MS buys the Xbone.com domain name

I have used xb1, x1, [x]1, but I'm using xbone from now on since nelson said he doesn't like it. Should have never spoken about it.

So disingenuous, the term xbone was clearly coined in a derogatory context.

Pretty much. It's basically doing the same thing as putting M$, but people seem to jump through hoops to pretend it isn't. Whether the console deserves it or now is a different question, but some of you all get so giddy over the dumbest things. It's like a kid that just learned how to get away with saying a curse with actually saying the curse word.

Fair enough, I suspected this would only be a matter of time.

My problem with this, and it's a new problem that didn't exist before, is saying that people can be disrespectful toward a piece of consumer electronics. Especially considering the disrespectful way some people at MS have responded to their fans at times.

I don't know if you're being naive or disingenuous, but it was obviously their intention. Think it through. We abbreviate all the time - the Xbox 360 is almost never called "xbox 360" in casual conversation. What do you think "xbox one" would (hopefully, by MS) be logically shortened to?

And it's a piece of electronics for fuck's sake. Disrespect has nothing to do with it.

Just because you're certain that's the way they were thinking doesn't mean that's what happened. And regarding your question I think X1 (X One) is a pretty good guess at what MS would've wanted it abbreviated to. "The One" in my ears just isn't specific enough.

Won't someone please think of the inanimate objects?

Look at it from a marketing exec's perspective. I think it's a really smart move, notwithstanding the disrespectful result.

Obviously the official reason will be for people who use XBOne but this is still pretty damn funny.

I call it the Bone often just like the Xbox 360 was just the 360. The Xbox One name is still really, really dumb but I'm sure they're going to use the One to reference it being as "Your Number One Destination for Entertainment" or something.

I would agree that XBoned is derogatory, but XBone is just a bone with an x. Who doesn't like bones? Bones are featured in pirates, skeletons, David Boreanaz... what's not to like?

Xbone aggravates me, but it's better than Xbox one. "Ex bone" is how I've said it in my head since it was announced. Dunno why they didn't want it to be referred to as the X1.

It definitely started out as somewhat derogatory.

You know what, though? I am getting a Day One XBone. I am happy to have it, it'll be fun, and I will enjoy it as well as my new PS4.

I don't hate the machine or Microsoft.

But...XBone makes me smile. Xbone is faster for me to type than XB1.

XBox One is a horrendous name. In casual conversation, XBone feels easier and more natural than X-B-1 or saying "The One" (which has far too many links to other subjects / media to ever be used). Saying X-BO reminds me too much of Taebo or Rambo.

And again, it makes me smile. I don't care if that makes me immature, people who judge are immature (nyah nyah).

So....XBone forever.

I think it is insincere to say that, of course the Xbox itself doesn't have feelings. How would you feel if the products you used to entertain you for hundreds of hours (or even created) were widely called by a derogatory nickname?

I wouldn't call "Xbox One" a smart move but sure, the marketing people sure would've preferred anything (The One, X1, XBO, etc) over "Xbone".

Not really. I haven't seen or heard anyone call it "The One" before you did. Just because Xbox 360 was called "The 360" doesn't mean Xbox One will be called "The One" or that Microsoft assumed that it would.

I don't buy this either, because it's so vague. Most people will make a Matrix joke anyway, even if they knew what the person was talking about.

I plan on spending a quality 5+ years with my Xbone, or Bone. Hopefully Microsoft puts some more work into the next name.

Honestly, with how quickly Xbone caught on I am surprised Microsoft didn't change the name of the console. At least no one thinks the Xbone is just a new controller for the 360, but its certainly a negative sounding name.

Eh, the Xbone name was timely for the E3 catastrophe, but I'm over it now. X1 is easier for me to type anyway. I'll still use Xboned though for any future fuck ups.

To me, Xbone sounds silly. Someone here made a picture with a skull and crossbones that had Xbox One exclusive games around it a long time ago. I can't find it anywhere though.

I can't believe this is news... MS buys pretty much every domain similar to xbox/xboxone/xbone etc etc. they bought xboxdone too

they use a service for this, markmonitor

Prevents illicit domain abuse tactics—such as cybersquatting—by using defensive domain registration to block others from exploiting domain names associated with your brand.

"They call me Bone
They call me XB1
They call me Xone
They call me 180

That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my...name"

Xbone is just the name the publics adopted. Yeah some of them are haters, but it's not meant to be derogatory to the console. Moneysoft/M$ is making fun of all the paywalls microsoft has so that's how it's being derogatory. What is the Xbone moniker implying about the system? Nothing other than the name sucks, which everyone agrees on.

So tell me, what is so derogatory about the Xbone name, other than it just being a shorthand that the creators didn't intend?

That's what I don't really get either. Aside from being a little cheeky, it's really not that bad of a name. This defense that it's "disrespectful" really rubs me the wrong way. I don't see why consumers have to toe the corporate line.

If you think it's ok to invest negative emotions into a piece of plastic, and call it vulgar/derogatory names, you'll have to accept that other people have positive feelings about it and might take offense. It's a double standard otherwise.

Also phallic references are generally seen as annoying/immature even to neutral observers.

It's only derogatory if you perceive it that way. There are plenty of people in this thread buying one that are embracing the term Xbone. MS should be embracing the name as well, it's not going anyway anytime soon.

I always read xbone as Xbox one. Other acronyms like X1 I just read the letters. I really don't see xbone as disrespectful.

Must be a slow news day for this to stay on the front page. This is common marketing 101. You will always miss a few domains and most likely cost you more later to buy those and protect yourself later. Someone in GB already got xbone.xxx such plans wasted.

A company you have no relationship with tried to bone you.

Its left a sour taste in a lot of people's mouths. My girlfriend has been paying for Gold pretty much since its inception and is now eyeing the Xbone with an air of suspicion. She's flat out refused to get one within the first year because:

a) She got hit hard by RROD. Twice in a year.
b) She's lost a lot of trust in Microsoft after their initial policies.

Microsoft have it rougher than they are letting on. They've done fucked up.

I even asked her if she wanted me to pre-order (and pay for her)a day-one addition and she flat out said no. Free Xbox One and she said no. Very telling.
