Oh man, that sounds great! Really excited to play the PC version.

Bout time there was a next gen monster hunter!

Ready to melt my gpu.

All the info points to this being a great rework of the series. Im glad its no longer hostage to one platform and dated hardware and we can see the series progress alongside generations.

Im glad its hub based and not fully open world, at least that will retain the mission structure slightly whilst allowing free exploration of gathering. Hopefully it also means gathering quests are dead. Fuck gathering 10 pieces of coal. Hopefully it means time limits are dead too.

I'd like to know how many big monster variations they are planning for launch. My worst fear is they will gate new monster DLC every few months but with mission structure it wouldn't really work just having 1 new monster and 1 quest to kill it.

I've been stuck playing MHFU for years now and the local coop only thing has been harder to deal with as my friends have aged and moved on from when we all played this at Uni. One lives an hour away, one in London and one in Hong Kong. Its impossible for me to play the game how "its meant to be played". The game needed to move away from being a portable franchise if it wanted the west. Handhelds aren't as popular in the west and multiplayer popularity is over the internet. Im glad a party system has been implemented too, I don't really care for randoms helping me out. Its all about playing with my friends.

Has their been any rumour as to how long the PC version is delayed? If its just a short period of time I can wait. I'd rather have 60fps and no online subscription fee to play this.

Your character no longer stops when drinking a potion!!!!!!!

https://twitter.com/aevanko/status/874884547623759872

The stopping never bothered me. It was the infuriating manly arm pump that rustled my jimmies as a raging Tigrex chased your ass down for the next attack!

Nothing more annoying than a fucking Giaprey interrupting a 3 tier GS charge though.

Uhh this worries me more than moving while healing

(also the part where it says certain monsters require you to lure another monster into their territory to lure them out, which is not helping my fear that the entire tracking concept idea is going to be a superfluous layer of busywork that feels cool and immersive the first time and then gets old fast)

It also says that the damage numbers were because they actually considered health bars.

DSIII also gave you way less Estus to start out with and enemies hit much harder and more aggressively. It and Bloodborne were designed to be much faster games.

That's great. Now let's see how it's implemented in this game. :]

I am very, very interested to see if this graphical upgrade alters any future titles in the series, especially with the retirement (eventually) of the 3DS and moving to Switch with Unreal 4 support. Otherwise I am keen to grab this on PC and play that sweet, sweet Monster Hunter grind.

We literally have no idea how this iteration is going to be designed around that change or how it even works yet.

Pretty much confirms this is MH5
You can change gear in base camp now

I don't see why it wouldn't be, honestly. The last main title was X & XX, right? Why it would even need to be labeled '5' to be the 'Real' MH5?

Thinking about other series names--Assassin's Creed Unity is very obviously AC5 even if it doesn't have a number on it. Why? Because it's the next major release in a similar gameplay style to the game that had 4 on it, and was their release for current-gen platforms that year. Syndicate is AC6, and Origins is AC7, for all intents and purposes. Now, you can argue that Rogue is AC5, but that is more of a Brotherhood or Revelations- style game, a supplement to the larger story of AC3 with gameplay elements from AC4.

In any case, none of them are spin-offs, so need to get hung up on numbers in evaluating this game.

*Hunters can change weapons and armor midhunt by going to the Base Camp.
**This feature was added due to there usually being multiple large monsters in an area and from each having a different strength or weakness

As a HBG user, I like this idea for killing off the preys and dromes with melee, then switching up when the big ones show up.

I'm gonna have to wait and see how the game is balanced before I form an opinion on moving while healing. As long as it hinders your movement or locks you out of a dodge, the risk factor could be maintained.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Swapping weapons mid-mission sounds great for farming crests (or chins) and tails.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
How do the Monster Hunter games compare to the Soulsborne games in terms of gameplay and difficulty? I never played both (I'm picking them up in the future) but they look similar in terms of killing difficult monsters.

I never said otherwise. I merely noted that Dark Souls had to make significant changes to healing and combat balance to accomodate the change, it wasn't a "free" quality of life pure upgrade.

If that's the case, I'll just find a different community to enjoy the game with.
Why. half the people complaining have never been in a monster hunter OT before. Half the people saying "it's not a spin off etc" have also never posted in an OT.
The outrage stuff is unlikely to make it to the OT, whilst actuall discussion about the changes should.

Good to see you outside the Nioh thread. Yeah, I can only hope that the OT will be fine. The MonHunGAF discord is at least a decent place right now :).

Hard to say. MH games vary wildly in difficulty between each release. You can have easy ones and tougher ones, but just like Soulsborne I think the entire experience becomes manageable when you've become accustomed to its mechanics.

kinda sounds like they want to slow down the game again.
With every new iteration since at least 3gu, every new game also came with an increase in speed. 4gu felt faster than its predecessor, and so did generations. With this, it seems like they try to go back to basics again. I mean, stuff like tracking and stealth wasn't even a foot mark in the more recent titles...
Seems more like a step back by adding some unnecessary bloat, especially if you like fast paced arcady feel of 4gu and generations

So Scout Flies are essentially paintballs that are integrated more organically within the game world.

They seem more versatile than paintballs, pointing to usable items and such. Not a problem and so far one of the less worrying changes (effect is still pretty bleh but it's not like the paintball effect is anything special)

Monster Hunter is both easier/more forgiving but harder to "get it" at the beginning (the movesets are less intuitive). There's 3 difficulty ranks in MH, low-rank, high-rank and G-rank. Most Souls games to me in difficulty are about high-rank for a MH equivalent.

I think in a seamless map where you're likely to be running from monsters chasing you through all kinds of places then it obviously makes sense to allow you to move and drink simultaneously.

That sounds a lot more reassuring. Looking forward to it then. I'm fine with changing armours and weapons mid-hunt. I've had multiple instances where I forgot about some elemental business, or an invading monster messed up my plans. It also makes things more flexible for people who specialise in blunt weapons. With the lack of timers, this seems like a decent idea. The only change I'm not liking is the quick-gathering. This seems like QoL tweak that works against the things the game tries to teach you. Early on in the games, you learn a valuable lesson that when you take an action. It's not a huge deal, but it goes a bit against the animation priority philosophy.

Originally, it was going to be called "Monster Hunter 5", but the development team really liked the name, "World"
Flashbacks to Peace Walker here. That game was also an unofficial 5, right up until the moment it wasn't. Funny enough, that's another project Kaname Fujioka was involved in.

I updated the OP with the information from Dengeki and Watch Impress, but will be heading out for a while in a bit.

So it's basically another Peace Walker situation, I feel that they were pushed to not use 5, no?
It depends if you read that as "They want it to be more accessible to new audiences." (see Assassin's Creed, Wolfenstein, Call of Duty, Dragon Age, Doom, Tomb Raider, ...) or "We're too concerned about relevance to give this a number." (Peace Walker).

except for G-rank (the endgame) Monster Hunter games are "easier" and more forgiving. Solo G-Rank is beyond anything in the Souls-games though.

Amazing that it started 4 years ago, that MT framework engine still doing work, hopefully it works out for them and it sells a ton in the West.

I think to compensate for moving and drinking you should heal less, because you'll be spilling it all over :p

I was thinking that myself. If you are running away like mad, the heal would be less. Makes sense and adds a real world reason to move/stay still to heal.

But people told me MH5 will come to Switch/3DS?

What we know so far is MHXX is coming to Switch. I think there's definitely more than a chance the Switch will get another MH (or a scaled down version of World), but now it seems the team is focused on this one.

The worse it sells on PCBOXStation, the higher the chance the Switch will get the next chapter of the series.

I really can't wait for this! I'm a huge fan of the series and everything here sounds amazing. Still hope MHXX makes it to switch somehow though :)

Eh I wouldn't want to take that angle. Knowing Capcom if this blows up in their face they could shelve the series and then nobody has any MonHun.

Reading this again, I'm surprised there's no mention of season passes. You'd think a DLC model would be in place given the western focus.

HYPED. The only thing I fear is that seeing this is a brand new build from the ground up for next gen game, it may lack content. Like MH Tri, amazing game but really lacking content.

Hopefully some crossplay with XB and PC owners. No point mentioning PS4. It ain't happening.

Looking forward to seeing what their DLC plans are for the future. Nice to see some crossover items appear.

What you say is right but can you look at the trailer and think it will fail that badly? I think there's a high chance it sells more than any other MH. The game looks great and comments over the internet are largely positive.

I really appreciate Capcom taking the risk. I've been waiting for this game for literally 10 years.

They probably don't want to color the perception of the game considering it's at least 8 months off from release.

Also what's this I heard about damage numbers and the bosses having no visible health bars?

I started out in Tri on the Wii and Ultimate on the Wii-U then onto MH4 on 3DS. Despite its flaws, I love me some MH. Maybe not a diehard fan but I am super happy it's finally migrating to home consoles again. It's a series that really needs fresh blood pumped into it, not just in terms of gameplay changes but a larger community outside of the traditional.

Well, they never had bars in the first place but the numbers are new. Hopefully a toggle but I can see the pros and cons for both.

I think calling it Monster Hunter World is for series safety. If it bombs the bad reception/sales won't affect the numbered title.

I can see them making an official Monster Hunter 5 that's more traditional if this game tanks.

Ew. Anything to make the game more accessible to new players I guess. I will just pretend playing the old game and stand still while drinking potion.

But why? It was an annoying mechanic. Its not like it will affect top tier players anyway. Most the speedrun vids you see on YT are people blowing themselves up to 10% health and never getting hit so why would they care. It just adds a bit of leniency to new players.

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure X or Generations or whatever were considered spin-offs. Which is why they have over the top supers and arts and stuff, things that would be out of place in mainline games.
