Lady Macbeth was significantly more interesting than what i was expecting it to be.
Then again i went in knowing almost nothing about it (and barely remembering the trailer from a year ago or so).
The power dynamics in it are very fluid, which keeps the interest alive; Well played.

I wonder if the trailer music is supposed to be from Jonny Greenwood's score? Would be a pretty big departure form the stuff he has composed for PTA if so.

Don't know if it's out yet in the US but just finished watching Verónica. A horror film by the same director from the REC saga. Nothing scary about the film but the music, pacing, cinematography etc were absolutely fantastic. Definitely one of the best directed films out this year.

According to their Twitter, it's on digital October 3rd, and DVD/Bluray October 17. So still a bit of a wait, unfortunately. It's getting some good mileage in arthouse theatres though, if that is a possible option if you don't want to wait!

I'll check theaters near me, unfortunately the more "arthouse" theater nearby started playing big studio movies on half its screens after the local regal closed down so they don't get as much cool stuff anymore.

That's no fun. It's definitely worth the wait! Maybe it'll randomly pop up, it did in my city last week for a few days!

And Personal Shopper just ended up on Netflix Canada! Wasn't on any lists as upcoming or anything, so that's an awesome surprise if any are in Canada!

Anyone ever seen The Cremaster Cycle? Someone from work recommended it and from the clips I've seen, it seems....challenging.

It's a mixed bag. You can feel Matthew Barney's progression as a filmmaker as you watch it. The parts were made out of order, and the earlier ones are very rough. The last he made, part 3, is fantastic and one of my favourite art films.

I read a review for it and it sounds a hell of a lot more experimental than one would expect out of a one-man avenger story.

also getting comparisons to Taxi Driver too (beyond just the premise of the movie) so this is pretty exciting.

The Little Hours
Hilarious. Didn't try to be as funny as the trailer made it look. When it wanted to make you laugh it made you laugh. But it didn't try to make you the entire movie like most comedies.

The Hitmans Bodygaurd
Enjoyable action comedy. Huge massive intelligence-insulting plot holes, but otherwise enjoyable.

Logan Lucky
Funny at times. Kinda boring. Drags a lot. Final reveal was lame.

Inconvenient Sequel
Don't know what I expected. It was 90 minutes of al gore talking to heads of state and victims of storm surge.

A Ghost Story
Very boring. Almost walked out twice. Super overly long takes where nothing happens. A 45 minute movie stretched into a 90 minute movie.

Actually, it's just a segment of the third (fifth?) film that was made available on DVD, due to some kind of deal that was in place that made it possible to put that out for general consumption. Physical releases of all five films do exist, but the catch is you have to buy one of Barney's original pieces. I always figured that the pirated copies of the films that are floating around were the result of the kid of one of those buyers wanting to be internet famous, or something.

Pretty sweet. A lot more Godzilla action than I was led to believe. When you first see his

moving through the city, I almost laughed at how stupid it looked, then within a few minutes -- without changing at all -- the design became really freaky to look at. Typical Anno. I enjoyed all the bureaucratic satire around the kaiju action, though maybe they didn't need to identify with on-screen captions every room and hallway of every building in Japan. Also loved the Evangelion rip-off music for the score. I think I want a sequel, especially if Anno's at the helm again, but the direction that the final shot hints at feels a little too similar

Free Fire
First 15-20 minutes felt like it was trying too hard, but once everyone starts shooting each other it becomes pretty fun. Sharlto Copley is hilarious in this. Not much to talk about here, just a fun hour-long shootout with some funny performances scattered throughout. Guns sounded pretty good, too.

Alright! I have watched 3 movies since my last post and right on time for the last day for the month (and thread)!

First, my updated (and final) Top Movies of the Month I have seen:

1. Good Time
2. Coraline (if you want to ignore old films just move the following ones up a number!)
3. Baby Driver
4. Annabelle
5. Dunkirk
6. Detroit
7. Atomic Blonde
8. Hitman's Bodyguard

I will know talk about the 3 films I have seen from worst to best.

Detroit

I just came from the theaters 20 minutes ago and...eh. Don't get me wrong, the acting was good and the script I didn't find any flaws. I would say...its a good film However, it felt like a very cold film that was way to long for the plot, yet rushed so many things that needed to be laid out.

For example, the beginning of the film has people immediately rioting and looting without a real reason. Oh, sure the police is obviously bad (and don't get me wrong, while they obviously didn't go full throttle with how horrible they are, they do show how bad the police is) but you don't get to really SEE why. We are just told exposition in the beginning, see like 1 bad thing, then full RIOT!!!! I don't feel with exposition, don't give me that. The whole point of exposition is that it is a means to an end to get the story rolling.

What? I don't understand, why are they so angry? While I obviously know the reason, not showing any buildup and giving a good reason for all this chaos leaves me perplexed as, until the police go crazy (not too long later) I admit I was rooting for them. That shouldn't happen in a film like this.

I'll stop here as I don't write reviews, more just my thoughts, but it were things like this that really annoyed me. It wasn't a bad film, but it REALLY felt like a movie for the oscars while feeling like they didn't really care about buildup and wanted to enjoy the torture porn of events that were based on real murders. 2-3 stars out of 5

Coraline

I am not gonna talk too much about this film (I have already posted a lot!), but I LOVED IT. One of the creepiest films I have seen and it is a family film! Can't recommend this movie enough! 4-5 stars out of 5

Good Time

An amusing title for an outstanding drama that is a completely different dark film compared to Detroit. While Detroit felt cold as you were just a third wheel watching this happen, you get to understand Pattison's character and it REALLY is a huge difference.

If you are hoping to watch, while dark, depressing, and realistic, a great film while being Robert Pattison's best acting, this is it. 4-5 stars out of 5

What Happened to Monday (2017) - surprisingly engaging near-future scifi thriller with strong performances from Noomi Rapace, Willem Dafoe and Glenn Close. Normally I see Netflix Original and cringe a bit, but I have to admit they've put out some decent films. Nothing that blows me away necessarily, but the story here is strong, the moral dilemma posed in one worth questioning, with the opposing answers of that dilemma facing off. There are a couple of twists along the way that'll surprise, but the ending is basically as you would have expected it to be. Bad Moral Choice loses to Better Moral Choice, and the dilemma is sort of swept under the carpet for dealing with at some other time.

So, didn't see a movie today, but I was in one.

Let me explain. My mom's friend is making a movie about the history of folk music from Appalachia, and is filming a couple of scenes near where I live. It's a pretty small film considering, but it's going to be at a couple festivals next year, so it's legit. Yesterday, she told me that they needed two teenagers for a scene, so I agreed. It's just one scene, and I'm only in it for a split second, but still, it's pretty cool.

Was really interesting to see the process for filming up close and personal. Definitely helps as someone who wants to go into the industry.

I couldn't agree more. It really felt like a 2 and a half hour long message that the police do horrible things and get away with it. It's well made, but I can't say I enjoyed it or was invested in what was happening. Having said that, I'm still glad the movie exists.

liked it, but can't help shake the feeling that the sensory assault approach to the movie is disguising a story that isn't terribly interesting? this seems most evident in the parts where the movie slows down. but that could also be applied to Dunkirk and I liked that a little more. idk I need someone smarter to explain it.

the constant close up shots were a bit much .. I've seen it compared to Mann but I don't remember it being that overbearing in his films

the other movie that came to mind was Victoria, where those young adult euro's make a series of bad decisions across a night, that movie had the single take gimmick
