Most insidious bug in a console game?

I remember somehow getting a level 650 Snorlax out of that glitch, maybe by catching missingno, I don't really remember. It was pretty sweet though. My buddy would get a level 600 Mew, way better than Snorlax! My game only got Snorlax's. I think it was from catching missingno, did anyone else ever try this?

My two, in addition to MissingNo., were a level 183 Golduck, and a level 212 Snorlax.

yeah KOTOR had one of the worst bugs ever.

near the beginning you play a certain part... the no brainer character to use is the one that has invisibility...

but if you hit the control panel at the end of that area while still being invisible...

the game will play fine up until no more than what?! 5 minutes from the end of the game?! then boom! it gets stuck!

man that -sucked-

There was a pretty good thread about this on The Next Level forums a while back. Click here to read it.

Here's what I said back at that time (July 2003):

The worst I've seen in a recent game that was funny was an instance in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 for PlayStation 2. I did a jump off a ramp, got massive air, and remained suspended in the air up near the roof. For about three minutes straight, I just kept performing all kinds of tricks, until I finally "unstuck" myself and eventually landed for a combo that was worth several billion points. I chose not to save it to my memory card, because I didn't consider that as accomplishing a "real" combo.

The worst I've seen in a recent game that was not funny involves Iron Soldier 3 for NUON. There's a strange bug in the game that causes it to lock up randomly, at any time. Sometimes, you can play for hours with no problem. Other times, it might lock up 20 minutes into the mission, or perhaps one minute into the mission, or even on the opening FMV intro right after you boot the machine. There's no predictable pattern for triggering it--like I said, it can happen at any time. It was so severe that VM Labs recalled the game a day or two after its release (supposedly to fix the bug), only to leak a few of those same copies back out to a handful of online retailers a couple of months later. Eventually, they gave most of the remaining discs away for free (without box or manual) through NUON-Dome. It's a crying shame, because it's a great game that you're afraid to actually play because you don't know when the bug will occur. Thankfully, I've also got the PlayStation version, which doesn't look quite as good, but plays better due to much better control (using the Dual Shock) and memory card save (as opposed to passwords on NUON). On the bright side, since the NUON version is so rare, it's very valuable as a collectible--even more so if you've got the box and manual like I do!

I had a 137 Cloyster I think.

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within had way too many bugs to list...
I concur.

Can't say I was too pleased when I nearly reached the end of the game and discovered that I could not actually continue due to a bug caused by earlier actions. The game is loaded with all sorts of bugs (both minor and fatal) and should not have been released as it was...

Double Dragon

The NES version's bugs were legendary: the instant-7-hearts glitch, the item drop glitch, the wall climbing glitch, the flying barrel glitch, and my personal favorite, the skip-the-2nd-bossfight-entirely glitch.

Jade Empire had a number of bugs that could crop up if played on certain versions of the Xbox. I played it on a 1.0 Xbox and had all kinds of sound effect glitches, but the worst was when I got the game into an unsolvable state in the capital city. I tried going back to previous saves (up to one at the beginning of that chapter, almost three and a half hours earlier), but either the condition that caused the bug was before that chapter, or it was something I kept triggering because it was a necessary aspect of completing the chapter. I got on their online support forum (a support forum for a console game... sad) and there were pages upon pages of people complaining about my issue and similar issues. I never did finish that game because of that. Shades of KOTOR for xbox, definately. Seems the Bioware designs fun and interesting Xbox games, but doesn't have the resources necessary to debug them properly.

The Viewtiful Joe memory card killer is probably the worst on record, as the effects are not limited to just the game the bug originated from. That's some amazing work right there.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance had a bad one that would cause Janos Audron's heart to not appear in Raziel's inventory even though he had picked it up, causing a very late quest to be impossible to finish. I never had it happen, but a friend did and it pretty much ruined the game for him. Doubly sucks because he's a fan of the series. I don't remember if it was ever determined exactly what caused it to happen.

I had a creepy one happen in KotOR on the Xbox. At one point it went to a cutscene on the Ebon Hawk and everyone's faces were gone. The textures disappeared from the faces and all that was left were the lidless eyeballs and moving mouths with teeth in them floating above the characters' clothing. The whole scene played out like that, then everything was back to normal once I went through the next load screen. Yeesh.

7800 Impossible Mission. Ironically, due to a bug, it is impossible to finish.

Ahh yes, the old puzzle piece hidden in the computer terminal bug.

Argh!

At the time, Zelda: OOT's no-sword trick was like the mother of all glitches.. it seemed to open up even more bugs, like being able to fly outside of the game world with the hookshot, among other things.
i was pretty pissed off when I discovered that the bug was fixed in most PAL versions.

btw, didn't Metroid Prime: Echoes have a design error (not really a "bug") where if you did something before doing something else you couldn't progress any further in the game?

First PAL run of Metropolis Street Racer had some awesome bugs.
One of the time trials to win a car (Alfa GTV) had the time set ten seconds to low, so it was impossible to win it. Later in the game you get a cheat to skip the time trials, so the car was available anyway.
There was a Street Race in one of the Championship levels (the one where you win the Opel Speedster / Vauxhall VX220) which had infinite laps so you could never finish it. The trick to doing it was to get a really good start and grab first place quickly, then quit out of the race. Then the game told you that you won the race. Heh.

I also heard about some build in which the daylight system didn't work so it was perpetual night racing on all cities.

There's a bug in Jet Set Radio Future that if you don't run after a character the first time you're supposed to do it... well he disappears and never comes back... and you can never finish the game, since you need him.
Is that the guy at the top of the tower with dragons twisting around it? If so, that happened to me. Intensely annoying it was, too.

For me It was a save spot In GTa vice city(I believe It was In the icecream factory). If you save at that specific location your GTA vC save data becomes corrupt.

My GTA:VC got a bug where the mansion attack mission wouldn't work. The doors into the building didn't open. I had to restart the entire game, since I had saved right before after loading up on weapons.

And I guess the SC3 save corrupt is pretty bad but I haven't had it myself yet.

I believe the PAL version of Croc on the Saturn was impossible to even load without holding A.

Insidious? Maybe not, but certainly bizarre.
The first batch had that, though I recall it being fixed thereafter.

WWF No Mercy save glitch
Oh man that used to piss me off and you could replace it but then you would lose the ability to have your character bleed i still have a faulty cartridge to this day :lol

I am surprised no one has mentioned this yet but the glitch in shenmue which made you keep working at the docks.
Oh man that sucked ass theres one mad way to get through it of which i cant rememeber.

Maybe not the worst, but pretty bad. In GBA Lunar you get all your HP and MP restored if you load a saved game. You can load and save at any point at any time.

No, you pretty much see lvl100+ monsters when you're not seeing Missingno., etc. If you actually manage to catch one and still have your file you can spread it too other people just by linking with them (I should know, some dumb kid had it and linked with me screwing up my Hall of Fame). Though you can use a Rare Candy on it and it'll turn into a Kangaskhan of a random level I think. But if you use a Rare Candy on a lvl 100+ monster it'll simply revert back to lvl 100 (happened to me with my 164 Electrode ... useless thing).

And you don't have to talk to the old man to have monsters appear there, they just show up after you fly/leave that area and go straight to that strip. Makes for a good place to level up on grass type monsters (assuming the last place you were in was the Safari Zone).

And there's one more glitch that relates to that strip. With the Cinnabar Gym locked, walk two tiles to the left from the strip of water to the front door. After you are told it's locked, an old man appears on the roof until you are pushed south. Creepy.

And with all this talk, not one mention of Metroid 1's door bug? Shame ....

it bears to be repeated just because it directly answers the question of the topic. the VJ2 demo is THE most insidious bug in console history because it erased your memory card.. it doesn't get any more insidious with consoles than that (it affects mutliple games).

Myth 2 uninstaller is the most insidious game bug of all time for any platform. It blew away your computer. Doesn't get any more insidious than that.

Also I once encountered a bug in GTA: San Andreas on Xbox where all the saving floppies had disappeared, so I could no longer save my game. No matter what I did (getting in and out of buildings, triggering/ending missions, dying) the floppies didn't want to reappear. I was majorly pissed, seeing as I hadn't saved in a long time.

Donkey Kong Country on SNES can be crashed on demand: Do the cheat that enables the jukebox on the game selection screen. Delete a game, then try to change the playing tune. The screen will go black and the game will freeze.

Another DKC bug: If your following Kong (the inactive one) is over a blasting barrel when you switch characters, it can sometimes get you stuck, since he instantly enters the barrel (when becoming active) and doesn't perform the switching animation.

Cool bug in Top Gear on SNES: If you bump into the finishing line pole at the end of a race, your car will get considered as having crossed the finish line. It then gets bumped back, and crosses the finish line a second time when the AI takes control of it! So you finish in both 1st and 2nd place, and rack up the points of both positions!

That no mercy save glitch pissed me off so much. THQ were aware of the problem but couldnt figure out how to fix it! I must of exchanged that game about 5 times until i gave up and sold it.

Still more fun than smackdown.

Oh and one more.

The PSX port of Grandia was laden with bugs and glitches that were completely overlooked by pretty much everyone ... except for Dragona. Whether it was playing on a PSOne or a PSTwo (with any of the emulation settings) there would be moments where you can purposely trigger a glitch and freeze the entire game (by making the game load something it's not supposed to load and load it forever). In addition to that general sound, music, graphics, colour, anything glitch that were never ironed out.

And might I mention the greatest glitches and bugs of the game: translation and Rapp's NA voice actor. :p

You think Snorlax is bad, my version only gave KangisKhans!

Metroid Prime 2 - Echo door bug in the Fortress stage. God I want my 15 hours or so back.

I sold the game because of that bug, just couldn't stand having it anymore after that happened.
