Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

Another question about the series, are you guys ok knowing that with every release you're basically playing the same thing again from zero? I dont want to sound rude, I dont know much about the game, but from the outside that seems to be the case.

What I'm trying to get at with the previous question is, (setting aside technical aspects) would it be desirable to transfer a saved game to each new release? Say like pokemon BW2 did where the story would change a bit, you get to tranfer your old critters, etc. If so, what data would you like to keep from game to game? (E.g. Equipment? Scores ans ststistics? )

If you trade over high level Pokemon to every new Pokemon game as soon as you can and then just blow through the story, you're only cheating yourself out of gameplay. All BW2 did was add some little easter eggs if you linked your past game, it didn't start you out with your high level Pokemon against level 5s. I'd feel much the same with MH. They're not the same game, they're a new game in the same series with the same mechanics and differing monsters/settings/quests/etc. So given the option I think I would actually opt not to transfer my Tri save to MH3U, because I'd just be trivializing half of the game. I don't want to kill Great Jaggi in a few minutes in MH3U until I've earned that right by crafting up a nice gear set. And I'm certainly not paying $100 for both versions of the game just to start at the end or blow through the game with no challenge.

For the record, this is more of a fighting game type of expansion than a traditional one. Some existing things change, especially armour skills.

For example, the skills for Lagiacrus armour in Tri were Olympic Swimmer, Element Atk Up, Razor Sharp, Status Atk Down.
In Ultimate the skills for the same armour are Focus, Stinger, CurrentRes (Lo), Status Atk Down.

Might be hard to understand if you don't know what the skills do.

man get this shit. I fuckin download mh3u, first time I've played wii u in months, and it fucykin freezes up at the load screen and I never get to play it. wtf

Spent some more time with it last night (WiiU version).

Played as dual sword, killed the rabbit!

Tried great sword, got it limping but didn't make it...

Tried that lance with a gun class (forgot it's name!), had no clue what I was doing, but once again, I killed the rabbit!

So bloody rewarding once you see it go down. This game is fantastic.

Wow, the hunting horn has really impressed me. It's not half as daunting as it seems. If you're confident you should try it out.

X, A, and X+A attacks add notes of different colours (even if they don't hit). If they combine properly, you get a little tone and a scroll appears. R does another attack that exchanges the notes for a buff, and you can combo with another R attack to extend the same buff further.

It can also stun enemies like a hammer and poison them. Surprisingly, the damage is good on top of all that.

X -> X = Movement up or other boosts
X -> A -> X = Very small healing (less than a potion)
X -> X+A -> X+A = Defense up
X -> Y -> X+A = Infinite stamina

Hunting Horn was met with an immediate "Screw that" when I saw it in the manual. I tried it out just now and I love it. Once you get the note patterns down it becomes really fun trying to not only hit the monster but positioning yourself to hit the monster with the correct attacks in the correct order then getting in a position where you connect when you hit the "play" button while not getting run over during the long animation.

Definitely like it, all the raw blunt force that I love about hammers but with stat bonuses.

Wow the difference between that and 3ds >.>
I dont understand why 3ds version looks so dull colour wise

Do you have your 3DS set to a high brightness level with Power Save turned off? I imagine those things might factor into how vivid the color looks. But in the end the game is bound to look better on Wii U unless you just really like 3D.

This has been my first Monster Hunter experience with the 3DS demo. Starting out I have done terribly and have insulted myself and the series as well. I really am enjoying it so far though and look forward to its release! 29 more demo play throughs to hone my skills!

Man I do not see what the attraction is to this game.

Tried the demo to see what the fuss is about, and maaaaaaaan it was horrid. Forget the visuals which to me looked like high res PS2 visuals, but its just so damned clunky and static.

What am I missing here?

The satisfaction of downing a huge monster and using its body parts to forge yourself a kickass set of armor.

Really like the digital D pad for the 3DS! work well once after you get use to it. This game is kind of blurry though. Plessy hit box wasn't as bad as the psp version which were crazy.

I orignially thought circle pro would be a must but the digital d pad really works.

I attempted the demo on 3DS a few days ago - got slaughtered by both Lambi and Plesi. I ran out of time, too.

After reading more of this thread and deciding not to let the game get the better if me - I set out to take down the furball asshole today. I equipped a long sword and was slaughtered, yet again.

I decided, that weapon is slow....so I rearmed myself with the dual blades from my first attempts. This time I figured out whetstones, L camera centering on the monster and using potion stuff. Determined, I was able to fell him without death and with time to spare. Felt quite good!

It's my first ever experience with MH, don't know how much I will play the game, but it'll be a worthy addition to my library.

I watched the Tri3G trailer from the 3DS reveal and there seem to be some nasty, giant monsters who have lots of AOE attacks - will I hate the game later solo? Will I even be able to fell those monstrous, towering beasts solo?

I'm excited and nervous that the game will be a fun challenge, but insurmountable at some point....

I like the game more than I did initially, but still on the fence

Look up videos on YouTube of 4 person groups hunting some monsters. That or some previous solo hunts linked earlier in this thread. There is skill behind mastering those moves and an enormous thrill in fighting these bosses with an ever increasing arsenal.

Try the hammer for Plessy... smash his webby feet and once you get him down, pound his soft delicious belly.

Solo requires playing more defensively. More hit and run than what I think most gamers are use too (unless you are amazing or with a specific build) With your two companion pals though, it is much much easier to play solo because they provide you with distractions that give you a much easier time in approaching the monster without being hit. With time, you grow to know patterns and when to give up on a strike, roll away, sheath, then find a new opening.

Also, with the farm mechanic, it is much easier to gather the necessary items to survive and upgrade your stuff. The towering bosses have their weaknesses, whether it be traps or a specific weapon element, that will make Bringing them down easier than you think if you just plan ahead. There is no one weapon or armor set that is best for everything like other rpgs

Played the Wii U version, god I was rusty after playing easy mode versions of Monster Hunter combat like Dark Souls and Tera. Ain't no i-frames here, son. XD

Still, downed the rabbit-bear dude with Twin Blades. Gonna try it with my good old Greatsword and Gunlance later.

I forgot to ask about this earlier but it just re-occurred to me a little while ago while getting my feel back for bowgunning: they apparently removed the zoom feature while in scope mode for the bowguns? At least, I can't seem to find any indication of it anyway, even on the Wii U version. A bit odd if true, but I suppose if they couldn't find a way to quickly let you zoom in or out on the 3DS, they likely wouldn't have re-added it for Wii U. I'll definitely miss that feature if I do happen to dig back into bowguns for Ultimate.

WHA!?

Where did you read that?

Neither is Dark Souls. And that game doesn't have backwards ass controls.

The camera is terrible and the player must use the stick to aid it. So fumble between the stick and the x/a button when there are 4 perfectly good triggers. Makes sense.
Please, almost every action game out there has a similar set up. Are all those equally terrible? Dark souls has attacks on the triggers because it is one of a very few games out there that in designed for two hand set ups and skills like elder scrolls.

Anyway, they added camera control to ZL and ZR option in the launch update.

You don't say?

That doesn't fix the fact they mapped the primary inputs on the secondary buttons. Would you map ADS/Shoot on LT/RT? Bayonetta's Witch-time to the RT? Skyrim's attacks to RB?

Exactly, it's fucking stupid

We were just talking about how the ATTACK button isnt mapped to the triggers. Why would you want an attack mapped to triggers in an Third-person action game?

Also, yes I would map ADS/Shoot to LT/RT. I don't get it.

Oooohhh Wii U then. Yeah, it's because the right stick doesn't really get used much, just use L to focus on the boss (tap the little boss icon on the touch screen when your in the same zone as the boss).

Monster Hunter definitely has weird controls, but I would say the same thing about Demon/Dark souls. Both are weird, but both work for the game and what your trying to do.

Honestly though, ALL games should just let you customize everything and be done with it.

I don't like them, I just think they work well enough. Haha.

I understand what you want, but i persobally think putting the attacks on the triggers changes how the game would play and basically make it a completely different game, just like adding moving while shooting completely changed resident evil. But again that all just personal opinion and is basically irrelevant, haha.

Also I think someone said that ZR and ZL can be used to turn the camera on the retail game, which I think would work out well.

I think your question initially was legitimate, it was just the 'lol what a joke' part that was unnessary and got people a little worked up and defensive.

Look, if you guys like the controls that's cool. I was just wondering if there will be an option in the final game. I like everything else about the game and it was pretty fun but I just don't see the point in fumbling back and forth when there's 4 triggers (two of which do nothing!) and 2 clicker sticks (would be perfect for camera centering). I guess this argument is going in circles, so I'll (hopefully) leave it at that.

I can't say with 100% certainty but I believe stuff like button prompts are remappable in the final version of the game. Just bear in mind that there are still too many actions you need to be able to perform that you won't be able to just leave your right thumb on the camera and ignore the face buttons completely. Between items, dodging, and needing three buttons for attacks, something's gotta give.
Personally I've never had much of a problem managing between camera control and attacking (since typically if you're in a good position and at the right time to attack, you likely have the camera trained on your target anyway), but I certainly can understand the nature of the complaint.

Since the series is still based on it's PS2 and PSP roots. The controls are still based off of those controllers. Ya for rookies I can see it seeming bothersome. Still overall like most games since the 6th generation. It's another hurdle we must over come to experience the developers vision.

In the end add it to list of things rookies want in Monster Hunter. Along with a life bar for monsters.

Really getting back into my groove with my favorite weapons from Tri, the Hammer and the Longsword. Now i just need to get my Lance counter timing down again...

This game is a good example of how a second screen in a game can be great. Having all your items a touch away while you can still run around, using the virtual dpad as replacement for a second stick , and of course an on screen map because my sense of direction in games is awful.

It will be quite a bit better in the final game, though. Quick combos and a better item selection than the one available on the touch screen now (if you choose to customize it that way).

My 3DS log tells me I've played this demo for 9 hours but it hasn't made the wait for the full game that much easier.

Thanks for the help. I'm sorry if I sounded pedantic, but I really have no experience in the series and even though I liked the demo, I still feel I'm taking a big leap of faith here.

From your comments I see now that the games do change, and it wouldn't make sense to let the player import stats and weapons even at endgame because as you say the attributes of weapons can change.

Really enjoying the demos, am even surprised at how well the 3ds version controlled. I'll still be getting the WiiU version first though.

Am currently deliberating over whether to begin with Dual Sword or the Bow. Or perhaps the Switch Axe? I was a Long Sword and later, Switch Axe user in Tri and really enjoyed using these returning weapons in the demo.... decisions, decisions.

How the heck does Plesioth's tail come off...

Damm thing keeps dying before the tail comes off even though im focusing as many of my hits as possible on his tail -_-

I've even started fishing it out and trapping it as well when it's fatigued but that infernal tail won't cut.

Also any idea what the abilities on the Switch Axe armor are because it feels like the stamina specifically for that build drains a lot faster than the other weapon builds.

I figured the demo doesn't do a very good job of explaining how to play the game, especially not for people new to the series, so I put together a video series showing the basics of all the weapons, as well as some general gameplay tips.

You can check out all the videos below:

- MH3U Tutorial Hub
- Gameplay Basics
- Sword and Shield
- Dual Swords
- Great Sword
- Long Sword
- Hammer
- Lance
- There are more videos to come (currently uploading...)

Feel free to add them to the OP if you find them helpful.

Watched the long sword vid, it is very good. The demo does do a rubbish job of explaining things.

Killed the wombat.

Got quite far with the dragon, but then lost. How do you dive in the water? I just locked on and tried to hit the damn thing as best I could...

My problem with Plesioth is that he's constantly making adjustments to himself in the water... based on your own adjustments. No matter how much you dive, he'll always dive juuusssst a little further down so that you end up whacking his shell. Quite annoying.

Lagombi is an amazingly fun fight though. Loving Dual Swords.

I end up spending most of my time standing next to the monster and attacking the air because I dont get lined up correctly even with the targetting

I like the idea of the game but ive finished both DmC and metal gear rising in the last couple of weeks and i think thats hurting me here. The combat is very deliberate and I get frustrated with it

but Ive got 2 friends buying the wii u version so I might as well to play with them

Plesioth is kicking my ass :(

Any tips for a noob?

I'm doing dual swords, how can i Fish the thing like I've seen on some videos?

Thanks!

EDIT: I JUST BEAT THE BITCH!!!!

Man feels GOOD :)
