that's a shame. still i'll check it out for fassbender, he's good enough to turn in something halfway decent in practically anything now.

Rewatching It Happened One Nightwith some people who hadn't seen it made it a bit better. I laughed more and stuff. The scene where they're singing the trapeze song is the best one in the movie btw.

Maybe it's just my not ever having been excited for Light Between Oceans, or maybe it's the rapturous reaction to La La Land at Venice, but I remain pumped for this fall/winter to make up for a downbeat summer. new Reichardt, Park, Jarmusch, Ang Lee, Arnold, Verhoeven, Lonergan, Maren Ade, Villeneuve, Tom Ford, Jeff Nichols. a Ti West western with Ethan Hawke and John Travolta and most importantly Toby Huss. that Barry Jenkins movie Moonlight people are so psyched about. Gonna be a good couple months.

Or for those of us heading to TIFF... a good week and a half. And then a long wait until the new Ti West and Ang Lee flicks reach our neck of the woods in November.

Lucky—who cares about those waits when you'll have seen Toni Erdmann next week.

Most anticipated for rest of year

1. Paterson
2. The Handmaiden
3. Manchester by the Sea
4. Certain Women
5. Elle
6. La La Land
7. Voyage of Time
8. Loving
9. American Honey

Good shit coming out.

I really wanted this shit to be good b....still gonna see it, fuck it

Likewise, I'm still keen to see The Light Between Oceans, despite the apparently lukewarm reception (currently sitting on 59% on RT with 34 reviews) - it's too 'in my wheelhouse' for me not to enjoy it, I think (and I love the source material).

I really should start keeping tabs on my film watching, and perhaps start posting here, too - I lurk and follow these threads religiously, and I'm very grateful that this thread exists, and for all of you that post and form this film-watching community.

I most recently caught the 50th anniversary remaster of My Fair Lady, and it was a joy; the audio shows its age at times, but visually it has scrubbed-up quite nicely. The intermission (how quaint!) provided a timely opportunity to grab a rather fitting cup of tea and a biscuit.

Suicide Squad

It was like:
A ridiculously long introduction, followed by a poorly edited betrayal (Flagg abruptly yells "She bolted!" and the viewer is left thinking "Eh... ok"), followed by Aliens, and finally a battle with Gozer. But what really shocked me is when Mike Lowrey places his gun on his imaginary daughters forehead as he shot the final boss... (a large ring of floating junk). I realized that this movie belongs to that special place in hell dedicated to little gems such as The Spirit, The Phantom, Batman and Robin, and Blade Trinity.

All of this and more at the new MovieGAF blog.

God help us.

Though I did write a big thing one time about Crystal Skull not being as awful as everyone made it out to be.

Watched Money Monster last night.

It is 2/3s a great, taught thriller that shits the bed in the final act and dives into made-for-tv-movie quality climax that feels like something that should have been on the USA Network back in the 90s. Too bad because so much of it is good, particularly the performances, but it writes a check the final act can’t cash.
