Multiple fatalities reported at Umpqua Community College shooting in Oregon

Someone tweeted this after the last shooting but if a bunch of preschoolers being massacred didn't start any meaningful conversation about gun control nothing ever will.

Yeah, but we gotta keep trying and speaking up. Just like so many other large social changes, the point of view that guns should be banned needs to become more normalized before it has a prayer of being enacted -- to any degree. That day is a loooong way away in America, but we still need to work toward it.

Our politicians are pathetic for not acting rationally the first time something of this scale happened. How many lives have we fucking lost because of that and how many more will we have to lose before anything gets done about it?

4chan still being active is beyond me. I dont get how something like that can still hang around online at all especially considering its famous for such disgusting shit on there.

Someone was saying we don't need to change our mental health system because it's in line with other countries that have much less gun violence.

Can I get a source or something on that? First I'm hearing of it.

Just because idiots are spouting stupid bullshit there doesn't mean they don't have the right to.

But I wouldn't miss it if it was gone.

Nothing illegal is allowed there and anything that is gets reported to the feds.

People posting dumb shit isnt illegal

Gun defenders could watch someone shoot their children and would still defend the poor innocent guns.

Over the last 16 years, starting when I became an adult I clung to the belief that anyone could be reasoned with if they would just look at things like this and realize something is fundamentally wrong. That we have to fix this.

But esp. over the last few years I've become convinced; nothing will change, because they care more about their precious guns then the human lives taken by them.

Gun legislation will never happen. As you say above, Sandy Hook changed nothing. I live not far from there so that one hit me especially hard. And nothing. There were people I worked with, here in Connecticut, defending the damn guns the fucking day afterward. Not 15 miles away.

I don't talk to them anymore because they are broken beyond repair. Nothing will convince them. Nothing will change them.

Any examples? What other hobbies are responsible for mass killings like guns are?

I think this is the part where he goes, "You know what, I'm done talking about this issue. People believe what they want to believe and they just have knee-jerk reactions to anyone that presents a different point of view."

Sometimes I really want to leave America, it seems like a gun is always popping off. I don't I should have to think where do I run if someone starts shooting, but past experiences and headlines like this make me think I'm not wrong by thinking that

followed by the ever hallowed "this thread reminded me I needed to purchase ammo for my guns thanks guys! :) :) :)"

Reports are saying the shooter went from class to class opening fire, all in the science department building

Condolences to all those affected

I lost all hope after Sandy Hook.

There are simply far too many people in this country who are unwilling to give up their guns, despite seeing headlines like this all the fucking time.

Guns are really fun to use. I have no problem admitting that. I've gone target shooting several times with my friends. But I'm totally willing to give all that up if it would make this shit stop.

Also add "this is why I never talk about gun issues on gaf."

A lot of legal hobbies have "insane" risks and death statistics attached to them. We don't live in some "no fun allowed" society where everything inherently dangerous is forbidden. The US has deemed that the benefits of gun ownership, even if just for hobby purposes, outweighs the risk, just like many other things. You and others here may find that disgusting or whatever, but like you said, it's a matter of perspective.

So, what other fun hobbies enable you to murder multiple unwilling participants from a distance in a matter of seconds? If adults consent to go do something that is extremely dangerous to themselves, like rock climbing without a harness, it's not endangering the lives of those who want nothing to do with rock climbing. Unlike guns. Your argument sucks.

4chan is like, a thousand times cleaner then it used to be. 99% of the stuff isn't any worse then you would see on Reddit subforums.

may they RIP, I'm sure this could have been avoided, condolences to the families and friends I can't even think how they feel right now.

PS; I'm so glad I don't live in the United States of America and that there's a giant ocean and expensive plane tickets between us, you can keep all your "freedom" and pride on it all you want, just so sad you call "freedom" allowing easy and legal access to guns, guns that prevent the "freedom" to live without fear of most people there. The day it's one of your own, a wife, a husband, a brother, your own child... watch you change your nonsensical take on guns and freedom.

It can't hurt to do so. It'd be pretty brave to say you enjoy it, but you just can't support the industry anymore.

Care to elaborate?

Dude. Its crazy how gun owners like you intentionally hedge and make a clear issue fuzzy.

Your hobby is a murder weapon. There's nothing like that elsewhere. Just own that and accept it.

Examples?

Any examples? What other hobbies are responsible for mass killings like guns are?

Yeah didn't you hear about the Mountain Bike accident that ripped through an elementary school last month?

You're deranged.

So you guys want me to get into something not related to the issue we're talking about? No thanks, especially when I'm attacked personally for my opinion. You guys have fun.

tbh, I dunno how that's gonna work now since the Japanese owner of 2ch (Japanese anonymous text BBS) now owns 4chan.

Yeah I have no clue; I just know that 4chan still exits largely due to cooperation, I don't know if changing owners hands has changed any of that.

Holy shit I just heard about this from my parents who live about 10 minutes from there. I grew up in that area and got my AA from UCC and have a bunch of friends who still go there. Thankfully most of them seem accounted for and aren't injured, but I seriously feel sick to my stomach over this whole entire thing..RIP to all of the victims and their families :(

You fucking established the line of discussion by challenging someone's assertion. Holy shit! WTF are you?!

GOP says it's mental illness.

Funding for mental illness?

Oh. Nothing?

ok.

I mean they're not entirely wrong. A nice side effect of refusing to take any action on gun control would be if we could dedicate a ton more money to mental health services.

But, as you say, nope.

You just did it again, proved this guy's point.

Well, hell.

LOOOOOOOOL

Damn, right on cue. You really killed that argument.

You said false, like it was a fact, then proceeded to back your argument with...let's count em up here... zero facts. Your opinion means shit if you can't back it up.

So you guys want me to get into something not related to the issue we're talking about? No thanks, especially when I'm attacked personally for my opinion. You guys have fun.

No we're asking for something you should easily be able to provide if you could support your argument, which you clearly can't.

Your schtick is obvious and boring. Try something different.

What are you talking about? They wanted you to unpack this statement:

A lot of legal hobbies have "insane" risks and death statistics attached to them.

That's exactly related to the issue we're talking about. You brought it up yourself!
