MS buys the Xbone.com domain name

I'm all for shitting on MS these days, but I don't particularly like Xbone. As a shorthand, it only works in one language (English) and as an insult, it seems petty and classless. Like M$.

XB1 works fine.
In short it's kinda like the Xbone.

On NeoGAF earlier this week, Major Nelson called the Xbone moniker disrespectful. "I don't like it...it disrespects the teams that have put in thousands of hours (already) into the development of the product. Sure, it's cheeky but I don't care for it myself," he wrote.

"disrespectful" lol

Many people write Xblive instead of XBox live, so how couldn´t MS think of Xbone for XBox One. Did they really think we call it "one" because the xbox 360 was mostly called "360"??

I think this is literally the first time I have ever read "Xblive", actually.

If you're lurking, Larry, you guys didn't help yourselves with that bad name and the poor decisions and then the flimsy defense and the flakey change of policies.

I've been a fan of the name since the first time I read it. It's silly and versatile.

The giant corporation needs to lighten up.

This is it really (and the same, was a fan of the name 1st time I read it), we've (gamers) always shortened names and unfortunately for MS the Xbox One happens to form into a pretty funny one and is kinda catchy.

XBone is just short for XBoxOne (Removing the ox).

Anyway, with Ballmer and Mattrick gone. Now there is just Nelson to ditch. Then Microsoft's PR nightmare will finally be over.

I think Major Nelson is the creepiest..... Picture a scenario with a kid explaining to their parent how they follow on twitter a grown man who calls him self Major Nelson and represents Microsoft...... WTF is with the Major or Nelson part?
As if that wouldn't set of some alarms if you were a parent.

Regarding the respect issue, lol rrod didn't result in a recall it was a longer warranty on faulty machines... Trying to fuck over the entire fan base with original DRM was respectful also.

"Disrespectful" rofl.

It's a fun name.

XBO is more offensive. Extreme Body Odor. That's how I read it.
Haha me too, XBO is horrible. It also looks like the person had a spasm right before finishing writing XBOX.

"Disrespectful", is this a joke? Because it made me chuckle.

It's a fucking nickname, Nelson. Maybe the people who spent "thousands of hours into the development" should've thought of this when they named their console the fucking Xbox One.

They were probably aiming for people calling it "the One", so Xbone might be kind of sour in that regard. I'm going to use "Xbone" even more now.

It's funny because MS probably thought everyone would just call it "the One" like it was a god among consoles. Instead, they get "xbone."

Eh, I think this is the first time I ever seen it written like that.

Nobody does this.

Like B Rabbit in 8 Mile, MS is getting out ahead of the people who would rib them on the name by embracing it. How do you make fun of a clown? Do you point out his silly nose? His oversized shoes?

Show your respect guys, this is a consumer electronics product we are talking about. It's not one of those YouTube games reviewers who you can treat like an arsehole and talk down to!

I type X1 because i’m lazy, but everyone I know says xbone. I don’t think its disrespectful, I just think of it as lightly poking fun of the X1 reveal. It all just tied together so well that I don’t think it will ever live the name down.

If you're lurking, Larry, you guys didn't help yourselves with that bad name and the poor decisions and then the flimsy defense and the flakey change of policies.

Whatever, this could be the most rad console ever and I'd still call it this Xbone. It's the crap name and nothing more.

I'm not typing or calling it the Xbox one, the same way I wouldn't for PlayStation 4. I'm also not calling it one. That is a moronic name.

Xbone is quick and it works. Fuck it if they don't like it. They should have anticipated this.

If you can type 'ps4' what's so hard about typing 'xb1'?

The ones that annoy me the most are XB1 or X1 because the one is the word One and not the number 1. Fine with XBO or One. I prefer XBone because it's got the X the B (for box) and the one (for One) and it's a fun name to say.

Because the XB1 can also reference a different console, but also because its a catchy name that most gamers will know. Also what Zomba13 states, they used the word one and not the number 1.

EmptySpace actually thought the original name was going to be "xbox on" because that was supposed to be the first thing you'll say to the next-gen xbox, but after the debacle of the "always on", microsoft probably added an "e" there and changed it to "one".

either that, or as other have said, microsoft was banking on people calling it "one" just as people did with the 360.

It's funny because MS probably thought everyone would just call it "the One" like it was a god among consoles. Instead, they get "xbone."

It's what I'm thinking too. Like, they saw everyone refer to the Xbox 360 as the 360, so they thought they could get away with "The One" for the new device... And their idea backfired hilariously.

Also, MS is really good about quickly undercutting Nelson's statements themselves between this and "you can't just flip a switch."

They did. It redirected to Amazon PS4 preorder pages. MS acquired it somehow

I have to admit I tried buying it a couple months after announcement. Guy who had it was some squatter who had a lot of bizzaro URL's, I think he had Xbone for quite some time.

Tried feigning ignorance, saying it was for "my band" but guy knew what was up. Wanted like 5000 for it

I imagine it paid off for him unless MS pulled some kinda copyright squatting thing. Xbone is unofficial though so they might have bought it

I suspect its bought and left to die as im sure some witty character would have it full of memes and funnehs :)

Either that or MS will have a laugh at their own decisions on it, I know Albert is good at having a laugh at himself/MS (with good taste)

Xbone is just so convenient. It's fast to write and easy to read out. In a year or two I'm sure it'll just be the Xbox but the transition period I'm just not sure yet what to call it. Xbox One is way too long and Xone is weird to pronounce.

You know he's insane. While some were calling it xbone because their policies some call it that because it makes some sense. Xbox shortened XB and since there was an XB1 you can't call it that hence you use the spelling like they did one. Hence you have Xbone or XB one. Course the reaction doesn't surprise me.

No one gets to choose their nickname.

In fact complaining about it just makes even more appropriate, suck it up Xbone.

In their deluded minds they imagined 'the one', but oh no - that's not how it works.

One of my favorite things about Albert Penello is that he didn't sign up here with some stupid gamertag nickname.

EmptySpace actually thought ...

I can't believe you're still doing this. Do you not understand how silly it is? No matter what you're saying, no matter how insightful your post may be, it's always going to be completely overshadowed by your third-person crap.

Yeah, it's satisfying to say.

That said, I do not use it in actual speech. I default to Xbox because I would really rather not have to explain an internet in-joke to coworkers or friends.

I don't know about you guys but I love to call it the Xbox One All-in-one Entertainment System from Microsoft. It just rolls off the tongue.

Or XBone for short.

Hoo-doo feels like you're angry for absolutely no reason.
Take a chill pill, he says.
