doing and can easily check your wiki before/after your sessions to help you along the way.

When you collect a new piece of loot from any monster, big or small, the smithy will tell you want new types of armors/weapons can be forged with that item. You will also be told what other items you need and the amounts.

As far as combining items, you will quickly learn the basic combinations and then stock your check with basic ingredients and basic combinations. Anytime you combine two unique items for a currently unknown result and are successful, the game will then tell you the result and the combination success rate. The success rate is also something that can be increased via buffs or other items.

There are a shit load of armor sets. Plus, melee and bowgun armor sets are different as they provide relevant armor skills. Armor can also be "gemmed in" with gems/runes that add skill points to your build.

It will take you a very, very long time to forge all weapons and armor consider their amount, the melee/bowgun versions, and the low drop rates for certain rare loot.

I've never really used a wiki at all for mh. It might take me a bit longer to learn things, but the game is actually pretty good at teaching you how to do everything. There are a few things about it that can be kind of obtuse, though, like what parts of monsters drop which items, which items you need in order to harvest certain things, and how the farm works.

Eh, everyone does when learning a new game. And it looks like you got it down quickly so that's good.

I've played 300 hours of Tri. It was different there. And I just come from several action games that have attack on Y. It just sucks, but I'll get used to it.
 
Question about the tunneling for the 3DS.

So, is it that, if ONE person has a Wii-U and hosts a game, then 3 other people with 3DS, on their own wifi without a wii-u, can connect to that person?
 
Learning how to use the Lance which I never got around to in Tri. I like it. I've mastered taking down the Lagombi, time to try taking down ol'Plessi.

At first playing with the Gamepad was awkward but after enough time it feels good. It does strange switching back and forth between CCPro and the GPad though.

I don't believe any form of "tunneling" exists in this game (correct me if I'm wrong please.)

3DS = local multiplayer only with up to 4 3DS systems
Wii U = Online multiplayer with other Wii U users OR local multiplayer with up to 3 3DS systems

I don't believe you can connect a 3DS to a Wii U and then use the Wii U to bring both online. You can simply replace one of the 4 3DS systems for local multiplayer with a Wii U.

There is something like PS3 Ad-Hoc party coming out that lets you play the 3DS one online. I made a thread about it. It should be in my post history.

Did not know that. Good to hear, though if I'm in range of my Wii U I'll probably be using it for the superior controls unless I just need that offscreen play.

Yeah hunts in the full games are usually 50 minutes. In the past MH games with plessy he would jump in the water, where you couldn't follow, swim around for a bit, and spit at you endlessly. Sometimes it felt like he would never come back out on his own.

Oh, I thought Plessy was new. Is it usually a better strategy to just not dive into the water after him? And he'll eventually come out?

It's probably better to dive in after him. His underwater move set is less annoying than his move set on land, unless you're using a bow.

Depends on how good you are underwater. I found it much easier to dodge nearly all his attacks when he is underwater. If he isn't alerted, you can even fish him out with a frog giving you nearly 10 seconds of free hits while he flops around
 
Just played the 3DS demo and loved it (this was my first MH experience, despite having bought the Wii one ages ago).

I have a question, the 20 minute timer, is that just a demo thing?

Can't have you playing the demo 30 times for 50 minutes each!

Yes. Most quests have 50 minute time limits. Except for very unique quests and epic monster types, that limit will never come into play.

Unless someone is truly awful at the game, but at the same time careful enough not to die or run out of potions.
 
Is there going to be a strategy guide release? I'm assuming there isn't since I can't find any information, but I think it would be really helpful and it would have nice art.

Is the Circle Pad Pro XL really only available in Japan? ;_;

I thought it has a more pixelated look in the PSP version while the 3DS version looks much smoother. I would take the 3DS graphics with the PSP/Vita screen size though. :(

The 3DS XL screen is that size.
 
But you can play through the demo as many times as you'd like, its only limited to 30 boot-ups. Sleep mode ftw!
Does going into miiverse end up using a demo activation to return to the game? I'm just going to leave it on the demo to avoid using up any precious activations, even though I miss miiverse already.

Accessing Miiverse through the Home Menu doesn't terminate your play session. Therefore, it shouldn't force you to start up the game again and use another activation. Just be careful not to hit the Close Software button on the Home Menu.
 
I love the target toggle. I'm assuming that multiple icons show there for you to select when there's two, maybe three monsters in the zone with you. Could have used that in Tri many times, especially the nowhere-to-hide arena quests.

Yeah...that sucked.

Ran out of Sonic Bombs? You'd have to wait on his ass to hop out of the water. Sometimes, he REALLY didn't wanna come out.

Even then, Sonic Bombs didn't always work in getting him out.

Awesome, thanks. Still a bit bummed that there even is a time limit, but I'm not realistically going to have that much free time per session anyway.

Plesioth was in the earlier games. MHFU had 58 large monsters, while Tri had 18. For some reason with Tri they decided to start fresh with all new monsters (except for three returning favorites, Rathalos, Rathian, and Diablos.) MHP3 (JP only) had 40 and MH3U bumps it back up to 51. We're still missing some favorites from the previous games though, some of which seem to be returning in MH4.

With Capcom recycling monsters what are the differences between games? Area you encounter them in/move set? Not trying to be a smart ass here. I just know nothing about the series.

Most new games of the generation have brand new monsters. The reusing of old monsters most of the time it to fill out the roster. Then in the first upgrade version the new monsters get revamped versions. The old monsters get adjusted some what, but nothing to right home about.

managed to down plesioth in just over 10 minutes on my last run

are there any support coatings in the actual game like the attack/defense buff and healing bullets for bowgun? or are the coatings all damage/status effect oriented?

I've only personally played MHFU and Tri, but the different games tend to have different hub towns and storylines and new or different areas. Also depending on the monster roster, etc they have different types of armor and weapons available to craft.

I was honestly a little puzzled as to why MH3U went back to Moga Village instead of using the village from Portable 3rd, but as I said I've only played the two games so far. MH3U does seem a lot like an expansion to Tri from what I've seen, but I've only played the demo so I don't know how different the mission/story flow is.

Weapon types have also been added/removed/re-added across the span of multiple games.

Honestly if you're just getting into MH and own a PSP or Vita then you could probably get plenty of enjoyment out of both MH3U and MHFU, because they really are two completely different games in the same series.
 
Wow, the hunting horn has really impressed me. It's not half as daunting as it seems. If you're confident you should try it out.

X, A, and X+A attacks add notes of different colours (even if they don't hit). If they combine properly, you get a little tone and a scroll appears. R does another attack that exchanges the notes for a buff, and you can combo with another R attack to extend the same buff further.

It can also stun enemies like a hammer and poison them. Surprisingly, the damage is good on top of all that.

X -> X = Movement up or other boosts
X -> A -> X = Very small healing (less than a potion)
X -> X+A -> X+A = Defense up
X -> Y -> X+A = Infinite stamina
 
Another question about the series, are you guys ok knowing that with every release you're basically playing the same thing again from zero? I dont want to sound rude, I dont know much about the game, but from the outside that seems to be the case.

What I'm trying to get at with the previous question is, (setting aside technical aspects) would it be desirable to transfer a saved game to each new release? Say like pokemon BW2 did where the story would change a bit, you get to tranfer your old critters, etc. If so, what data would you like to keep from game to game? (E.g. Equipment? Scores ans ststistics? )
