Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection Announced (Digital Eclipse)

Yes, super impressed, didn't think it'd be this big of a collection, weird that greed didn't get the better of them, haven't bought any of their new games past MKX on account of the bland ugly characters, but I have noticed they desperately try to extract post-sale money from people with each iteration.

Digital Eclipse has been delivering a lot of content rich collections lately, and this one doesn't seem any different. I was pretty underwhelmed by their initial announcement, but they have added quite a few new titles to the mix. This is the first time Digital Eclipse has ever emulated the Sega 8-bit platforms (Game Gear), no MKII for the Game Gear is a bit of a bummer.. but at least the first one is there. Nice touch.

I wonder why UMK3 for Genesis isn't included. I liked that version. Same with MK4 on N64.

I was about to type the same thing... as I always felt the Genesis version was the better of the two in some ways... I feel like all the Genesis/ MD ports should be there... The Genesis was the main 16-bit machine for Mortal Kombat in my eyes... even though MKII on the SNES was a good port. Maybe Digital Eclipse does not have N64 emulation down yet? In the above video they said this is their first in-house emulators for the Game Gear and 32x systems.

They did say that there will be more game announcements. So this list is not complete yet.

I mean, afaik that's just a downgraded version compared to the SNES version, with no unique features.
same with MK4 on N64.

more curious omissions are MK Trilogy on N64, since it has unique changes as well as a different hidden character, and MK Gold, since that is an expanded version of MK4

That's not a good reason to not include it as all the console ports are downgraded version of the arcades.

Just fix the A.I. in Mortal Kombat II and we're good.
Easily beatable with the 'jump towards, jump away' trick

yeah, but the issue is that that's not how a fighting game should play out 🤣

but the thing is, MK is and always was a bad fighting game. it's the cheap shitty, but kinda charming, B movie of the fighting game scene.
and many people like it for that reason, so fixing that would be counterproductive.

if you start trying to "fix" Mortal Kombat... where do you even stop? you'd have to almost remake all the games 🤣 there's more things wrong than right with all MK games up until like 9.

Say what you want about 'Console Wars', but these guys do a great job breaking down the differences between the Genesis and the SNES versions of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3:

There is no cut and dry better version of this port, as the SNES and Genesis both have their strengths and weaknesses as consoles, the Genesis game will always suffer from lack on on screen colours, the SNES game has 'squashed'' sprites and has from a lower resolution screen. SNES game generally has better sound effects and voice samples... arguably the Genesis/ MD game has better music in most cases. In this case the Genesis game has more content overall.

Especially MK 1 and MKII, which were ported by Probe Entertainment, a uses the Krystalis sound driver. Which gives the music a unique sound for that hardware, and has really great 'bell' sounds and preclusion. Mortal Kombat 3, Ultimate and Trilogy were handled by Sculptured Software and they used the GEMS driver for the later Genesis ports.

It would be neat if they could get a port of the Sega Saturn Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. It is weird how Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 never made it to the PS1... But the Saturn never got a port of MK3 due to Sony publishing and having exclusivity over that version on 5th gen consoles. But Saturn Emulation is not in the cards yet for Digital Eclipse. They do use their own in-house emulators, if I am not mistaken.

I would love to see some of the N64 games... but again... maybe they are not included because the emulators are not in place? This is one of those things where Nintendo could release Trilogy and MK4 on the N64 via NSO around the same time frame. If they wanted to.

I would like to see MK Gold... but perhaps Sega Dreamcast emulation is not in the cards either?

I think since Digital Eclipse has Playstation 1 emulation in the bag, I would like to see Mythologies and its good and badness. I always liked how Mythologies looked, with its digitized sprites and polygon backdrops, and the cheesy FMV's. But could DE fix the glaring control issues? This is more like a inclusion for curiosities sake.

PS2 version is leaps and bounds better.

It has already been confirmed that Mortal Kombat Trilogy for the PS1 will have no loading times, and fixed Shang Tsung morphs. They claim that more games will be announced soon. This is honestly looking to be a really killer kollection of Mortal Kombat games. They are even including the notorious GBA Mortal Kombat Advance. 32x port is there. No announcement of MK Gold for the Dreamcast.
wtf when did the gba game news come out

MK3 was my first game on PSX and I played the shit out of it. I got good with just about every character, really loved that game. Also bought MKT and spend countless hours trying to get The Pit II to work only to find out years later the pit fatality wasn't in the game. I can't wait for this to come out, if only for the nostalgia.

Thanks for sharing the video. Very interesting. I never knew the Genesis version was so stacked content-wise.

And LOL at them saying Genesis had better sound.

I think there could be a good argument made for the music in the Genesis/ MD versions of the game. But when it comes to actual audio samples and sound effects, I would lean more towards the SNES version. I think Mortal Kombat 1 and even Mortal Kombat 2 has better and overall more iconic music on the Genesis hardware. Those were ported by Probe and use their own custom audio driver: Krystalis .

Mortal Kombat 3 for both consoles were done by Sculptured Software. They did do a really good job on the Genesis port. The Genesis game uses the GEMS audio driver instead of Krystalis, and I do thing that quite a few of the SNES audio tracks are overall better. Looking this up, Avalanche Software did the ports for UMK3 for both systems, but they were built from the Sculptured Software source codes.
