it doesn't take me much to set me off :) but praise around such unambitious shit is bothersome. i mean what a safe and boring movie and those bug me more than spectacular failures or whatever.

I can definitely appreciate that. Like I said, I thought The Man From Nowhere was okay, but I'd had it hyped up to be kinda like a Korean version of Taken. I translated this mentally as "Park Chan-wook does Taken!" and instead it was "Man, this wasn't nearly as cool as I'd hoped." Ah well.

i'm all broken up from having to go to raleigh or chapel hill to see movies now. a summer without the carolina theater is no summer at all.

i don't know about watching anything at the casbah either.

One of the theatres here is showing Aliens tonight. I've never seen it. And then I guess on Sunday, there's a Brazil/Quintet double feature.

I would give a lot to see Aliens in theaters. Go see it dude.

Do theaters do this kind of thing often? There's a lot of older movies that I would absolutely love to see in theaters.

Transformers 3. I wish there were less time wasted on humans and more time spent on robots.
Damn, humans ruin everything :P

I really liked Kong Fu Panda 2 though.

AU, yes, I saw the show in Tulsa. Missed your earlier comment.

How'd you like the spoken word portion?
I generallly enjoyed the spoken word segments even though there were tech issues and the funny ones were funny but some of them might have been a bit drawn out. On my way to see What is it? now.

Almost done with my Korean movie marathon:

The Chaser
- Not what I was expecting. I expected a revenge movie, and instead I got a thriller. Overall it's a solid movie, a bit gorey for my taste but definitely worth watching. 3/5

I Saw the Devil - Ah, here's the revenge. Again, a solid movie. Also again, a bit too gorey for me. Byung Hun Lee is probably my favorite Korean actor by default, and he did an OK job. The upside to this movie is that it jumps right into things. If you're looking for a fast-paced (but lengthy) revenge flick, grab some popcorn and watch this one night. 3/5

10954943_det.jpg

The Good, the Bad and the Weird - I imagine if I was a fan of spaghetti Westerns I would eat this right up (pun intended). But I'm not. It was (again, I know) solid, with more than a hint of Quentin Tarantino-ism (minus the signature dialogue). I didn't buy Woo-sung Jung as "The Good Guy". He just wasn't likeable. With that said, the production values were great, the comedic relief character was funny and there's a decent plot twist. 3/5

^ That's the order in which I would rank them, despite them having the same score. Adjust as you see fit according to your taste and what you feel like watching at the time.

Next up for me: Joint Security Area. After that, I need to move on to a new country's movies!

Yeah, I'm incredibly bummed out that we have to wait until the fall for the Carolina to return to life. I should have spent at least one solid weekend this summer sitting in their balcony. And, yes, I'm pretty dubious about watching flicks at the Casbah myself, especially considering their first line-up. Jaws 3-D off DVD? I...I don't know if I'm up for that.

I've never seen Quintet (though having recently read about how off-kilter it sounds, it's high on my to-watch list), but both Aliens and Brazil are must-sees on the big screen.

So I just watched The Shining on TV... What on earth was that movie about? I honestly had no clue what was going on and was laughing most of the time because of the randomness. I was in tears because of the 'Here's Johnny!' part! Also the scene with the
dude in a bear suit giving a blowjob..?
and the end scene with
the guy being frozen
absolutely killed me!
It should have been called a comedy instead of a horror.

I don't believe that you were actually watching the film. I suspect there was abundant channel surfing and maybe some texting and web browsing.

Yeah, it is very often frowned upon when somebody acts on the 'Junior' stigma. But goddamn if most times I read something completely naive that label isn't attached.

30 Minutes or Less. Probably 7.5/10 for me. Really liked it, very funny. Enjoyed it a bit more than Zombieland (same director, Ruben Fleischer).

Well I just watched Super.

Totally agree with Mister. The film really disappointed me. Ellen Page was nice but I absolutely hated the ending. I can't believe that
they killed Ellen Page
. So yea, I shouldn't have bothered.

Frank...
it's soooo gushy....

The Fall is utter kitsch imo. I didn't enjoy it at all.

Do you understand the definition of that word and if so, would you mind explaining how this description is appropriate at all?

GI JOE: Rise of Cobra
Overall I thought it was ok as far as brainless action flicks go, but good god the terrible effects and tatum's "acting" made me want to shut it off constantly, god bless rachel nichols for keeping me interested

North by Northwest
Loved it, fun and engaging, and it holds up incredibly well

To catch a thief
After NBNW I wanted to watch another cary grant film (must be the tan), and for the most part I enjoyed this as well, just a bit too predictable.

It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world
Hilarious movie, loved the cast and the ridiculous situations

I know its a typo, but can you just imagine what type of movie this could have been!
Hahaha u just noticed. Wouldn't be surprised if that's the porn parody's title!

Just finished watching Lady Vengeance. Oldboy gets most of the attention in Park Chan-wook's trilogy, but this is my personal favorite. I particularly like the fade to black and white version which is detailed below:

"Two versions of the film exist, the standard version and the "Fade to Black and White version". The latter version begins in full colour, but throughout the film the colour gradually fades until it is totally black and white at the end of the film. In conjunction with the camera technique of removing the colours, there is also a change in the environmental colours used in backgrounds and clothing. At the beginning of the film, the environments contain a lot of primary colours, whereas toward the end of the film pastel shades, blacks and whites are used. Geum-ja wears a blue coat in the early part of the film, but this is replaced with a black leather coat at the end. The brightly coloured walls of the prison and Geum-ja's bedroom are replaced with the grey walls of the school."

I also love, love, love the baroque soundtrack.

I saw Avenging Disco Godfather. Very campy and entertaining, even if it does drag during some of the disco scenes. It also has one of the strangest endings I've ever seen. I won't spoil it, but it's weird. I recommend seeing it with some friends.

I agree. All movies are in some fashion derivative; however, in comparison to other films The Fall seems rather original at least in the way the narrative is constructed and of course in its visualizations. I don't understand the criticisms about its plot either. They are irrelevant. The Fall is a sort of homage to the great Grecian/Roman epics of old, which focused on grandiose imagery and stoic larger than life heroes. The plot of The Fall, like the plots of epics, is merely a vehicle for imaginative thought. Therefore, the movie is largely a success.

Whatever dude, I really don't give a damn about the Shining and don't believe for a moment Jack's decline to complete insanity for it seemed like he was already creepy and insane at the very start of the film. I always seem to trick myself into giving it another go just because so many people like it (like once every 3 years and I am like "Why did I do this again?") which is more than I watch films I really like but meh, I will probably rewatch it in like 6 years.

I watched The Prestige for the first time on Thursday night. I had heard good things about it, but I didnt know much of the actual movie. I ended up really enjoying it; as usual, David Bowie was fucking awesome. Definitely a film worth seeing.

For the amount of times you claim to have watched this film, I am surprised you still feel this way.

Big picture for big movie!

This is easily one of the most insane, graphic, and enjoyable movies ive ever seen. I mean, good god man. This takes everything but the easy route when it comes to exploitation movies. It manages to actually not make people cringe with cheese and instead cringe at the crazy fucking brutality of it. Rutger Hauer is godlike. It is so amazing.

On that note then you can say by Guillermo Del Toro will always be a success because he can construct some crazy monsters with crazy ass arms and legs and eyes and buttocks and we can just sit around the house and throw our hands in the air for by Guillermo Del Toro for his crazy ass lazy imagination.

The Fall is dull with a terribly annoying child actor and it does nothing more than act like someone using a copy machine with the Surrealistic class section in a freshman year art history book, add some vivid digital colors to it in Photoshop, and oh yeah, add one of the most annoying child acting performances in a film in recent memory.

When does Jack Nicholson not sound creepy and insane?

To HiRes: I too like Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance the best.

SUCKER PUNCH EXTENDED CUT

This is the movie that deserves Inception's acclaim. Very similar in a way, but with less hand-holding, better action and hot chicks. Owes a bit to Argento and Nintendo.

I am going to personally punch you in the gut if this post will push me to rent it (my girlfriend wants to watch it for whatever reason) and it turns out to be the biggest waste of my life ever.

I will take that punch with honor.

Seriously, it's awesome. I am kicking myself for not seeing it in the theater.
