UPDATE: Quoting this investor preview info from the main Season 6 MLP thread:
The info train for the upcoming movie just keeps on coming. There's a toy fair going on this weekend which is why we're seeing so much info for the movie being released so far. Expect a trailer to drop sometime this weekend as apparently it aired at the event. First up is a couple new promo slides talking about the movie and the brand going forward:

The toy fair is an investor conference so there's a lot of business talk about promoting the film and it's merch as well. They also dropped that there's going to be 7 songs for the movie. (Which I want to say we already knew. Pretty sure that number sounds familiar) There's way too much stuff for me to post here so I would encourage you to check out the EQD post here.

Next up is something that doesn't surprise me entirely although it's odd to hear it so early on. Season 8 has already been confirmed. Sort of expected given how they're releasing a major motion picture to promote the show but cool to hear it nonetheless.

They've also show more teasing for the new supporting characters for the movie. Here's a short blurb that they gave on each of the 8 revealed new characters for the movie:

"Capper - Con Artist Cat, turned hero
Tempest - A Unicorn Who's broken horn speaks to a troubled past
Songbird Serenade - The Hottest musical act in Equestria
Grubber - Hilarious bumbling side kick to The Storm King
The Storm King - Big Bad Villain of the Movie
Captain Caelano - Dynamic Leader of the Parrot Pirate Crew
Qyeen Novo - Regal Ruler of the Sea Ponies
Skystar - Energetic Daughter of Queen Novo"

Also worth mentioning that Emily (Tempest), Kristin (Skystar), Sia (Songbird Serenade), and Taye (Capper) will be singing in 5 of the 7 songs in the movie. It's already been revealed Sia is already composing 2 songs so she's going to probably be featured in 2 of them so I imagine the other 3 will each get their own song. (BTW called it that Capper would get a musical number)

Lastly, the polish plot synopsis has been officially confirmed as the plot of the movie.

Hasbro Studios has given the greenlight to a “My Little Pony” movie, with plans to release the animated film in 2017.

The film will join “Jem and the Holograms” as the first to be produced through Allspark Pictures, a new label through which the company will self-finance or pair up with other companies to co-finance a slate of film projects.

Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Prods. already is co-producing the live action “Jem,” with Universal Pictures co-financing the movie’s budget. The studio has dated the film for release on Oct. 23, 2015.

Hasbro Studios will take the reigns of “My Little Pony,” producing and financing it in-house. It is in discussion with studios to release the film “on the broadest possible number of screens,” said Stephen Davis, president of Hasbro Studios and global entertainment and licensing for Hasbro Inc. “We’ve very excited about the potential of that movie.”

[...]

Joe Ballarini, who wrote Fox’s “Ice Age: Continental Drift” is penning the script for the “Pony” pic, while Megan McCarthy, who produces and has written for the series “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic,” and straight-to-homevideo “My Little Pony: Equestria Girls” films, will serve as co-executive producer on the theatrical movie.

Reminder about previous thread:
Modbot said:
We don't need a thread that exists just to make fun of male My Little Pony fans. If someone else wants to start a thread about the movie, then so be it. But this one wasn't going anywhere productive.

Here's hoing less haterade in the thread. Anyways not sure about the writer of Ice Age, only film I kinda enjoyed was the first one.

Let me repost my thoughts on the film:
I wouldn't put it past someone else to be able to write a good "Friendship is Magic" story; most episodes are very watchable and there are a wide variety of writers. The question is, WILL it be the beloved FiM characters (BTW, I guarantee the film will ignore series continuity) or will it be some other group, like how the cast almost entirely changed in every other MLP series?

Albeit I've yet to see a MLP episode, I find it odd that Lauren Faust is nowhere to be seen in this project, wasn't she the driving force behind the series?

I wonder if the Brony phenomena will ever fizzle out.
This indicates that it's far from over.
Well, this movie suggests 2017 at the earliest, if it's tied to the Friendship is Magic series. Would be nice if it gets a movie for an ending. Because sooner or later, it has to end, hopefully before it goes all zombie Simpsons.

Will this even be relevant by 2017? Why wait so long?
Let's say Friendship is Magic ends in 2016. (There's no set end date for it at the moment, mind you.) Then rebooting the franchise with a movie seems like a good idea, no?

We know there's a 5th season coming, and rumor has it a 6th is on the way, too. But, of course, that was before The Hub became Discovery Family, so who knows about that. Then again, I doubt it'd be hard for this particular show to find a new home if it had to.

She left the series partway through season 2's development. (Season 4 finished airing earlier this year and Season 5 is out within the next six months.)

It seems as though she wanted more creative control than what she was given, or that the production schedule that Hasbro wanted was too fast for what she wanted to do. She is currently working on Medusa, an animated movie for Sony.

The thread on /mlp/ right now brings some good points, but this is the one thing everyone agrees on.

Just watch, even after the film, where the CMC save the day by singing, building, and doing scooter tricks, they will still be too vapid to get their cutie marks.

Not everyone can be as gifted as Diamond Tiara whose lifelong talent is wearing a diamond tiara.

I wonder if the "flash style animation" of the show will get a bonus ...

....they will probably make it cgi =P

It's kind of amazing this is happening.

Every time I hear about an MLP movie coming out from the two Bronies I know, the topic that always gets brought up is how obnoxious it is to go see it because it's showing in one theatre, 100 miles away, weekdays at like 10 AM.

Yeah, Equestria Grils was a good hour-long drive away from me.

The one thing i take from this, is that hasbro should totally jump on that Mahvel money and tie in all their movies, Hasbro Cinematic Universe baby, Transformers and GI Joe yes, but tie in Battleship, that Clue movie, the Jem movie coming out, this MLP movie, Candyland, Yahtzee, oh don't forget the Oujia board movie coming out too, Toy Avengers, 2020 in Imax 3D. It'll make 25 dollars at the box office. A masterpeece.

I feel like the My Little Pony fad has kinda faded away. Not as many brony news articles of kids getting picked on. I think the show's popularity has fizzled.

I'm excited, but a lot of things can happen between now and 2017. Glad McCarthy's involved at least and it sounds like they're making this a bigger release than Equestria Girls. Good.

Here's hoping they can get away with some more over the top DBZ Action

The one right here.

After talking to Lupin, we've agreed that we should shift discussion to this thread. We both have PMed the mods to either lock this one, or merge this one into that one. So if you're wonder which thread to post on, post in the other thread; thanks!

We're in it for the long haul guys! This is gonna be an awesome, civil, fun ride.

I feel bad for the parents who are going to take their little children to this only to be surrounded by grown ass men probably shouting memes throughout the film.

So there was a previous topic and it got closed, huh? That's why I posted in the community thread that it would be best to alert a mod before making it, but unfortunately, Lupin didn't see my post before making the topic.

Anyway, having the Ice Age 4 writer makes me wary, though it's possible that they just needed someone from the screenwriter guild to write the initial script and the crew of the show will make their own modifications. I have no idea if that's how the union regulations work, but it seems possible.

It's very likely this movie is going to be CG, but who knows, some fans have created some very nice looking 3D models (someone post the Fluttershy and Flutterbat one).

A reboot seems like a very likely path, and given that, I imagine a remake of the pilot story of Friendship is Magic would be good. Even when it first aired, Nightmare Moon was presented in a very underwhelming fashion, given who she was supposed to be, and later villains (including Tirek in the above gif) just made her look even more underwhelming. Heck, the flashback in "Princess Twilight Sparkle" did a much better job at making her threatening, and Nightmare Rarity from the comics felt much more dangerous. This is very likely due to them simply not knowing how far they could push the threat level of the villains early on, so a movie version could hopefully make Nightmare Moon a better villain.

I really hope that the movie sticks to being a story aimed at girls, instead of putting in dumb things to appeal to little boys. I'm not worried about attempts to appeal to bronies, because Hasbro has made several statements showing that they're aware that the way to appeal to bronies is for the show to just keep doing what they're doing, and the way the show has developed seems to reflect that.

EDIT:

Uh, that thread was closed and this one is still open. Personally, I do prefer this one, due to not being misleading about whether or not this is a Friendship is Magic movie.

I'm thinking this will be a reboot. If it is, will there be fandemonium for it?
I feel bad for the parents who are going to take their little children to this only to be surrounded by grown ass men probably shouting memes throughout the film.
Would you have a problem with these grown ass men if they merely sat and watched the film?

Yeah, reading Huelen's story is PAINFUL.

You aren't kidding. Poor kids/parents!

It makes perfectly normal people who like cute pseudo-horse-based cartoons want to be as disassociated from the fandom at large as possible. Well, speaking anecdotally, anyhow...

EDIT: We were going to shift to Huelen's thread so he could maintain a semi-OT OP for tweets and other minor news updates but it didn't work out.

DOUBLE-EDIT: No comment on the typo I bolded in the actual press release?

Ive only seen Season one but I might go see this. Any idea what seasons should be watched before seeing it? Is it just a independent plot or what?

We don't have story/continuity details for this film (IDW Comics, EG, and FiM are connected, so this could be too), but you should watch season 2, then 3, then EG, then 4, then RR. If you want, you can skip EG and RR, but don't skip season 3, even though the season is quite weak as a whole to many of us.

Basically, watch season 2, and if it maintains your interest, go in order.

Well, like I said above a lot can happen between now and 2017 in regards to the upcoming Season 5 and maybe Season 6.

Seasons 2 and 4 are really good and worth watching all the way through, while for the sake of catching up, Season 3 is only really worth it premiere and finale (and maybe Keep Calm and Flutter On).

Eh, I'll watch it if it's good.

MLP is always good for when you want to watch something happy and colourful and just chill on the couch for a bit.

The so-called drop in quality in season 3 is very much overstated, and there are plenty of episodes worth watching. The only ones I consider to be bad in that season are "Apple Family Reunion" (boring) and "Spike At Your Service" (character flanderization and boring).

Just watch every episode. It's a lot like watching Star Trek: The Next Generation, in that you should watch even the episodes that people consider to be weak, because there can be something that you like.

I've a feeling that the movie's going to be a live action/CGI mix, much like they did with the Chipmunk and Smurfs movie, and following that will place them in the "real world" as well. It would theoretically keep costs down while also allowing them to use recognizable actors for advertisement purposes.

Here's hoping I'm surprised.
