Just found out about ICM, so I've only checked a couple of movies yet. Loads I still have to check off. Here it is: http://www.icheckmovies.com/profile/dmshaposv/

I saw Norwegian Wood yesterday night. I'm not familiar with the work of Trah Ann Hung. It had some pacing issues I felt - although I haven't read murakami's novel so perhaps the drawn out pacing might've been deliberate. Still, judging purely as a film, the movie could've done with trimming 15-20 mins.

With that out of the way, the acting was good, especially Rinko Kikuchi. There were some good shots and I really liked Jonhnny Greenwood's score. The cinematography was also very well done.

I have wanted to check out this movie for a while, but after finally finishing the book, I don't know if I really want to see it. I have heard the novel is much better, and this seems like one of those times I'd rather not ruin it. Probably one of my favorite books.

Red (Robert Schwentke, 2010) - I liked it, loved the cast and admired the characters.

Insidious (James Wan, 2010) - Genuine horror, pays a lot of homage to classic horror films which I liked a lot. It's different from modern horror films in the sense that it has those cliche moments known in most horror flicks but this one does it in a more appreciating manner. I liked it.

The Last Airbender (M. Night Shyamalan, 2010) - this was offensive to watch. Absolutely bullocks. I don't think I'll ever trust Shyamalan ever again.

I signed up to icheckmovies last night and I love the site, haven't added all the movies I've seen but I definitely like the set up an easy and nice way to track films I've seen.

Bit late with the reply here. ;)

I think you'll really like Memories of Matsuko.
It's basically the life story of a girl names Matsuko and goes over all the wonderful things t
that she experienced as well as all the heartbreak.
It is presented in an incredibly stylistic way, so if you're able to watch it on bluray, I'd go for that option.
Thinking back of it and now just watching the trailer again, I come to realize that it's actually one of my favourite movies.
Thanks to getting into Asian cinema about 5 years ago, I'm happy to say I've been able to add to that list in a substantial way. :)

So sad to never see people talking about this movie, although I'm happy to read people are giving Confessions a chance and seem to be enjoying it as much as I did.

Another movie I'd really like to see people give a try is Departures which follows the story of how an out of work Cello player moves from the big city back to his hometown, along with his wife.
Once there he answers a job offering in a newspaper which he thinks is from a travel agency, but ends up being a job as someone who prepares deceased people for their funeral.
A very endearing story told in a beautiful and serene way, while also making room for a couple of funny moments.
Again, one of the movies I'd put on my favourites list.

The Adjustment Bureau (2011)
The directing and acting was good, but my goodness the script was crap. :| How am I supposed to believe that Damon and Blunt's characters have this strong love for each other when they have spent hardly any real time with each other?
They only loved each other because God was lazy and couldn't clean up after himself.
The movie has a sad unintended message about "free will". Damon and Blunt certainly had chemistry, which helped carry the movie. I'm totally crushing on Emily Blunt. <3

Gulliver's Travels

I like Jack Black and I like Jason Segal, but this movie was just too corny. I was hoping for a few light laughs but man, this one was as stinker. 2/5

Going the Distance

Randomly caught this one and decided to record it. It was a nice surprise. Good amount of laughs. Didn't really care too much for Drew Barrymore's character but I enjoyed it overall. Strong 3.5/5

Maybe I am just a sad lonely person, but I would totally do just about anything for Emily Blunt. John Krasinski is one really lucky guy.

I hated that movie. I couldn't get passed the fact that Drew Barrimor's character was totally unbelievable and her acting was lazy. No chemistry, etc. Just a bad movie, Fever Pitch was better.

The Mist - I gotta say, this movie left me a little bit desolated. It gave me The Road/Cloverfield vibes watching it all the way til the end. I thought Thomas Jane's acting was medicore and Marcia Gay Harden playing the crazy religous bitch was down to the core. I like the movie but I think watching it once is just enough for me.

When the soldier mention parallel universes from the military base could of been the cause of the shitstorm going around. I was really hoping for just appearing Gordon Freeman fucking shit up.

What does it mean when something is down to the core?

Busting *** recommended for the cosmic bus/fnord chan types. elliot gould and robert blake as vice cops taking down corrupt something or another. feels a lot like 48 hours x Hardcore. elliot gould has the worst/best winter cap in this movie.

'70s Gould is one of my favorite things, so thanks for the heads up on this.

Unknown - I loved Taken; Taken this is not. Terrible.

I hear ya. Went in expecting bad-ass but it just ended up being ass. Seriously when all is revealed as to what's really going on, I thought it was so ludicrous, I was actually waiting for someone to go "nah, we're just bullshitting ya, this is how it really is". Sadly, that didn't happen.

4.5/10

Gonna watch Sucker Punch tonight, should be interesting..

I've been saying that for months. But my attention span to 1 list is very lacking XD
Yeah I'll probably never actually finish it up either.

It has a feature to import from IMDb. I wish it would do the same from Netflix. I have something like 850 movies rated on there but I don't feel like searching individually for everyone across both sites.

I like netflix just to see what kind of crazy specific subgenres they can come up with for streaming recommendations: usually some combination of "cerebral" "visually striking" "violent" "foreign" "horror" and/or "80s." lol.

Tried a criticker account once, didn't make it past 100 movies.
That's how I was but now I'm getting kinda addicted to ICM now that it's popped back up in this thread.

i have one called gritty real-life based on a true story movies from the 70s.

So I'm watching Sucker Punch right now, at the part where
they just entered the WWII setting
and i gotta say.. I am absolutely hating it so far.

The plot makes entirely no sense, the characters are totally flat, the soundtrack is GODAWFUL and the fact that its trying so hard to be cool is just annoying me. Should I turn this off now or does it get good later on?

Edit: So yeah, I turned it off. What a waste of time this was. 3/10 (I'm not giving it a 1 because some of the sets do look good and the special effects are alright, even though they're way too videogame-like)

So, Zack Snyder directing Superman? I hope Nolan can teach him how to suck less.

Ehh Sucker Punch is worth it alone for the action scenes IMO. If you aren't digging the awesome trench rushdown, then i guess you wouldn't like the rest of the film.

Splice - Not sure what I watched or why I watched it or why someone would make it.

It wasn't horrible, just creepy and pointless.

I'm not gonna lie, the action looked good. But it was all without any form of context or logic, so that makes me lose all interest, unfortunately.

The Class

Accurate and surprisingly funny depiction of a class of 14/15 year olds.

On a side note, I can't believe I've never heard of ICM. Great site.

Can anyone recommend good Westerns? It's a genre I haven't really explored the classics of, I'm watching The Searchers again which is probably one of my favourite films, but I haven't really seen any others somehow.

Once Upon A Time in the West and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly should be a good place to start.

Chinatown (1974) : a little too slow for its own good but great plot and writing. The ending is amazingly ironic.
The Class (2008) : being from a french "suburbs" I can say this film depicts the reality of the classes very accurately. But I didn't like the politics side of the writing. More details here for french readers.

I'd recommend starting with Leone's Dollars Trilogy - A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. I loved all three. As far as more modern westerns go, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, True Grit (2010), and Unforgiven are also worth watching. I'm not at all a fan of the genre, but I thought all of those films were great.

Yea I'll start with Sergio, his films have passed me by for too long, thanks. Dollars trilogy and Once Upon a Time in the West.

Edit: and I've seen those modern Westerns, thanks though.

which noir list?

those imdb lists aren't worth anyone's time.

The imdb noir list was cleaned up a while ago from foreign and unrelated films. There isn't a single film on it now that i wouldn't consider worth watching at the least. And all of them are on the TSPDT noir list anyway so it's certainly not a waste of time to go that route.

Both solid choices. If you want a more modern action style western, try Tombstone.

Unforgiven is also a good choice.

it's a waste of time to give the imdb any credit with anything beyond containing information about movies.

the crime list is absurd and the filled with movies featuring crimes (aren't all movies crime movies?) rather than films about crimes the noir list doesn't give an understanding about noir, or even promote good films. i mean out of the past is below white heat which isn't a noir and doesn't even show up on the crime list.

it might be better than the awful drama and mystery list, but what isn't?

One of the best films I've ever seen!
I need to see this in a cinema, on a big screen, before I die. It just seems the type of movie that would be amazing that way.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is pretty great

I watched Very Young Girls last night...It's eye opening, but I don't know if I'd recommended unless you really want to care about the issue itself. Judged solely as a film, I was a little bored in places. 6/10

Disgusted by the entire situation. The pimps are fucking demons. I don't even understand what makes people think the way they do. And the main ones shown in the beginning were stupid enough to believe that they could sell a documentary of their lifestyle to a cable station. The girls are so broken and stupid that I almost understand why prosecutors aren't sympathetic to them. A few seem to get out of the lifestyle in the end, but some kept going back and I wouldn't be surprised if they are still hookers right now.

IT'S FINE. EVERYTHING IS FINE! by Crispin Hellion Glover

Saw this as part of his book and movie tour. Amazing. Deals with the rejected desires of a man with a cerebral palsy. At times funny and others sad, I got teary eyed. There are things in this film that you have not seen before.

During the Q&A, Glover explained that the script was written by the actor, lending even more sadness to it all. Which is weird because he got to make a movie, but it is the closest he could get to his fantasy. Which I guess is true of all filmmakers to a certain degree, but still... he just wanted pretty girls to like him.

Highly recommended. If he is scheduled to appear near you, please do not hesitate to go.

Plot is somewhat reminiscent of a Japanese film called LATE BLOOMER, but the execution is completely different.

Oh yeah, NEW YORK RIPPER is awesome. Sleaze par excellence.

I have a ticket for tomorrow's showing. Did you see it in Oklahoma? My friend Daniel was at that show too.

Limitless

Enjoyed it a lot, even if it didn't materialize into something of greater depth.
It's basically 2 hours of Bradley Cooper smugness which was pretty entertaining.

I also find it fucked up that
he didn't go back and help his ex-wife's addiction
.

The movies I've seen recently (for the first time) are:

Gangs of New York
The Color of Money
The Aviator
LA Confidential
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Sucker Punch

Others have suggest Dollars Trilogy (and rightly so) but I reckon that Clint's own Westerns were pretty decent. Outlaw Jose Wales and High Plains Drifter both spring to mind. There is also Hang em High and Pale Rider.

I wouldn't proclaim them to be amazing, but Clint always manages to direct a solid movie.
