Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
I think my favorite thing about MHA is that you can look nothing and even function nothing like a human, but your completely accepted in sociaty, like you can have a head of a crow or look like a
cute
alien demon chick with purple skin and demon eyes and nobody will look at you funny.

they didnt give as good a look on his gainsas they didnin the manga

I came back to this thread after just watching episode 3 to comment on this. As someone that got started on the manga after watching episode 2, rewatching the OP at the beginning of the episode immediately threw up red flags for me. Midoriya is absolutely shredded. Even while small his posture in the manga, though sometimes the author might forget it, usually portrays the fact that he is built as fuck. It's usually most evident on his forearms and hands a lot of times. The OP shows him in his costume and he is small as fuck.

Also yeah, the show is going WAY too fucking slow. The montage could have been tightened up. The extended scene in the classroom was way too long.

The 13 episode count really screwed them over, since there's only one possible ending point for that amount of episodes, but it has to be stretched out to actually hit that target.

The episode limit is bugging me too but so far the anime is good and it's gained more traction and will continue to do so as it goes further. Pretty sure new seasons will be made.

I wonder if they eliminated *actual* racism yet tho lol

Oh man, that is funny, never occurred to me.

Wow I feel like an idiot for not figuring that out

One other thing of note

Non-manga Spoiler:

Even giving a regard to characters being similar due to an artist's style, Uraraka is pretty much a copy of Deku's mom. They look so similar you could put Deku's mom's hair on Uraraka and they would pretty much look the same barring age/weight/and Uraraka's cheeks. They have the same personality. The real clincher is that they even have similar quirks. Both of their quirks are gravity based. Uraraka makes items weightless in affect reducing their gravitional pull from the Earth and allowing them to float while Deku's mom does the opposite and brings things towards herself like a gravitational pull.

With Uraraka likely being Deku's One True Pairing, Deku is basically dating a carbon copy of his mom.

Dekupus Rex.

I think Deku's mom chub'd up because her son got super depressed

If she got fat because of her power she'd probably already have been fat when the series started, but she only got that way after she found out he'd never get a quirk

The Hunter x Hunter volumes also fixed that.
Also the series isn't over, it has just restarted (finally) and the art is good.

Interesting to me that is is constantly being compared to HxH. Don't get me wrong, HxH was alright, but I felt like it really lacked a big punch line that kept the overall plot interesting. And I saw seventy episodes. Meanwhile, in the first 3 episodes of this show, they manage to make Deku an absolutely incredibly endearing character whose motivations and shortcomings are made super clear, and (imo) builds a stronger connection with the audience than Gon could only hope to achieve.

I'm sorry I wish I liked HxH as much as everyone else.

Gon a shit and Deku is already a much more endearing character, with a more comprehensible motivation.

so he actually does get a superpower(though I suppose it could still end up being a troll until we actually see it) thought they were gonna keep it with him being powerless and using straight up tactics and probably tech to become a hero.

I blame the thread title for saying he's supposed to be smart.

His power actively cripples him after each use, so 95% of his battle output is him thinking situations through.

He is. He gets genuine power, but it's limited on a lot of levels that acting smart is a must for him. Deku is neither the weakest, nor the strongest around.

For real though growing up in a world where 80% of the population has magic powers and you don't would suck. Wonder how drastically this would affect the economy, you even saw the teacher make fun of how he knew all the kids would say they wanted to be heroes. Then again there is a plentiful need for masons with the amount of buildings that get destroyed!

Even in the non hero business I imagine those with quirks beat out normal humans. Like, how can a quirkless compete with super intelligence in a scientific field, or healing related powers in the medical?

I wonder if there are incentives for a company to hire a quirkless. I imagine that would be the case.

I blame the thread title for saying he's supposed to be smart.

I think we'll see him reap the fruits of his labor by applying his research notes in battle situations or using his new powers cleverly.

There are geniuses even here, in the realest world. You don't need to be better than the top surgeons to be a surgeon that is needed. You don't need to be one of these legendary soldiers to be needed as a soldier in the army. People with certain Quirk may excel in certain fields, but that doesn't mean that these fields are saturated with them.

I meant super geniuses, like Mr. Fantastic style. Someone who's quirk is extreme intelligence that goes beyond what we know in our world.

Just pointing out that you don't need to go to the hero business to make use of powers.

What about it? At what point is one single genius robbing other people of their jobs? Smart people are still needed. In fact, I don't think there isn't something like a genius Quirk. Quirks seem to be more practical. Most have no use at all in regular office work.

This will be explained in Episode 4 and 5, trust me.

One is not exclusive from the other.

I never said smart people are not needed. I got that from the intro in the first episode where they showed us a guy quickly reading a book using psychic powers.

Though yeah it seems people still don't have a good grasp on how to use their powers yet.

I ordered the 3 volumes of the manga. This has got under my skin in a way that means I seriously can't wait a week, haha.

That's the whole reason for the anime. You should be in for a treat. Make sure to post your impressions in the manga thread, I look forward to reading them.

She does, and like the anime, nobody points out that she got fat.

Well, I know how much she changed, appearance-wise. But I'm just drawing blanks with how often she had appeared interacting with her son. Also, where the hell is his father?

Well, he's probably a salaryman, and if the current trends in the Japanese workday hold true up until MHA, he's probably just been at the office since Deku was born.
