Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate: Review Thread

Took a test this time. Ordered majoras mask from my usual ShopTo as I didn't want to take a risk with it arriving later, and ordered MH4U from the game collection, which a I've been hearing good stuff about, and I wasn't so fussed if it came later.

As it turned out, MH4U came first today! 2 days early! Pretty good for a first order. Now I really wish I ordered majoras mask as I REALLY want to play that now!

Even though I don't plan to play this until the start of the next month I ended up ordering it... Damn it, I'm weak...

Btw, can anyone post comparison pictures of this on 3DS/New 3DS? I have the original 3DS... Should I be jealous of New 3DS users?

Actually, Gamekult (french) did that, scoring the game a 7 and outright calling some textures ugly in one paragraph (though the main corpus of the review says the game is amazing).

I haven't read most of the reviews but yeah, I expected this to be an issue. It's actually an issue for me, but I guess it all comes to the choice of Capcom to release this as a 3DS game. The game already seems captivating and full of content and "ugly textures" are certainly a really small problem.

I've been getting Game Collection stuff on Wednesdays for a little while now, they're definitely the new ShopTo!

Haaa, the tension is killing me. Cannot wait to jump in. Lurking around and refreshing my order status every 15 minutes. I really hope that they are going to ship my copy of MH4U today...

P.S.: First post and afraid of my English probably being rusty, ahaha...

Thanks! They're not that much better but still noticeable. I guess I should start preparing for a New 3DS...

Oh, and welcome to GAF. :)

So no i-frames when rolling, and you have to commit to each attack, since once initiated, most attacks can't be canceled and will play out their animation unless interrupted by a monster's attack.

If each monster is only vulnerable to certain types of strikes, to certain places on their body, how do you come to learn what works? Trial and error? Consulting a wiki?

When you land a hit on a weak spot it feels 'meatier', there will be a brief kind of pause as it hits. Hard to explain but easy to understand once you see it. There are also blood effects that are much larger when you hit weak points. It gets tricky when weakpoints change after you cause enough damage to break a part off - some get more vulnerable in that location, some get less. For example Gravios has a hard plate on its chest you can destroy if you hit it enough, and doing so reveals its soft vulnerable underbits.

Trial and error and wikis work too. Quick references like this are usually available pretty fast.

Bowguns are a bit more complicated since they have their own damage type, and it's harder to tell when you're hitting a weak spot. They did make it a lot easier in recent games though, if you land a nice solid Pierce 2 on a monster it's got this super satisfying sound effect.

Question. I never played Monster Hunter before and I just tried out the demo. Do past Monster Games load each zone just after a few steps..?

Whoa. I had no idea there was that big of a difference. I was on the fence on getting a new 3DS, but I think this sealed the deal for me. Goodbye, terrible Circle Pad Pro!

So I've never played a MH game before...but I tried the demo for this one. It seemed cool, but I got really turned off by how long it took to kill something. I was using dual blades but it was just standing there mashing one button....is it any better than that?

So I'm not to the point where I can get a N3DS quite yet. I have a Zelda XL system that I'd like to play this game on. Do you guys think it's perfectly playable as is or should I consider buying a CPP from Nintendo for $20? I do also have Revelations so that's one additional game I think I could use with it.

It's perfectly playable with the virtual dpad and monster lock on imo. You could always try out the demo and see for yourself how it feels.

I think it's all up to you, I played MH3U about 500 hours and never got a need for a CPP on the O3DS XL, and it plays fine without it, but may be you find it better with the CPP

I suggest that you first try the game without the CPP and then after sometime you can decide if you really want it or not

I think it's perfectly playable without the CPP. Try the demo, should be enough to see if you get comfortable enough with the controls.

Personally, I stopped using my CPP for both MH3U and RE Revelations. In the case of Monster Hunter, you have a digital d-pad that works very well, a camera lock-on for the boss, and standard camera repositioning with L. The MH games as we know them today were designed around a single analog stick so its not like you're being asked to give up the 2nd stick of a FPS or something like that. Give it a try because its not as bad as people make it out to be. If all else fails, get a CPP.

Thanks guys, appreciate the input. I'm planning to get the demo tonight when I'm home. Meant to get it a while back but keep getting side tracked with other stuff. Now I have a big reason to do it. Was going to order the CPP right now to have it quickly but I think I'm gonna hold off.

You can't customize the virtual d-pad in the demo, so if it doesn't quite feel right in the demo, keep in mind that the full game allows you to fully customize the position and proportions of the d-pad.

Respectfully: the CPP makes things a shitton easier. Is it possible to play without a second stick? sure! It's also possible to run a marathon in high heels, but why put yourself through that?

The Nub on the N3DS works surprisingly well!

If you are getting one itll do the job managing the camera with ease

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate could well be Capcom’s greatest opportunity for the franchise to truly blossom here in the West. In Japan the series is a juggernaut, with a number of the Monster Hunter titles sitting alongside entries in the Final Fantasy, Mario and Pokemon franchises in the all-time best selling games in their home nation.

Missing a space for "textures aren't compelling." And I love the "how many iguanas do I have to kill" space.

This definitely needs to occupy the centre space.

C'mon mang, some of us DS fans were into MonHun before it was even cool! Give us some credit!

Should I wait to get this game until I get a New3DS? I don't have a CPP anymore since I upgraded to XL

No, the demo was perfectly playable on an OG 3DS. Target cam alleviates most camera issues fairly quickly, although it might be worth waiting if you want to use primarily ranged weapons, since they require finer camera control.
